Hey all,
Can anyone recommend some good books for one-year-olds? My twin neices are turning one next month and I would like to get some books. They live in Australia, so it would be cool if the books could be NZ orientated (eg about kiwi, sheep, pukeko etc), but not 100% necessary. Does anyone have some well-loved favourite titles I could go for? I would love some recommendations, as I was pretty daunted when I went to the book shop! |

We were given "The Puffin Treasury of New Zealand Children's Stories" as a gift when DS was born, and they are great! They are 'proper' books (200+ pages long), so the parents have to read them out to the kids, but we've been doing that with DS since he was a couple of months old and he loves listening to the stories. They are a compilation of short stories, poems etc - including some classics that I remember reading as a kid, and heaps of newer ones. Many of the stories have great illustrations. |

| Not NZ themed but I think 'Dear Zoo' by Rod Campbell is great for that age. Also 'Where is the green sheep' by Mem Fox. Both good classics with good language and illustrations. |

OMG, my twin nieces turn one this month too! had to check initially to see if we were talking about the same kidlets,but mine live in gisborne.
Anyway, I suggest Hairy McClarey. For about $17, you can get the boks in board book form which is perfect for wee ones. the rhyme is great too. We got our girls slinky malinky and schnitzel von krum. as well as a bubble machine- so cool. |

yeah Hairy McClarey is great- Ella loves looking at all the pictures of the dogs (we got the one with 5or 6 stories in one hardback book). Also Dear Zoo is great. My mum also brought this book called Gallop for Ella. It was recommended in the carvas mag one time and is a scanimation picture book (when you open each page the image moves). Ella LOVES it. I was going to say HMc as well, but you could also get the Hungry Little Caterpillar in hardcover style for 1 year olds. They are really fantastic.
Basically 1yos like picture books with bright pictures that look like photos, not pastelly 2D boring looking pictures. They especially like things they recognise, so faces and animals are very cool. (Even if all the animals get called 'dog'  )-------------  |

Thanks for the ideas guys! I know the twins already have the Hairy McLairy series, and I think the hungry caterpillar too. That Gallop book looks cool!

Daniel doesn't appreciate HM yet.
He loves the usbourne touchy feely book range (yeah that sounds funny). They have some awesome books with different textures to touch. The pictures are really good. He even likes the fairies book from their range, so much so he saw it in the bookshop and wouldn't give it back so I bought it for him. |

Yup we have kisses for daddy its very good Hairy MacCleary is what I was going to recommend, and you can get them in sets or in hard cover versions as well

Know its a bit late but favourites here are Maisy mouse series, bright/colourful and simple to read. Hungry Catepillar, Corduroy the bear ....Dr Seus 'In a people' house and Dear Zoo is a HUGE fave, he sits there and turns the pages as i read it to him and opens the flaps on cue. He knows that book off by heart (just can't read it back to me yet lol).

I found a few books I quite liked - some with super bright colours and buttons that can be pushed to make sounds. That seems fun for a one year old. And I am going to order the Gallop book, cos that just sounds cool. You guys rock! |
