Im just wondering how many of you have found out your babies gender only for it to be born the opposite to what you were told?

I have found out that we are expecting a baby girl but my MW thinks I'm having a boy based on the heart rate....so it's just got me a little curious .

My MILs cousins daughter was expecting a girl (told from scan) and ended up with a 12lb boy!!

It can happen I guess - nothing is infallible

I always knew I was having a girl, 20 week scan confirmed it and so did her anatomy when she was born but my SIL tried to convince me I was having a boy.

SIL had 2 daughters by her husband and a third on the way.  2 scans confirmed that it was a girl so when her son (from a previous relationship) asked if he could name the baby if it was a boy she was quite happy to agree.  However several weeks later when "Michael Jordon" was born they had to negotiate and convinced son #1 that Jordon was a good name for their new baby boy.

A friend of mine was meant to have a girl, according to her 20 week scan, but ended up with a healthy boy. She actually wasn't all that surprised herself, as a psychic told her "a little boy is waiting for her" a couple of months before she got pregnant. Her midwife wouldn't let her dress him in pink clothes to go home from hospital though , so it may pay to pack a few white ones just in case?

i would be more inclined to believe a scan than a heartbeat... it can happen apparently tho...

My MW refuses to guess for me.....

The scan guy didnt wanna tell me what I was having with DD untill 28th weeks and then he said he was 99% certain that its a GIRL.

I am hoping to find out what I am having next Wed from Scan. I think the H/beat thing is an OWT??

I've heard of this happening to people I know, but not closely.  I was told at my 32 week scan with Jett he was a boy (so it was pretty clear that late in the pg), but my MW was convinced by the heartbeat it would be a girl.  So much so, that when Jett was born I did ask if he was boy!!

My midwife doesn't believe in the heart rate thing. I just asked her last night. It does seem to work for a lot of people though. I'd definitely believe a scan over it.

We didn't find out, but were convinced it was a girl. While I was in labour we had lots of time to discuss it - both MWs thought it was a boy, and by the start of the 2nd stage, we both thought it was a boy too. Turns out we were right. His heartbeat averaged about 140 (OWT says boy) but an old Eastern European woman told me it was definitely a girl after feeling my tummy and looking at my hands!

I don't know anyone personally who were told the wrong gender from a scan, but have heard it happens. My midwife also doesn't believe in the heart rate thing cause I remember asking her about it once.

My friend was just telling me the other day that her Mum thought she was going to be a boy and so everyone bought "boy" gifts and things before she was born. Her favourite toy growing up was a "boy's" toy. She's just over 30, so not sure whether it was from a scan or OWTs that her Mum was so sure?

We have found out that we're having a boy. Our obstetrician could tell at my 15wk scan and my 20wk scan this morning confirmed it. The "boy's bits" were very visible!

I've always heard that when you are told it's a boy (from a scan) it's pretty definite, but for girls there's always a chance they've just missed the important bits?

Yep it happens more with misreading the scan as a girl than as a boy. Boy bits, if visible, are very obvious, but sometimes they can be hidden or there can be a shadow and therefore they think its a girl. Basically if they don't see boy bits they say its a girl. Hence why most of the above are about girls turning out to be boys.

We could definitely see all the bits at the 20w scan and he came out the right gender.

I thought the heart rate thing was just an old wives tale?? Babies heart rates change so frequently (and thats a good thing apparently), I'd believe the scan over the heart rate.

ETA: found this on net

Heartbeats

One belief that has been around for some time, and even had some acceptance in the medical community at one point, is that the fetal heartbeat differs for boys and girls. If you're having a girl, then the fetal heart rate will be above 140. A boy will have a heart rate below 140. However, that pesky science has reared its little head again to say that this is complete fiction. A baby's heart rate is not affected by its sex until it is born, when a girl's heart rate will increase considerably compared with boys during labor.

Yes that happened to me!! At my 20 week scan we were told we were having a girl, and then at my 38 week scan was told it was a boy. I was in denial right up until my son was born.......we didn't even have a boys name planned! I'm just glad I didn't buy too many pink things, and that my SIL had a baby boy 6 months earlier so had some blue things handed down. So I'm thinking next time I'll still ask but will definitely be weary lolz

My midwife has been in the job for over 40 years. She told me we were having a boy based on the heart rate before I even had a scan. Apparently she's never been wrong either!!

My midwife made a passing comment recently that my baby was probably a girl based on the heartrate. This was some weeks after my 20 week scan that told us he was a boy!

I had to have another scan just a few days ago, and it is DEFINATELY a wee boy. :o)

I think it is possible for the sonographers to get it wrong, and it sounds like it happens with reasonable frequency (more so with girls than boys). But, from what I have googled, there have been quite a few studies done on the heart rate theory that are completely inconclusive. I think it is an old wives tale personally.... although it had me worried for a while when I looked at all the blue stuff I had gone out and bought!!!

Edited to add that at times our boys heartrate has been up at 180 beats per minute - supposedly girl heart rate territory, and has never been below 150bpm.

Well i have another scan next week to check babies growth and Liquor levels...so i'm going to ask again...

I thought it was an old wives tale as well, but it seems many people believe in it, or at least get confused by it.

just wanted to say.......don't believe the heartrate thing!!

charli's heartrate was exactly the same as jack's at every mw check, give or take a few beats   140-145
so you just never really know until they come out

Joshie was always over 150bpm. I was convinced he was going to be a girl, and took a few days to get over the shock when a scan revealed he was a boy!

When i went for my first week scan with C at 18 weeks the radiographer said it was "more likely to be a girl " , but i figured that could be either , and as long as i didnt give birth to a monkey , that would be ok

For most of my pregnancy i "felt " i was having a girl but started thinking of her as a boy , just in case

Then i went into hospital at 37 weeks and demanded (er i mean asked for ) another scan the girl bits were very distinctive, (the radiographer referred to it as a hamburger ) my girl isnt shy ...never has been !

HOWEVER when she was born , i thought i had a very ....well endowed son , til my best mate whispered to me , "its a girl kel..thats the umbilical cord "
