I have heard babys heartbeat with my midwife with a doppler machine, but when i went for my scan at 13 weeks there was no sound for teh heartbeat. i could see the heart beating and stuff, and it was all fine, but I was looking foward to hearing the heartbeat and now I am just wondering, do you usually hear teh heartbeat at the scan? Do you think the sound on my machine was just turned down? Cos my husband was at the scan and I was really keen for him to hear teh heartbeat but obviously he didnt and I am wondering if at the next scan I shoudl ask the lady to put on the sound? Or is it possible that there is no sound with some machines???

I think they can turn the sound up and down....we saw ours and then she flicked something so we could hear it.

I never heard the heartbeat during any of the scans I had for my 2... maybe it differs from place to place?

You must have to ask. Usually the scans are silent.

I asked at my last scan and they said their machines didn't have that facility (and they were meant to be the best in Auckland!!!) I didn't ask at my previous scans though. My midwife said I could pop in anytime to have a quick listen so maybe call in with hubby one day so he can hear it

Hi Frantic,
We had our 1st scan this morning. (as you know from NZWP..)

Anyway, the lady asked us if we knew what to expect, and DH said that he was hoping to hear the heartbeat. The lady said that scans are purely visual, and dont have a sound feature, so although we would see the heart flickering away, we couldnt hear it...

Although, by some of the comments above, some machines have the sound facility, but ours didnt.

Kelly, where was your scan in Aucks? I hate to say this because I'm really not usually such a potty mouth, but I reckon some places telling you they don't have sound is bollocks ! Not sure about other places though, but all the ones I've been to have had it (sound) - definitely had to ask though (and all my scans, 4 in total, were at different places).

Jax - I had my scan at Ascot Radiology    You would think they would have had that feature as they are bl00dy expensive!!

Kelly, they played us the sound there so I don't know what the problem was ! And Ascot is a bit expensive if you don't have a referral, but I normally find their services very good - have been through other departments for a few other things and was quite pleased. My dating scan that put us at just shy of 7wks was there, my next one was at 13wks in Canada, anatomy scan at 19.5wks was at Auckland X-ray, and the last one was at Mercy Radiology.

The woman who did our scan was really nice and afterwards she found out that the DVD didn't work so she took us back in and redid the whole thing!! She even did a 4D scan for free aswell so I'm surprised she didn't let us hear the heartbeat! The first two scans I had only cost me $25.00 each and for my anatomy scan, the place I'm going to is free with a free video!!

I heard the heartbeat during the second scan, but only for a moment when the person doing the scan turned the volume on.

I copied a great idea from someone recently and that was to record the baby's heartbeat on my cellphone at my last midwifes appointment when she got the doppler out. I love listening to it every now and again Great to play back to other people as well!
