Im still drinking coffee, i think you can have up to 3 glasses/cups of caffine drink a day or so I was told. Other than that just avoiding the normal, deli meats etc. I avoided everything with Kobe and everything went wrong so this time Im a bit relaxed. My midwife said the biggest things to avoid were chicken that had been sitting around like the indian and chinese you get at malls and also sushi unless they made it from scratch for you.

Coffee mmmm..... (dribbles) well being that i am such an addict . The first 3 months i couldn't stand it. Now i am having 2-3 cups a day which for me is really good as before i was pregnant i was have 4-6

Hi,
I am generally pretty careful with what I eat and avoid things like soft cheeses and ready made salads from supermarkets etc. The one thing that I really miss since being pregnant is sushi - I can't wait to be able to eat that again. I have never been a coffee fan so I can't answer that question.

Oh, and not a coffee drinker at all, but I have been avoiding diet coke which is my #1 caffeine addiction. But I craved Coke with maya and she turned out OK.

I must admit, I have had the yolks on my eggs turn up slightly soft and I didn't send them back!

I also caved to a KFC craving the other day, I bought it, got it home, nuked the living daylights out of it (nuked burger not so fun but......). I won't be making a habit of that but thought if I nuked it it wouldn't be so bad....*waits for someone to tell her off*

I can't wait for Salmon and Avocado sushi! I've been joking that when the baby comes and people want to visit...if they have no sushi with them then they don't get to see the baby!

I'm still having coffee, but mine are never very strong, about 50/50 milk to actual coffee ! And only one in a day, first thing in the morning. No raw seafood, although I have indulged in the occasional bit of ham, once was before I really "knew" and once I was just being naughty Still having eggs, sometimes runny - but always hot hot hot, and usually cooked by me or hubby. I have NEVER been a fan of KFC though, so wasn't an issue

I went 'off' coffee when the morning sickness hit, and now just have a cup every few days or week. No decaf for me, though!!
I've cut surface-ripened cheeses out of my diet (but crave processed cheese squares so chow down on them now... maybe I'm not as anal about it as I originally thought!), I don't order ANY deli food (but I once worked for a caterer who said no-one should order anything from a supermarket deli!) and don't miss it at all so that's no biggie, don't eat cold meats (but pregnancy has turned me right off all meats so I don't miss them either), and here's the toughie for me... SUSHI.
I miss my sushi. I love the idea of letting visitors see the baby if they bring a plate of it over! Thanks for that one!

I went off coffee for 4 months. Now I drink a half shot mocha at work and an instant a day on the weekends. I've been avoiding the shellfish, raw egg, sushi, deli and cold meats. I still eat NZ soft cheese occasionally if its freshly bought and pasteurised. Oh and if I've bought hot meat for lunch I give it a good blast in the microwave. I miss wine and ham!

I've gone right off the taste of coffee - even the smell of it makes me queasy....

But other than that, I'm just avoiding the deli meats, and only eating chicken which I cook myself.

I still like my coffee... especially moving into the cooler nights. On average I would probably have one cup a day. Sometimes I have two a day but then sometimes I have none.

The only food I have avoided completely this pregnancy is anything in the deli and seafood. Thats it really.

I'm avoiding the deli meats, and caffine. Its my choice is to go caffine-free while I'm pregnant, so I don't drink coffee or coke, or some other softdrinks that contain caffine. Nat supports me by not drinking too much coke in front of me! and by making sure there are alternatives available (like L&P) when we go out somewhere.

Wow I thought I was quite strict but now I dont think I am! I ahev eaten KFC (not often but eveyr now and again) and I have had one toasted ham sandwich which was hot. Also had one bagel with smoken salmon but that was before i knew i wasnt allowed it. I have not been drinking caffine which I am proud of, but other than that the only things I have avoided are pre-cooked chicken, deli-meats and sushi...
AND OOHHHHHH I MISS THE SUSHI TOO!!! SO SO SO MUCH!!!

I'm not overly strict... like I said, I avoid deli meat, but I still eat cooked chicken from the supermarket - but I know that it is cooked fresh each day. I still eat McDs and KFC, but usually go for a vegetarian version at McDs 'cause I've gone off red meat a bit!

I pretty much avoid all the naughty foods I do have Mc'D's but I make sure they are fresh and piping hot or I send it back. I also drink coffee about 2 a day and 1-2 tea's a day I stay well away from supermarket deli foods herd too many nasy stories working in a supermarket.
Anyway it is late off to bed for me.

Is vegetarian sushi okay? I like sushi too (esp chicken teriyaki flavour!) and hope that vegetarian sushi is fine.

I drink decaf coffee now, but occasionally have a real coffee or tea or coke. Will try to cut down more now that I'm pregnant and not just ttc.

I won't miss seafood as I'm not a big fan of it.

I think it is the rice too Chaucey that is the problem not just the meat inside it.

You are right Sarah Beth, just talking to my friend last night and she said that cooled rice is really bad! I had no idea. I guess that means no sushi, cold rice pudding, rice leftovers etc...

She also said to try and avoid soft-serve icecream.

Posted By: jax
Date Posted: 24 April 2006 at 9:12am
Soft serve? I'm sure that's come up before, I think because of the rumor that it's mostly recycled pig-fat or something. I reckon where that came from is that there is a bit of gelatin in it, which contains pork by-product of some sort, but NOT pig fat - I've had a couple of sundaes and soft serve cones *shrug*, it's not something I eat heaps of though.

According to the MOH Food Saftey stuff, the problem with soft serve is that it is a salmonella risk, something to do with raw egg? I don't know how taht works, but that's what it says.

All sushi stuff is bad because of the rice, rice is apparently one of the worst things for growing bacteria, starts straight away so its a big no no and cream freeze is because they cant clean the machines properly, just the type of machinery I guess by the time it sits there and then goes through the pump and nozzle thingee and they are hardly ever cleaned and its apparently impossible to get them clean enough. I asked heaps about that because I love cream freeze so was gutted when I couldnt have it. Of course with everything its how far you want to take it, I know people who have eaten sushi with no problems and Im sure there are others who have had cream freeze with no prob

i heard about the soft serve risk when i was working at macdonalds years ago. we were doing a promotion with free sundaes and a pregnant woman told me about it. apparently aside from the chicken fat that it is made with it is a hygiene thing like robyn said. i can certainly believe it, although the nozzles on the machine were sanitised every night, the machine itself was only properly cleaned once for an inspection during the 9 months i was there.

Even while TTC i tried to avoid lots of caffiene in Coffee and tea so am quite use to decaf coffee especially the vittoria brand. If anyone is concerned about the caffiene in tea, then one to try is Rooibos, it is a south african herb tea, takes a bit to get use to the flavour but now i am hooked and don't really fancy normal that much anymore.

I have a question about dodgy foods - a couple of times I have forgotten what I am and am not supposed to eat - one day I had smoked salmon (bad i know but i didnt know it was banned at the time!) and i had a slice of ham in a sandiwch without thinking - I was wondering this: would we know if something bad had gotten into our system through those foods - i mean are we supposed to be avoiding them cos of food poisoning (in which case it would be obvious) or because of any other bugs that may or may not be noticed by ourselves?

WOuld I know if I had eaten a bad bug thing?

I could be wrong on this but I dont think you will always know if something is dodgy, I think it can affect the baby and not you but would be picked up in scans and blood test etc... I wouldnt worry to much though, it has to be pretty bad to affect the baby and the odd thing is when I was in hospital after my waters had broken on the menu everyday was sandwhiches that had meat in them and this was in the maternity ward which I found odd.

Robyn's right. The main reason all those foods are "bad" are because they are more likely to harbour the bacteria that cause food poisoning, or can affect bubs in some other way.
