As some of you know, lil miss and I are in Starship, she has had bronchiolitis. She's doing really well, has been off the oxygen since yesterday and the doctor said this morning that if she can get her feeding sorted we can go home this afternoon.
But it is such a mission and I am getting so frustrated that I could cry She is unsettled and coming on and off the breast so not getting a decent feed, then gets tired and wheezy from the effort so goes to sleep but hasn't had enough to eat so wakes up an hour later hungry but still too tired and grouchy to feed. My poor nipples are destroyed from 4 days of expressing and every time she latches it hurts so her coming on and off every minute or so is agony. This morning since she woke up at 6am she's had 6 mins total of good sucking and feeding interspersed with lots and lots of coming off, relatching, coming off, relatching...
We never had any probs getting breastfeeding established to start with and I am so miserable at how things are going. I want to go home so much, I am soooo over this place, but they won't let us go till she's feeding properly and at this stage they're debating putting another feed down her NG tube just to get her to sleep a bit longer which feels like a giant step backwards as she hasn't had a tube feed since 2am
Sorry for the rant, I am just sooo frustrated! I was really looking forward to getting home and lil miss is just not playing the game with me

The doctor is going to come and review later this afternoon but the nurse said no going home at this stage
If she doesn't feed when she wakes up we're going to try a bottle of EBM as it's less effort than breastfeeding but seeing as she won't take a bottle I think it might be more stressful for her Plus, she *needs* to be breastfeeding long term.

Sorry to hear things have got so rough for you again Emma, I hope things improve soon for you. The sound of a feed thru her ng tube may seem like a step backwards but it might just give you a bit of a break and give her the sleep she needs so she is not so grumpy when she wakes, then maybe she will feed from you. Good luck, hope you are out of there soon

She just had a good feed! It took all her energy and she promptly went back to sleep, but she had a good strong 4-5 min feed
Fingers crossed!

I think she's turned the corner! She went to sleep on her last feed but woke up 20 mins later much happier and had a play then a top up (which wasn't brilliant but was OK) and now she's down again. The doctor came a little while ago and said he'd come back and check on us later so here's hoping we can go home!
Thanks for all your support. I was feeling quite miserable earlier.

Still here I just had a major melt down, I am exhausted (and so I might add is she!), we have been battling with the feeding all day and getting nowhere. The nurse came in and said "try a bottle" which I did and of course she wouldn't take it so her solution was "oh well, she's not dehydrated yet"
As for the doctor, he stuck his head in the door and said "we'll get there". Yeah, when?! I am getting no support at all from them!
Still, change of shift soon...

Now I really have seen it all...
If you've ever wondered how they can tell how much a breastfed baby is getting, I can tell you They aspirate the stomach contents via NG tube Gross, but she wasn't at all worried.
The night nurse was much more helpful, she watched me fight to feed her at 10.30pm and said we'd see how she went overnight. She slept from 11 til 6.30am (well 5.30am but stupid daylight savings!) but then instead of having a big feed she fussed and fiddled and laughed at us. Her fontanelle is getting a bit sunken tho so the nurse aspirated her stomach and she had taken a grand total of 40ml. Which might be on the low side of normal if she had fed three hours ago but being 6 1/2 hours since her last feed they decided she needed a top up in the tube . She only gave her 25ml tho so hopefully she'll still be hungry enough in 3 hours to have a decent feed. The nurse said she's optimistic we'll get home today, probably this afternoon rather than this morning but I'm OK with that - as long as we get home! Lil miss just needs to start playing ball!
Of course she is completely happy, she lay there laughing at the nurse and I quite happily even during the aspiration (that must be the weirdest thing - having your stomach emptied ) and generally being cute the little monkey.
At least I got a good nights sleep. I went to bed at 11.30pm and when the nurse came in at 6.30am and said lil miss was stirring and she wanted to weigh her I was like "can't it wait till morning?" and she was like "it IS morning!" It still felt like the middle of the night!
ETA: And at least my nipples got a decent break overnight so were less sore this morning. Much less frustrating for me!

thats weird.. you'd think they would just weigh them before and after the feed to see how much they had. i wouldnt have thought having an empty stomach would make a difference. i dont get hospitals and drs and the weird things they do!

They put it back in again after they'd measured it. They syringe it up in a big syringe then syringe it back in again
Had a much more useful doctor this morning, she said the tube can come out when she wakes up - if its not in then the nurses can't get lazy and use it, and she might feed better without it in, then she'll come at 4pm and re-evaluate. But I've basically said that we're going home then regardless, and the doc seemed OK with that.

We're home! And very glad to be here!
Lil miss hung on tooth and nail to stay there, I swear she didn't want to come home coz about 2pm I got her up to feed her and she was purple and mottled. The doc said we could stay an extra night so they could keep an eye on it but I said NO WAY! I can keep an eye on it home, her oxygen sats are good and she's happy and feeding well so no reason to stay.
Thanks for all your support! I was really down and miserable yesterday when things weren't going well. Still very sore when feeding but getting there. And I've now got her feeding off both sides so am not having to express the other side any more
