I just looked up the pay period thing as DH gets paid on Thursday. IRD say that as he worked in September it is taxed under the old rates. So 2 more weeks till we get our extra $$$$$
|

Date Posted: 30 September 2008 at 12:42pm
Dagster, the tax cut will take effect from the 1st regardless. And if your pay period covers some days from each, you'll get the september days at the old rate and the october days at the new rate. So when I get paid next week, only some of the days will be at the new rate, and I'll have to wait another fortnight before I get a full pay at the new rate. Does that make sense?

On the home page there is a section called individuals and families and then under that is the link to income tax and WFF then use the calculators once you are in the right section.
The income tax page has a link to the changes in tax thresholds which gives a rough indications (goes up in $5K chunks).

Lilfatty - I assume you get more from WFF depending on income (obviously) and # of kids as all of the thresholds have gone up per child etc.
We get (I think) $16 per week for DH and an extra $14 per week from WFF so $30 a week yay!
I'm pretty sure when they had it on the news a while back you get $15-16 a week if you earn between $40-80,000, then it goes up. I can't remember what the new thing is for 20-40k, and under 20k don't get anything I think (although we might which would be great!)
Oh and of course you get that money EACH, so if 2 of you are working you get twice the rebate (obviously only one lot of WFF though).

I dont get anything from WFF now as I earn above the threshold
But it looks like Im going to get $56 extra a fortnight once the tax rate changes.. so not too shabby (obviously it would be better if it was a week lol)
Emz I would double check your eligability ... as Im in the bracket you mentioned and it works out at an extra $28.00 per week.

Here's a simple rundown:
http://www.ird.govt.nz/news-updates/like-to-know-tax-rates-change-oct-2008.html#personal-income-tax-rates - IRD tax cuts
Lilfatty you must earn a lot more than us as I just looked and its only $28 if you earn over 70k. I got my initial one wrong (going off the original press release, not this one).
But... I get an extra $5 a week so that's good. Yay. I get taxed at 12.5% lol cos I earn peanuts!

So Im confused you know how it comes into pay today, does that mean that your pay that goes in say tonight or tomorrow night will be the new price - or will it be the old price?
Or does it come into play properly next week?

It relates to hours worked from today, so if you get paid tonight for the hours you worked last week it will be at the old rate. If you get paid next week for the hours that you've worked this week it will be a combination of the old rate (until yesterday) and the new rate (from today). Then going forward it will all be at the new rate.
If your pay covers your wages from dates both betore and after 1 October they will work out your pay split between the dates, ie Monday and Tuesday of this week will be calculated at the old rate and Wed - Fri at the new rate.
Make sense?

Well its a tad more confusing than that.
It is when the pay period ends.
So for example if you get paid tomorrow for the week ending today (eg .. Thursday 25th September to Wedneday 1st October) because the pay period ends in October .. you get taxed at the new rates.
For example the payroll I did today the period end was yesterday .. so they are going to get the old rates.
The payroll Im doing tommorrow the pay period ends today .. so they get the new rates.
Hopefully that sheds some light.
Oh and the entire period is taxed on old or new .. they dont tax a certain number of days at the old and a certain number at the new.
