I couldn't quite think of the right way to title this but...

On this forum do you like to be called my your real name or your forum handle??

The reason I ask is I have just joined another forum (not parenting or anything like that, and it is an overseas one), and they like it that you have your real name in your sig so you can be called that.

I have no problem with that as my forum handle has my name in it so I am sweet. But what about you??

It doesn't really bother me what I get called...my username has my real name in it anyway (when people work it out) so it's not like it's a secret. I usually call other people by their forum name rather than their real name though, unless they've made it clear it's ok to call them by their real name...

I have no issues with being called by my first name as long as I know the person a bit first IYKWIM?? (like i've been chatting on here for a while now and i 'know' quite a few of you in real life and by forum handle/online so I'd have no problem with with them calling me by my first name) but it's nice to have some secrets rather than everyone knowing your personal business

(Neeks is a shortened version of it)

I don't mind, TBH it's a bit weird when people call me Maya lol!

But I do usually refer to others by their user names unless I know they don't mind or they have their real name in their sig, otherwise I assume they prefer their username.

I try and keep my real name off the forum so stick to my forum handle.

I think because of that I'm in the habit of referring to everyone else by their forum handle too.

my forum name is close enough to my real name , Trish , so doesn't really bother me.

There are some people here who are known by their real names rather than their aliases, such as Emma and THE Kelly.
Sometimes I am unsure which to use, as even though I might see their real name being used a lot I feel like I haven't interacted with them enough to use their real name. IYKWIM

Im not fussed either way ... I tend to use forum names, more than real names even if I do know them as I know some people like to "hide"

Although I do have a habit of calling people their old forum names even when they pick a new one (its a habit thing).

I will say that when I enter a forum discussion and everyone is calling each other their IRL names Im a little "put off" as it makes it seem like a personal discussion, more than an open forum discussion, (and it makes the thread hard to follow).

If I remember their real name I use it but most of the time I can't remember it and use their username. I feel rude using their username when I should know their real name. My real name is in my username so I prefer my real name. IRL I'm normally only called Rach by really close people so it is a bit weird sometimes but I don't mind.

Posted By: Daizy
Date Posted: 03 October 2008 at 1:03pm

If people know my real name I have no problem with them using it. Even after a year it I still find it a little strange when someone calls me Daizy. Not that theres anything wrong with it, I just sometimes foret that what I called myself

For other people, I only use their real name if they make it really obvious, like at their forum handle or in their signature. Or if I feel like I know them pretty well.

If I know someone IRL I find it hard to use their forum name. But if I don't know people I'd always use their forum name.

I prefer people use my forum name unless they know me as I too also like the anonymity that it allows (sort of...).

In saying that I'd PMSL at someone calling me "Surfergirl" in the mall etc.

I like people calling me Dal - which is not my real name but my nickname - but in saying that i dont have it on my signature or anything its just nice when people pick it up I guess - it makes me feel special (lol) and that they have paid attention or whatever - am I making sense?!

Though do agree with lilfatty about calling people by their old forum names! I tend to just out of habit. I imagine that could be very confusing for anyone visiting the Jan/Feb08 mummies thread actually!

I prefer to call people by their forum names as I know some want a little anominity (sp?)  but some people are just better known by their IRL names so I call them that.  I guess untill people start refering to themselves by their real name or have it in their sig, its best to assume they want to use their forum... thats just me.  I try not to use too much of people's personal info though

ROFL *makes mental note not to call Lizzy that B*#%h in management*

I don't mind whether people call me Mojo, MrsMojo, MrsM or Jo but if you use my proper name (Johanna) I probably won't realise you're talking to me as only a few people use it.

I don't mind too much either way - i don't know anyone here IRL (well I don't think I *recognise* any of you??)
I tend to call people by their forum names unless it is really obvious that they are OK with their real name being used and what it is. It took me a wee while to figure out that Emma was Maya . I must be a bit slow (and new to this whole forum thing )
As Jo said - LizzyJ, I will try and not call you that B*#%h in management!! Sounds like a fun week!

Lol, people quite often think that my handle is just that, an anonymous handle... But it's my name. So I'm not bothered.
What I do find funny is that all the other Mummies in the Jan/Feb thread have started calling me Ren, hehe. It makes my heart smile, because it's a nickname that only my friends use (I hate it otherwise!) and I love the fact that they're comfortable enough to use it.
(I realise that it's more a convenience thing, haha. Serenity is a bit much. Ren's much easier.. But I'll tell myself it's because they're good friends Makes me feel better about myself, LOL!)

Having said all this though, can someone tell me how to change my username? I'm kinda getting a bit suspect that I may have some lurkers, as there have been things I've been asked about that I've only told the ladies in my thread So want to regain some anonymity.

Click on "my profile" in the pink menu bar near the shopping trolley and then click on edit profile and you can change your 'forum handle' in there.

I don't mind being called by my real name, like Neeks mentioned...its fine if I've met you IRL or have talked to you for a while online ...makes it a bit more personal which I'm cool with.

I have a bad habit of referring to most of you by your real names though (well, those of you that I know your real names) ...I guess I do that because I prefer to see my name rather than 'Mum2Lucas' or M2L lol...I'll try and remember not to use your forum handles if you say thats what you prefer in this thread

I don't mind either way.  I think the July/August 07 mummies know my name, but other threads maybe not (although you only need to check my profile to find out).

I find it hard though, when people's names are used instead of their handle name as I don't know who they're talking about or to.

Interesting that many of you find it rude to use people's first names if you barely know them...

I'm probably the opposite... and especially in topics where there is a sensitive issue being discussed, I prefer to use someone's real name when offering support as it is a bit more personal ya know?

I don't mind at all what I am called! My username was my real name previously so people couldn't really get around it. ha.

I don't mind either way really, and I know that I'm not exactly anonymous being on here with photos of my child in my ticker etc, but I deliberately don't use my real name because it is uncommon. I would rather not be instantly recognisable to a lurker based on my nickname, but in saying that, I'm not worried if people use my real name which they do on occassion.

Unless everyone else uses someone's real name, I tend to stick to nicknames just cause I'm unsure of a person's preference..

Me, I prefer to be called Wonder Woman. But that's a bit too much to type.

IRL I get Charly (like Charlie) - which is why I used to have that handle, so on here that's pretty much what I get called. It's easier to type than my current handle, and Wonder Woman

I only ever get called Charlotte when I'm in trouble or someone's really trying to get my attention.
Or when I'm introducing myself.
