Sorry if this is all over the place but here goes.  Alex has been having some wind issues (he likes to keep it and cause himself all sorts of discomfort) but he had turned a corner and after most feeds we were getting some good burps and he was sleeping without moaning and groaning all the time until we hit week 6 and I just can't seem to get him back to normal. He isn't sleeping enough is all over the place with feeding cos he falls asleep on the boob and because of this seems to be so unhappy. How can I get him back to some sense of normality? I am holding out feeding him as long as I can but am back to him keeping his wind in and then not sleeping properly cos he moans and groans and wakes up upset when it really wants to come out 
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks heaps (I hope what I have said makes sense) |

Don't they have a growth spurt at 6 weeks? It could just be that, then they want to feed lots and lots for 2-3 days whilst they up your milk supply and then things should settle down again. -------------

Eimear was like this and once I got rid of wheat from my diet it helped lots. Anytime I indulged in wheat it would take 3 days for Eimear to pass out the poo. Before each feed we would rub Eimears back to help get out any 'leftover wind' to make room for more.
I also eliminated dairy at the same time which was causing reflux issues with both girls too, I'm not sure if it affected her wind. I also took the girls to an Osteopath as well which helped lots. Are you using infacol / gripewater? We used infacol for 6 months with the girls. I remember things were so out of whack here that I tried to put Eimear into a 4 hourly routine and keep Aoife in a 3 hourly routine as Eimear was so tired all the time. She even slept through an entire bath, from undressing to dressing. And then we woke her to feed her. 
ETA: It was at 6/8 weeks that it turned to custard for us too. |

Ah, didn't look at your ticker so thought he was only 6 weeks.
Have you thought about taking him to chiropractor they can help with wind/colic. Spencer went to a chiro from 2 weeks old, he was breech and c/s birth so was for that, but the guy always asked if we had wind issues and we never did. Another lady at my antenatal class went purely for wind issues and she absolutely swore by it. -------------

You could try the welda colic powder, it is meant to be really really good. I have some, Ive only had to use it once though, as caden has been dealing with his wind quite well. ------------- |

We took Jimmy to a cranial massage therapist for his reflux/wind issues when he was a couple of months old - wish I'd taken him sooner. The treatment didn't completely resolve his reflux (that disappeared once he started on solids) but it definitely got rid of his wind issues. The therapist said it felt like he had a huge balloon inside him, which she managed to 'release' - don't know how exactly but I heard lots of gurgles etc lol. After that he would burp really easily IYKWIM...no more groaning, moaning and pulling legs up ... no more pain. Different burping techniques can help too. Try starting by sitting upright first and rubbing his back gently, then lift him right up so his legs can stretch out, then lay over your shoulder and pat gently but firmly - leaving the palm of your hand on one side of his back and patting with your fingers held together, from about halfway up his back up to his shoulders and repeat. Sorry, don't know if that makes sense! I had the same sort of problems - I was feeding A for too long and she was falling asleep without burping and then not sleeping well.
What helped was to get her into a sleep, feed, play routine - so feed him when he first wakes up and take him straight off the boob and stimulate him if he starts to fall asleep. Getting up and changing his nappy half way thru a feed can help to keep him awake. If he starts to get into a suckling sort of suck rather than a proper feeding suck take him off. I found it really hard to keep A awake during feeding, so I needed to be really vigilant - it made all the difference. Burping after a couple of minutes feeding can help - my mw said it is the first lot of milk in the belly that traps the air - so it makes sense to release the air early on. Gripe water also helped us, and a spoon full of cool boiled water can help with wind too. Good luck ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I agree with DJ :) This was the time when it all turned for us too, I ended up going to the Family Centre and they put us on a 3 hr routine, Hayley up for 1 hour, then back to bed. And we used weleda colic powder at every feed, except for middle of the night. Hayley is now in a good routine and her wind was manageable from that point on.

| Thanks guys. I started feeding him as soon as he woke yesterday and so am hoping to get him into this habit and also am just letting him sleep where he wants to sleep for now to let him get what he needs so he's not such a grumpy bum |

At the Mothercraft Unit they have all the babies from 6 weeks on in a 4 hourly routine..Makes a huge difference as they feed well and are awake and hungry..then they get a good time to digest it and do the farts etc hopefully with minimal problems in their sleep..
Brennan is a much more settled baby...pooing and farting and sleeping much better. Not to mention I dont feel so "Stuck" to a baby! -------------
