How many of you close your babies/toddlers door when they are sleeping? We have always closed Kobes door at the start mainly because I didnt want our dog getting in there but also because now we have to walk past his room to get anywhere in the house and also what if he gets up in the middle of the night while we are asleep, who knows what he could get into even though our house is pretty child safe. He has never seemed to mind it but my friend was shocked and said she didnt close her daughters door because she didnt want her to feel closed in, plus she has a light/aquarium thing on which her girl wont sleep without but I worry about getting into habits like that incase you go away and cant take it or it breaks. Kobe doesnt have a night light, never has and has generally always been a good sleeper. We have Charlotte's door closed too and no night light. I think if they are fine without a light then you shouldn't introduce it- its like giving them a dummy if they sleep fine without it, whats the point?
We shut her door because we have lights on and make noise and we don't want to disturb her. I don't think you're being mean at all. You should do what works for him- just because he isn't reliant on all these other habits to go to sleep doesn't make you mean! We have brianna's door shut she doesn't care that its dark and i have to coz she gets out of bed so she knows that when the doors shut she has to go to sleep so its pretty good.

I have always closed Hannahs door, no night light either. I keep it closed and put the heater on overnight so her room stays nice and warm, and also cos she wakes up when it starts to get light if its not shut. I try not to do anything to get Hannah to sleep, cos I worry like you that she would get hooked on it and NEED it for all sleeps, wherever we are. AS I said in the other thread, I close Hannah's door too. Mainly because of the noise we make out in the lounge. She's always slept with it closed.
I do have the baby monitor on so that I can hear her in the night. I used to worry about not hearing her properly... now I even sleep through her screaming on the monitor!!!

| i leave my girls door open, no real reason, its just a choice! and it works fine. we also have a night light in the hallway which lets a nice amount of light into their room as just like their mummy they both seem to not like the dark... well the nights that we havent had a night light they have woken up more and been much more unsettled, its what works best for you and your child. and i wouldnt stress too much unless kobe started to ask or show signs for the door to be open or wanting a light on.... |

During the day Ella's door stays open. When she is put in bed at night the door is closed and I leave the oil heater on for a while. I open her door after an hour or so, then turn the heater off when we go to bed. I leave her door open about 30cm otherwise the street light shines through the front door and directly onto her face. If she wakes during the night she comes straight to our bedroom, and first thing in the morning too, for a cuddle in our bed. She's never had a nightlight. ------------- Aimee Ella - 5.5 years old! we had xanthes door shut from day one, but over xmas she started wanting it left open, to the point she freaks out now about door open ( we think she picked that up from her older cousin ) X also has a night light, and if we would let her would have her reading light, the hall light and her main bedroom light on. also would prefer curtains open too.... i think it is just a stage she is going through with this though.
nothing mean about shutting doors! its awful having to keep away from a part of the house while you are trying to get the kids to sleep. ------------- Lyla - mum to Xanthe -  my big 4 year old

We mostly close our kids doors when they are in bed (day or night)... the toilet light is left on so Kiya can see to get there in the night, but we don't have a specific night light. ------------- Becca, mum of 2 girls & 3 boys |

I have the door closed when Alex sleeps, day or night and its not a problem. I somehow manage to wake up to Alex if he stirs so not a problem. He does have a night light, just a lava lamp so its quite dim. I started using it when he was only a couple of weeks old so I could breastfeed him in his room and be able to see & now its just habit to flick it on. He does sleep without it but it seems he doesn't sleep quite as well. I'm not worried, he will grow out of it eventually and he doesn't have any other "comfort" things like a dummy or blanket or special toy, just the night light  ------------- Mum to Alex (11), Blaire (10) & Erika (8) and Damien (6) Successful HWB VBA2Cs! aimee i take it you leave a window open while the heater is on? and that would only be in winter tho i take it? if i shut my boy in with a heater ten mins and it would be as hot as a furnace.

We just put the oil heater on really low so it clicks on when it gets cold in the middle of the night. The odd time I've forgotten to do it she wakes up cold in the night. We shut Arna's door and last night we went to a BBQ next door (Arna got LOTS of food behind my back!) and anyway at 11:30pm my sis brought her into my room (shes up for the weekend) and it stunk of spew... Jax said she had been crying for about 10 mins and covered in spew... I felt sooo bad.. But I think when other ppl are in my house I tend to do the deep sleep thing as I dont when its just me, david and arna!
Anyway back to the topic... Unless I know the kitten is outside and all windows shut then Arna sleeps with the door shut but a night light... we use to leave her door open with the hall light on so shes been use to it... ------------- http://www.snugglepie.com">

Oh yeah we also shut the door to keep the heat in- we have a thermostat oil column one that clicks on whenever the temp drops, just so she doesn't get cold. ------------- Jen, Charlotte 7 & Kate 3
