or Rolly Polly bugs...what ever they are called...you know the hard shell ones that go on their back roll up and die!!

Well when we came back from Fiji we saw a few dead ones next to our sliding door.....I cleaned them up yay...next day another few so I cleaned them up ...and every damn day they are there. DEAD!!

I never had these inside the house before.....outside the slising doors we have semi tiled BBQ area and then barked area with two huge trees...DH has got rid of the trees since as I always hated them and pulled the Yucky weedmat out and he said he saw many then...but how on earth are they coming in side the house? I saw one on my kitchen floor (we have open plan house and sliding door is not to far from Kitchen...

This is really grossing me out....what can I do? how can I stop them from coming in? I mean all they do is roll over and die!!?? My house is dry as I have a dehumidifier going and any ways its a dry house!!

PLEASE HELP!!

Is it possible you brought the bugs back with you from Fiji? You never know what might have crawled into your bag while you were there. Happened to some friends recently - she found them in her laundry, where she'd left a pile of washing on the floor for a few days after arriving home from holiday.

ETA - do you mean woodlice/slaters?

YAP Its like the pics you attached Kakapo...mind you I didnt really look at them closely. However if you touch them they roll up in a ball...

This morning I found them next to the sliding door and the front door...and some are walking around next to both doors and I cleaned up before I left home...I wont be surprised to find more when I come back!

I dont think I brought them back from Fiji as I found them next to sliding door after I walked in from
Holiday.... .

Deb - Yah I think it could be that...but how the hell are the getting in??

Mel and Deb - Yah Fiji was great! Zaara loved it!! more so than any one else I think...LOL

As for 30 weeks..... ....I know, I cant believe I have 9 weeks to go.....It just flew by, since I have been sooo busy with every thing!!

Hi again Roksana

I found some more info on slaters/woodlice and how to control them. The good news is "Although they sometimes enter in large numbers, they do not bite, sting, or transmit diseases, nor do they infest food, clothing or wood. They are simply a nuisance by their presence."

http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef439.asp - Control of woodlice  sounds a little difficult .

All the best for your birth - not long to go now!

Thanks for the Info Kakapo...this morning I had to clean up and I hate that they are walking around the house....I hate the fact that this is just before my baby arrives! I honestly need to do some thing...its just gross! I hate all insects and this is driving me NUTS!!!

I will tell DH that he needs to clean up that garden thingie outside as I believe thats themain problem! I was planning to put sand and then stones in that area so hopefully that will cut the problem down a little...but how do you avoid these guys since in NZ its raining all the damn time!

Its horrid as they do turn upside down and die!!

Oh and thanks...I know only 9 weeks to go....its a bit freaky!!

No worries Roksana, hope you manage to train them to stay outdoors soon.

Eeew, last night DH turned on the light and 4.40am and leapt out of bed. Still half asleep I was still lying there saying, huh, what's happening? He says "something just crawled over me" so I leap out too. He hunts around under his pillows and a rather large spider crawls out  and starts running across the bed. It had gone up his arm and then down his back, poor fella (DH, not the spider). What freaks me out, is about 10 days ago I had really vivid dreams about a big spider walking over me when I was in bed - no doubt there really was one doing just that . *shudders*

Eew slaters! I have something worse though - I grew up in Titirangi (very bushy part of Auckland), and we used to get Avondale spiders coming into the house (aka Huntsman spiders in Aussie, the ones they used in the Arachnaphobia movie). They were about 10cm from leg to leg and hairy, and once we saw one carrying a huge egg sac with it! They are completely harmless, but I'm really glad we don't live as close to the bush anymore. We also found a few enormous wetas outside from time to time....

Good luck though!

Gross blondy, I won't tolerate big spiders inside my house.  DH had a "pet" tunnel web for awhilen until I found out they like to hang out in bathrooms during the winter months, I made him get rid of it - the little bugger was hard to kill too (I'll find the photos if you're interested).

I've never understood the desire to have insects (or arachnoids! ) for pets! My sister had pet mice as a child, and that was bad enough!

and I'm glad it was always up to Mum or Dad (usually Mum!) to get rid of the avondale spiders....

It wasn't actually a pet, I just called it his pet.  It just happened to live in the rockwall near our back door and once discovered DH wouldn't get rid of it because it fascinated him - until I mentioned that it might join him in the shower one morning, then he was pretty happy to kill it.
