What I can and can't put down one?

After having a Plumber come unblock our sink today it appears that the 'anything but bones' rule that we were told before isn't actually true.

What Goes Down Garbage Disposals

Small amounts of leftover food from your plate
Small potato pieces and peelings
Carrot peelings
Coffee grounds and tea bags (some say these are not OK)

What Does Not Go Down Garbage Disposals

Anything that is not biodegradable food
Anything combustible
Plastic and metal
Cigarettes and butts
Bones from any animal
Hamburger
Bacon grease or other grease
Egg shells
Potato skins or large amounts of potato
Corn cobs or husks, lettuce, asparagus and other fibrous fruits and vegetables
Pasta and rice

I pretty much only put vege peels and salad left overs down ours.

I never put tea bags, banana skins, egg shells or anything like that down it.

I basically use the theory that it if would decompose in a garden fairly quickly then it can go down the disposal unit, not sure why I use this theory, just seems the best rule to go by!

We are also on septic tank and septic tanks are not friends with disposal units, so I always keep that in the back of my mind too as it kills of the good bacteria that live in the tank!

Yep we put potato peel down ours too.

The only stuff we don't do is egg shells, banana skins, corn outers, tea bags and meat bones.

Also watch out for the rogue teaspoon and/or beer bottle tops, waste disposals don't like those either

I put practically anything down mine, including egg shells, potatos, banana skins and chicken bones! And my DH is a plumber by trade - he reckons if it doesn't handle all that stuff, it's time for a new one.

I've got a really old unit and the only things I don't put down are:

banana skins
onion skins
pumpkin skin
corn husks
chicken bones

In saying that it does get blocked from time to time but hubby squirts water up the pipes from outside (I think - never really watched in detail). I love your DH's theory Lulu!
