Hi Rosie, welcome to Oh Baby! I dont have twins, but there is one mum on here who does and one preggy with twins. I am Aimee, I have an almost 6 month old - Hannah. My sis had twins last year when her daughter was 10 months. Wow, you must have your hands full! This is a great site - you'll love it

Oh, cool. What are your twins doing now? Does Blair love them or love them to death? :) He's at kindy?
Cam's still most of a year from kindy but we go out 5 times a week to playgroups, playcenter, music, coffee groups, multi birth club etc (depending on the week). Today we had the whole day at home - the day seemed to take forever!
Cam's more love them to death at this stage - loves to carry them everywhere and give them cuddles - even if they don't want to. Sometimes it's very hard not to giggle.
Anyway, I'm chatting away and I should be doing something else!

Hi Rosie
Ryan and Katelyn are busy little babies they are both crawling around and pulling themselves up on furniture, Katelyn has 2 teeth but Ryan doesn't have any yet.
Yep Blairs in Kindy 3 days a week and he loves it which is great for me. I have never been to a multi-birth group i just never seem to have the time and with living in the country it makes it abit hard to get to town.
Blairs pretty good with them he's the same as Cam he loves carrying them everywhere and likes them to play in his bedroom with him, sometimes he can be abit rough but most of the time he's good.
Whats your girls names? What are they up to? I think the older they get the easier they are to look after, they seem to be able to just play by themselfs which makes life easier.

I don't have twins - yet! But we have twins due mid October, and Maya who was 3 in february. The sonographer said it looks like the babies are identical, but I guess time will tell on that one.
Looking forward to reading your ideas and tips for how in heck I am going to cope!

Oh Emma i SOOOO know how you are feeling i thought the same thing when i was pregnant with Ryan and Katelyn. I had no idea how i was going to cope with twins and a 3 yr old, but in saying that you just do you have no choice ( as my mum would say ). You'll be fine the only advice i have is except any help offered to you, if it wasn't for my mum, sister and wonderful husband i hate to think how things might have been, and get as much sleep as possible, i learnt that the hard way with our car crash.
Its a fun and interesting experience you'll love it.

Megan is trying to climb over the fireguard - already! And Charlotte is looking at us.
The girls are walking along furniture and having moments of standing alone. And following me around the house. If I'm trying to find something, each time I pass them (and don't pick them up), they'll cry a bit louder. So frustrating - esp if I still can't find whatever I'm looking for and both babies are crying and following me around. I feed them finger food for solids - so I don't have to spoon feed them (ever!) - cheeky huh?
You live in the country? I couln't handle that - we're 1km walk to the centre of town - a great distance for a walk.
Emma - people often said when I was pregnant "I'd love to help, but don't know how" - the answer is: they can: bring you baking, dinner, bread or milk, babysit your eldest (esp in last weeks of preg - if you get that far ), do your lawns, garden - all very hands off stuff but it's so depressing being exhausted looking after the kids and looking out the window seeing the outside in a mess, and thinking what/how am I going to cook dinner tonight?
Did you go through a stage of not wanting twins? I did in those early weeks - then was excited.
Got to go and give my DH some attention.

I have talked to so many people who have said they have always wanted to have twins and i think man why would anybody want to have twins its so much hard work.
When i found out we were having twins i was not happy at all mu hubby and mum and sister (they were at the scan with me when i found out) were over the moon but it took me a while to get my head around the idea of being a mum to twins but it happened and they are the best.

As someone who has in the past expressed a desire for twins, I think it is because they really captivate people and are fascinating, especially identical twins. If most of us who have ever said "I'd love twins" are honest though we probably have quite a "romantic" idea of them and convienently forget the reality and all the work involved!
That said yes I'm still a little envious of you twin parents! My hat is off to you all!

I wanted twins first time round but had only one, then got pregnant with twins when Kobe was only 8 months old and to be honest wasnt very happy about it but then lost them and felt sooooo guilty for not wanting them. Ive only every wanted 2 kids which is why I would have been happy if kobe had of been a twin, which they actually think he was but the other one didnt develope. Hubby is a little disappointed this one isnt a twin but Im quite happy.

It's not so much that I don't WANT twins, I just go thru stages of what I guess is grieving for what it means I miss out on - the cruisy second pregnancy, normal birth, getting to have my awesome midwife as LMC, losing my little VW and moving to a bigger house, and the fact that we budgeted and planned so that we could buy our next baby teh things we couldn't afford when we had Maya, but now we can't afford it twice over.
But then I am actually quite excited about twins, and really dreading that they might tell me something is wrong with one of them at my NT scan on Monday. And Maya is excited about her "two babies".
Rosie - I've been staying with Mum and Dad over Easter and Mum has a slow cooker which she uses all the time, so I went out and bought one today coz I reckon it'll be the only way I get dinner on the table once the babies arrive! And not having any family in Auckland, I am really working on my friends for support! But Willie has a sister at Helensville who has offered to have Maya while I am in hospital which is god, and Mum is going to come over when the babies are home as well. PLus I'm making Willie take his 3 weeks annual leave then too so he can pace the floors with me.
Did either of you breastfeed? Maya had severe dairy and soy allergy so I have been advised not to put my next child on formula at all. Which was fine when we thought there was one, but the thought of breastfeeding two exhausts me!

Hey XandersMum - C&M were born 2 June - I noticed when black friday came & went & held my breath - esp b/c they were twins and EVERYONE thought they were going to come early (right on time, dragged out by c/s)! Yes, very mischevious! And cheeky grins when I say No -
Emma - I hated that - moving house, bigger car - huge changes for the family - and being pregnant and exhausted the whole time! The scans are always horrible because you think too much and they forewarn you all the things that can go wrong with twins (tiny babies, early, blah blah blah). The best thing you can do is to chill - don't over/under eat/exercise/work. Rest at every possibility.
I b/f for 10 days (11 months with big fat Cam) - I wonder how much was to do with the c/s birth, and worrying over another little one (19 months) - I was too exhausted to find enough food to feed enough to the babies.
People give you lots of stuff when you have twins (are you a multi birth club member yet? Ours has discounts at shops and clothing swaps - wonderful!) I wouldn't worry heaps about that side of things - let your mummy friends know what you're worried about & I'm sure it'll turn up cheap in the next 6 months :) That's what friends are for.

Rosie - I've spoken to the lady at the local Multiple Birth club and she was awesome, they mailed me the rego form so I'll get it sent off next week. Am thinking about taking Maya along to their coffee group pre-babies so that she can get used to the people, and see other sets of twins and stuff. Plus they give you a discount card for stuff which will be useful. I nearly fell over when I saw the cost of the double prams! But am also thinking that I will be able to get a Honda Odyssey 7 seater (my Mum had one years ago and they are really practical) for around the same as I can get for my VW, so that is good.
And yep, I am being veeeeery nice to my friends atm - I know I m going to need them!

We just have a station wagon - 94 Nissan Aviner. It fits 3 carseats across the back seat with heaps of boot space. (some people movers don't have much of a boot). We just looked for a wagon with a flat back seat (vs dips for your bums) and hoped they all fit! (I really really didn't want a people mover).
Don't buy an older version Phil n Teds - the new ones (E3s) are great. Can buy from Trade Me or new from Winkalotts.co.nz (saves $90?)
BTW IRD pays out 2x$1200 for twins born for your parental tax credit - dunno how much this compares if you're working and get paid parental leave. Also your family assistance will go up heaps with 3 vs 1 child
http://www.ird.govt.nz/yoursituation-ind/parents/
I go to the twin club playgroup - they're an interesting bunch and I've met some good friends there.
Anyway should go

That's good to know about the IRD - I thought you only got the one $1200. Will definitely come in handy. I don't qualify for paid parental leave tho as I am self-employed Willie would qualify, but the payments are only 1/3 of his usual wage and we can't afford to have such a big drop in income for a few weeks so have decided that annual leave is the best way for him to get time off. Plus he can take sick leave if needed on the day the babies are actually born.
Are you talking about the Phil and Teds E3 twin? The side by side one? I looked at them on Winkalotts but want to find somewhere where I can actually play with one and see how it folds and stuff. I looked at a Valco one at the Baby Factory but at $899 it's blimmin expensive! We will definitely buy the pram new tho - I walk/run a lot and am hoping that once the gremlins are here I can walk/run with them in the buggy so it will get a thrashing.
I thought about a station wagon - a friend has a Toyota that fits 3 carseats across the back, but with Maya being that much older if we get a people mover she can still have friends and stuff and they will fit in the car. Scary thought tho - I feel like my mother! My VW is such a girly little car, and now I am looking at Tanks!
BTW - thanks so much for all your input! It helps to get advice from someone who knows what they're talking about!

Just lost my long post - the website logged me out! grrrr.
grrrrr
grrrrr
Anyway - in short:
No, the front to back one - but you should only use it after the twins are 6 months, as they can't both lie back at the same time - though Maya can use the toddler seat till then and other baby in front/back pack. It's super manuverable, folds down small, swivel or fixed wheel.
I hate side by side strollers - DO NOT buy a pedigree sport side by side - I have one with a toddler seat on the front and it's a dog.

I vaguely remember Maria. Can't say I was paying much attention lol! But gas is a big thing atm - with the cost of petrol the way it is!
Rosie - Do you find the babies can sleep ok in the toddler seat part of the Phil and Teds? I was thinking of getting that one and just using the twin Snap and Go wheels for the capsules for the first 6 mths, but then I thought even at 6mths the babies will still be needing to sleep in the pram, and I dn't know how they will go in the toddler seat part? But it does lie back a bit doesn't it? I'm not too worried about Maya - she'll be nearly 4, and at 16kg now she will be too heavy for a toddler seat.

The stroller holds 25? kgs anyway - Cam is 16 also and fits fine in it. One seat reclines all the way, and the other stays upright (on a lean). https://secure.intellihost.co.nz/philandteds.com/framesetstroller.htm
Yep, most kids learn to sleep sitting up - esp in a moving thing.

I so need to get on her more often i've missed so much, been moving my sister into her house.
I breastfed Ryan and Katelyn for a month then they had breast and bottle till 6 months now they just have bottle. I wished i could have done it for longer and i could have but it was so time consuming and with Blair running around it just stressed me out to much.
We have a holden station wagon (hubby loves holdens) and the 3 seats fit along the back seat but there's hardly any room to move, hubby doesn't like the van type cars so that was our best option.
The parental tax credit is great and even now with having 3 kids our family assistance is good to, now thats its all gone up.

Hey Rosie
I have 2 1/2 year old twin frat boys - Keegan and Jaidyn. They are great fun....now lol. We have had some 2 year old issues since their 2nd bday but seem to be working it out now. The good old 2 year old independance thing. Just about does my head in some days!! They are def very busy boys. They are into everything and have to know how everything works lol. They are great mates mostly but at times can be the worst of enemies. Which makes sense as they are together so much.
I have started a date day where one goes to daycare and the other stays with me for a date then swop kiddlets the next day. Its great for me to have one on one time with them ( and so relaxing to go for a nice walk around the shops with just one instead of 2 tearing off in def directions!!) as well as great for them to have separate time at daycare and learn independance (sp?) of each other.
Anyway will go now have babbled enough but great to see so many twin mums on here as there were hardly any on here when I first joined - YAY

2 yr olds are great fun, huh? My eldest is 2 1/2 and I much prefer that age (esp to 6 month old and before- you know!) Charlotte and Megan are starting to be fun, and to be less hands on (walk, girlies - you can do it, eventually!)
Do you think you'll put them in diff classrooms when they get to school?

Emma, just a note on the honda odessy u r looking at getting,a lady down the road form me just bought one recently and i saw her struggling a lot with trying to get a single 3 wheeler in the boot.
have seen them up close and the space between the back seats and the boot lid thngy is VERY limited.
we are looking at getting a toyota praevia/estima as a mate has one and man, they are so spacious and the boot part easily fitted 2 single mountain buggys (So perfect for a twin buggy ).the front seat in the back of car easily fits 2 capsules/6mnth+ carseats and the back back seat fits 2 big booster seats.the back back seats fold in half and u can also flip them on their side for even more boot space(can u picture wot i am tryng to describe??) just somethng to consider also.
they are quite reasonably priced too.not sure on how economical they r either.
Hope I have been of sum assistance lol.the one we r wanting is still priced around 23 grand but we wont be looking for at least another 2 years when our current car is paid off,so hopefully by then they would have dropped a few grand.

Rebecca in regards to that car being economical, i don't think very many cars can be economical with the petrol price the way it is lol. If it gets any higher it will start costing us $100 to fill our car up and we so can't afford to do that.

My parents have a Toyota Emina which we are in the process of buying off them... it's an older one (1996) but still really good. Dad told us what they can do on a tank, and its pretty comparable to what we can do in our Corolla... costs about $65 at the moment to fill the tank...

lol Emma u might just have to suck it up cos theres not much else round that has a decent bootspace in a car car type.most are vanish types.the newer model praevias are very sporty looking as oppose to the 95-96 models but depends if u got the money to spend.best thing to do is find sumone willing to lend a double buggy to you and go to dealers yards and try fitting the buggy into different cars.

YAYAYAYAY rosie! another E3 fan. te he he
i found that ayja has learnt to sleep sitting up in the small back part in the toddler position (two seats) as she is now far too big for the baby lie back position underneath the toddler seat part - but then paris was heavier so the toddler seat squished down onto Ayja's feet when paris was in it - and i think the E3 version (we have the E2) has been changed to allow for more leg room for baby. but since you will have two bubbas the same age - you will probably be able to alternate it so that the sleepy one can be in the reclined part and the awake one can be in the front. (dunno what you'll do if both want to sleep though.. but how likely is that?? lolol) using the snap n go thingies for a while might be a good idea cos definately once they are older you will be albe to alternate a bit more and it should become easier.
Anyway with the add on seat it did take a while for Ayja to sit comfortably in it, as it has no lay back and is quite upright, and my plunket nurse recommended that she only sit in it while awake until she had good head control whilst asleep, because they can actually block their airways as they sink down into the chair when asleep and have their chin and neck all squished..
they really are as rosie said though, super manouverable and just feel like you are pushing nothing at all. going from our old pram to that one was such a huge change hance why i ramble about it all the time.
and yep baby city tends to have the phil and teds brands of things so try there.

Hey Rosie
Well I'm pretty sure for their first year at school I will have them together then separate them in their 2nd year once they get used to it. Also plan to start the boys at sch a little later due to the whole boys arent ready for sch at 5 etc. Been reading up heaps on the way boys learn compared to girls but thats a whole different story lol
Hey Emma dont know if this helps as I dont have a third older child to worry about but what i did with the boys was get a mountain buggy style buggy for my "walks" )PMSL at how often i go)and when they were bubs I borrowed my friends single buggy and front packed one bub for town trips as couldnt fit my big buggy in my car.
Once the front pack bub(Keegan as he was lighter) started hanging down round my knees I decided it was time to invest in a town pram.
As I only have a little hatchback I got a fold down pram (umbrella style) and it's brilliant - fits in any car. Still using it alittle but I have used it to bits.
Its a McClaren (sp?) side by side and fits thru most doors - in fact there have only been a couple doors i havent had fitted thru. The seats recline right back to laying position and it has a hood for each seat as well as storage thingys underneath.
It was around $350 at Baby City but they do discount with the multiple birth club.
Now it might be onverkill to have too prams/buggies but I got both for less than the price of a new double mountain buggy.
Anyway that was my 10cents worth of advice lol

haha! I have 3 buggies!
The single one we got when Cam was born. We still use on weekends when we have 2 adults around
The Phil & Teds E3V2 for weekends or downtown with Cam walking (not far)
The Pedigree Sport double wide with toddler seat (otherwise known as The Dog or That Thing I Hate) for big long walks to playgroup/ for exercise.
The school they will be going to has 2 new entrant classrooms next to each other, and esp b/c they're identical, I love the idea of splitting them up, but not sure if I'll do that in their first or second year of school. Depends how they are then?!
All those cars are so expensive! Ours cost $4500.

I'm hoping to get between $8000-9000 for my VW so that will give us a good starting point for a new car. I really don't want to get into a finance contract at this point tho with all the other expenses we will be having, so will have to look at our savings and stuff.
I had a quick look at the Phil and Teds a few weeks ago, will have to have a closer look later on.
Marlene - I have two prams atm too - a $30 Babywise umbrella stroller that I use for shopping and stuff, and the big Pioneer2 buggy that I use (used to use!) when I went walking/running with Maya. I'm selling the Pioneer2 atm, am going to hang onto the stroller until the babies arrive and then look at getting a double umbrella stroller for when they're a bit older. I'm not too worried about Maya coz she'll be nearly 4 by then, but I'm thinking maybe a kiddie board for her. Haven't decided yet, will see how she goes closer to the time.
