Just had a thought occur to me today. Usually when I stay in the maternity ward after giving birth, I have tea, coffee and toast "on tap" and the three standard meals per the hospital menu.

This time around I will be entering the maternity ward with a dr-confirmed intolerance to gluten. What will happen now? Will the hospital cater to that with the standard meals? (or will I starve? ) Presumably I will need to take my own snacks instead of having toast there.

Starve I think , I know in private hospitals you can get meals to your allergies/intollances. I would be best to ask before you give birth.

they will cater for it. all public hospitals have about 20-30 different diet codes that they can cook to. gluten free is fairly straightforward for them. make sure you tell your nurse as soon as you're admitted.

T, the hospital will cater to your diet but you may still want to bring some food in your hospital stay bag, pack some corn thins or something, and ask family to bring extra food in.

At Wellington hospital you need to fill out a meal card and specify any dietary requirements but I got to the ward at 11pm (too late to fill in the meal card) and noone let the kitchen know about me so for breakfast I got a container of yoghurt and a small bowl of stewed fruit - not really a decent meal for a BFing mum who's recovering from birth but I had my own snacks anyway so wasn't bothered.

I know that "in theory" they are supposed to cater for your needs, but most of the time it doesnt work like that. Everytime I have been in hospital I have had to ask my DH to bring food in for me, as the hospital havent provided me with dairy free meals. For example - they would bring me toast but wouldnt bring me butter or margarine with it, so I would get dry toast. I think its safe to assume that taking your own food in might be the best option!

I agree with Sam, I'd take your own and consider whatever else they give you that you can eat a bonus. When Sienna had her kidney surgery and I was breast/express feeding them I was egg/milk/peanut/soy free, most meals were stuffed up, some meals I never even got anything and the ones I did get that were egg/milk/peanut/soy free were also gluten free so pretty revolting!

The nurses need to notify the kitchen if you have any special requirements so they can cater for you. Having said that I was in hospital for a few nights last week and I got about 80% of what I actually ordered on their little cards. I ended up quite hungry. Fortunately DP came to visit each day and got me muffin break or subway.

I think that the official processes / procedures are great, but they often fall short in at the kitchen end.

I suspect that often they just removed the "offending" item from the normal tray, so in my case they would just take the butter and milk off the breakfast tray. (mmmm dry toast and dry cereal!)
