Well we have the dreaded pukey vomits doing the rounds at our place at the moment . My 2 1/2 year old is now over it (except being terrified of going to bed, but that is whole other post ) but wee Sophie has now picked it up. The main problem is formula - she has kept 3 small serves of pureed pear down in the last 24 hours but yesterday morning and this morning she vomited the bit of formula I gave her straight back (only gave 100ml instead of 200ml). She is not too keen on taking water of electrolyte solution so I am worried about her fluid levels.

When Amy was about 11 months she had the D of the D & V and the Dr said to switch her to a soy formula for a couple of weeks. Any advice or opinions on doing this for a vomiting baby????

Sorry for rambling on - I am blaming the lack of sleep

Hi ya
When my older kids had the d&v bug my doctor suggested giving watered down sprite or coke. Basically you put around 50mls of the drink and the rest water (around 80mls). It's a good way of getting sugar into the wee ones, and they quite enjoy the bubbles too. It does work, you just have to be patient.

Another option would be to use a syringe to get fluids into her or even a teaspoon. (if it gets that bad.) I wouldnt' be worrying about food for now.... wait until the bug settles and then slowly introduce food back into her diet.

Concentrate on getting her fluids up first. Good luck and I hope you get some sleep soon .

My nearly 10 month (8month corrected) bub just came out of hospital after being pumped full of pedialites for over 24 hours after getting the D & V and ending up dehydrated.

She had an NGT because she's one of those bubba's that doesn't like the taste of sweet things and we couldn't get them in with a syringe.

Because she refuses everything at the moment the doctor told me that as long as she is taking her fruit juice and water bottle every 30 minutes, it doesnt matter so much that she isnt drinking her formula or pedialites or eating solids - the key is as long as there is liquid going in.

Every time baby does a D or V - just try and replace it with the same or more liquid and keep checking fontanelle isnt sinking more

If you could get just 5-10 mls of cool boiled water into her with a syringe or teaspoon every 15 mins or so, that's a start. I would avoid milk for now it's too rich for a sensitve tummy. and build up volume from there as she tolerartes it

I'd avoid the formula too like the others have said.

My gremlins got rotavirus at 13 mths and ended up with nearly a week in hospital, the advice we were given then was no formula or solid foods while there was vomiting, only clear fluids. The ratio they use in hospital is 5ml per minute via syringe of either pedialyte or water depending on what they'll tolerate. The aim is to replace the amounts lost. If they'll take it from a bottle or cup then all good, if not then you pretty much have to hold them down and syringe it in

After the vomiting stops (at least 6 hours, preferably 12) try reintroducing some plain solids (such as the pear you mentioned). Once bub is tolerating that OK you can offer formula again.

A small percentage of babies develop temporary lactose intolerance after a tummy bug in which case soy would be a good choice until that resolves, but I'd check with your doc before trying that, and not until the vomiting has stopped.

Hope this helps, v and d bugs are awful!

When we got D&V really bad in UK trip (11 of us in 48 hours came down with it) Rhylz was only 4 months old so still on formula.. took him to the Dr's over there and told to stop his formula and any Lactose because that makes the D worse... yes we had Soya milk as well which RHylz didn't take too much to... keep up what ever fluids Sophie will drink, although Milk/formula is still important at 8 months I think going a week without it (if she will drink water etc...) won't hurt. Also if shes not drinking alot at a time offer her it off a spoon every couple of minutes - I had to do this with Brooke when she was around that age as she got really sick and dehydrated.
