Sorry for all the questions today! I think too much! Just wondering what peoples opinions are on things like artificial sweetners, and coffee during pregnancy. Coke Zero use to be the only thing I use to drink and I gave it up cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant but now I'm really craving some!!

Hmm - I wouldn't. But then I avoid those artificial sweetners like the plague anyway. It's pretty bad for you at any time - whether or not you're pregnant (I've read some scary articles about it.)
I used to chew quite a bit of sugar-free gum though (since it's so hard to find anything else) but I've cut that out completely since getting pregnant.
I've heard that the odd cup of coffee is not SO bad - like maybe 1-2 per day max??

artificial sweeteners are bad, pregnant or not...
i drink coffee and did thru my pregnancies too, but not a lot. in fact i found tea more appealing. i dont think the occasional coke zero would be that bad, maybe one every couple of weeks?

It's interesting you say that cos there is an article in this months (hot out of my letterbox after I had started this thread) healthy food guide stating that atificial sweetners are safe? I guess it depends on what research you read.
How about store bought mayo? Is that okay cos a lot of them have egg in them?? It's so confusing!!

store brought mayo is safe cause its been pasteurised and/ heat treated so any bugs are well and truly gone.

Anything sugar free has artificial sweeteners. As does most things low fat (like LF yoghurts and such) I've even see calcium supplements with artificial sweeteners in them

What is the difference between coke zero and diet coke? i thought perhaps coke zero was no caffiene. On the rare occasions that I crave a coke I have the full sugar version as its better than having the artificial sweeteners or I buy organic cola (not quite as nice as real coke but still satisfies the craving).
With the coffee etc they recommend no more than 3 caffiene drinks a day, so that's coffee, tea or coke. There is a naturally decaffinated tea you can buy from red seal which tastes pretty good. I steer clear of other decaf stuff as the chemicals to decaffinate make it worse than real coffee.
Store bought mayo and any nz made soft cheeses are safe as they have all been pasturised.

I'm not too sure but I think there are several kinds of artificial sweetners. The one to steer clear of is number 951. But I think it is ok in moderation, but that's just me and everyone feels different

They say you can have 3 cups of caffeine a day. I just have one cup of normal tea and the rest is decafe tea.

Its funny- I was so staunch about what I used to eat... now Im preggo, I eat what I can when I can, because I generally dont want anything I feel so ill.
So I have been eating 2 min noodles, white bread, mayo (hellmans in a jar) all that bad stuff.
Irronically I cant stand the smell of coffee, which annoys me because I love it.
In terms of Artificial Sweetners and all those bad sulphites, preservatives and flavour enhancers- The NZFSA allows it all saying its safe... HOWEVER- remember they also say Aspartame is safe even though its banned in other countries, they say that a certain amount of melamine is also safe.... GO FIGURE!!! you mean it wont kill you?? personnally I dont trust anything chemical.... or the nzfsa.
But I still shove 2 min noodles down, and they are full of chemicals eek.
Youre right- It is confusing..... esp the first 12 weeks!
I say- If youre craving it- have 'a glass'' of coke. it wont kill you... but dont go nuts.

It is so confusing isn't it! I cut out coke zero totally when I first found out I was preggers too, but now I have the odd glass if I feel like it (probably once a week or so). Coffee - I went off completely until about a month ago, now I'll have a cup if I want it but would probably try not to have more than a couple in a day. Mind you thats more because I worry about the effect on my sleep (which is bad enough as is!) more than anything else. I just drink decaf if I feel like a coffee in the afternoon/evening. Actually this is making me feel like one, I might go and make a cup
Oh and yeah I've been generally having full sugar stuff rather than diet stuff while pregnant. The first 15 weeks I was feeling pretty crap and needed the sugar for energy anyway, diet stuff just didn't help me. Now I figure it's probably better for me and bubs just to have the sugar, and it's the one time in my life I'm not worrying excessively about my weight so I'm making the most of it! Having said that if there's diet stuff there then I'll drink/eat it, I don't stress about it too much.

I'm on the "no artificial sweetners" side of the fence Even before I was pregnant I preferred to drink less soft drinks rather than the diet ones.
Regarding decaffeinated coffee - if you check the bag/label it will tell you the decaffeination process that's been used. The Swiss Water Method is one that's fine, as is "natural decaffeination" which uses ethyl acetate. From what I have read (after a friend told me not to drink decaf coz it's "worse than drinking real coffee") the stigma comes from solvents used in the past in the decaffeination process.
I tend to drink decaf coffee now that the thought of a coffee doesn't make me gag I save my "caffeine drinks" for having a nice cold coke if we're out at a pub or something. But I'm probably only having 2 or 3 a week if that?

I don't really drink soft drinks so can't comment on that really - however, would definitely err on the side of the 'purer' one so regular coke.
I had a latte every day during my pregnancy. Can't function otherwise! My midwife had no problem with that.

The last few weeks of my pregnancy with C i was drinking coke by the gallon (well not quite , but i drank a lot of it ....and im not actually sure how much a gallon is ...) and she was fine ....tho in retrospect , it could explain the hyperactiveness....
I think its about everything in moderation ...But i can say from a teeth point of view, sports drinks (esp Powerade) , soft drinks (any kind) and fruit juices are not good for the teeth (and not good for the teeth means dental visits, and who wants that ,pregnant or otherwise ? )

I drink most days 2 cups of coffee... I did the same with DD. With DD I only drank Sprite and that was every sooo often...with this one I crave Coke and generally I use to hate it!! I do have coke but may be a small bottle a week. I dont think it will do any harm.
I never used the AS...so cant say!
And Store bought mayo is fine...its the home made you have to worrya bout. You will find only Cafe's make thier own!!

In regards to caffeine consumption during pregnancy, it is recommend to consume no more than 300mg of caffeine a day. That is equivalent to 3.75 cans of Red Bull (each can has 80mg of caffeine per serving, which is the maximum recommended by the Ministry of Health).
I still drink caffeinated drinks, but stick to that 300mg daily limit.
In terms of artifical sweeteners, I am finding it really hard to stay away from Diet Coke. I get by on one can a day. I tried going cool turkey, but I it didn't work My body craved the caffeine.

In USA- you can get a 'Big Gulp' from McD's and places like that- they are a gallon, and free refills too!!!!! Everything there is so masssive.
Also ussually fries/chips are free refills too- I would be making good use of that at the mo!!! lol

if your recipe for lemon honey is cooked therefore the eggs are then yes you can eat it.
thanks for the info on store bought mayo - i've steered clear of it through out my pregnancy cos of the eggs.
As for decaf coffee - search for the water decaffeinated coffee, still contains approx 5% caffeine but doesn't use chemicals. Ones I've found so far are: Altura, karajoz & jungle - sure there are more out there.
