Hi, sure I have read this somewhere but cannot find it anywhere.

I am going to express some milk to give my poor nipples a breather, how much milk should a newborn take in one go?

Depends on the newborn! There's a calculator at http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkcalc.html - Kellymom

Fi, be carefull with doing that, that you dont get nipple confusion.
My MW wont let me give Ruby a bottle until she is 4 weeks old because if they get confused they might make your nipples worse by not latching properly.

Sorry that doesnt answer the question!

My midwife said to try and give them a bottle feed once every day or so from week one, to get them used to taking a bottle.

From memory, Chloe drank around 40-60mL of EBM when she was a newborn.

Gremlins were on EBM from 6 days and would take between 60-100ml. I would offer them 60ml first then more if they took it all rather than heating the whole 100ml coz it was so hard to tip it down the sink if they didn't finish it all!

The other thing I found helpful was spending some time at Family Centre to try and get them back on the breast.

Yep about 60-100ml sounds right. I never heated mine though so it was easier to keep for the next feed if enough left to be worth keeping.

I had to take the chill off mine in a jug of boiling water coz I kept it in the fridge between expressing and feeding but at night I used to take the bottles out and leave them on the bench between their 10pm and 2am feeds so I didn't have to wait for the jug to boil and the bottles to heat while they screamed. It's OK at room temp for up to 6 hours.

thanks ladies!!

Might give it a go today, my midwife says it is ok to do especially if my nipples are really getting sore and one side really is bleeding a lot now.
