My 3 month old daughter has been diagnosed with reflux and prescribed gaviscon infant. Im not sure if I want to use this long term and was wondering if anyone else out there has used it and what are your thoughts and experiences. Also has anyone used the reflux formula as I both breast feed and bottle feed. Does the reflux formula ease any of the symptoms of reflux?? My daughter is very spilly, seems to have excess dribble and squirms after feeds.   Any advice gladly accepted.

We used gaviscon for Josiah from about 6 weeks old until he was about 5 months old. It eased his silent reflux, and he was a lot happier. I phased out the gavescon over a couple of weeks (after he was having solids regularly) as it became obvious he no longer needed it. I don't know if Josiah being on solids made any difference, but the gaviscon definitly helped him for the time he was on it.

Hi Becca

Thanks for your help. Did you use it with every feed?? I used it last night for the first time and it defintly worked. My doctor said to use it as often as I like but on the box it says three times a day. Help???

Congrats on your pregnancy

Gaviscon did help with our first child (not with our second). Yes it is a pain to mix up but hey if it works aye. There is a natural alternative to gaviscon that doesnt cause constipation called rhuger drops.

You can use gaviscon with every feed if you want. But just be warned a side effect is constipation. So i would prob only use it as your baby dictates.

the AR formula didnt work for us actually made the screaming worse. But for some people it does help. Has anyone suggested that it could be a dairy allergy causing the reflux? As a 3rd off all babies with reflux have a dairy allergy.

Hi angel

Thanks for the advice. How do I know if it is a dairy allergy?? Do I need to cut all dairy products out of my diet, (still breastfeeding) or just milk. Also I didnt realise gaviscon can cause constipation. Thanks for the heads up. I only used it once yesterday before bed time and it helped. I think I might also try the AR and see if it helps.

Yeah the only way is to trial dairy free for a fortnight. It is a pain but if in the end it stops the reflux then its all good. I removed all dairy from my diet when i did the trial so it means looking at every product you buy or use to see if it contains milk or milk products.

Some people have had success with just removing obvious dairy. ie, milk, cheese, youghurt.

ps. If you do try the AR it is cows milk based so there will be no point in going dairy free youself.

here is a good website to look at too http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz - crying over spilt milk

We used Gaviscon every feed, Id quickly mix it up when making his bottle or get hubby to make it if I was b/f (I b/f him till 6 months) I found it worked and then when he started solids I stopped giving the gaviscon as I too didnt want to give it to him long term, He now is not needing any gaviscon as the solids are just doing the same thing

I use zantac (dont no the difference between this and gaviscon) before his first morning. I have tried not giving it to him but he goes back to spilling heaps. The plunket nurse told me to start solids around 4-4.5 months.

It's partly the starting solids and partly the fact that around the same time bubs starts to be able to sit up independently which makes it easier for them to bring up their own wind and reduces the reflux (Kind of like propping ourselves up on pillows eases pregnancy reflux/heartburn).

Maria, is Jayde still on the Pepti Junr?

Nope. We took slowly weaned her after she turned 1. She will only drink about 250mls of milk a day but she gets it in other things.

I have included thickening on my web site under Reflux Information, umong other treatments.

As I have learnt there are many aspects of reflux, allergies etc which there is so much never included, and that is why I have included it within the web site.

It seems to be a never ending task, always something more to add.

Maya won't take milk either So I am still buying the bl**dy expensive rice milk! Funny baby will have yoghurt and stuff tho...

I guess we were really lucky that she didn't have reflux with all her allergies, although the fails to thrive was bad enough.

I have just started using the Gaviscon but it made my daughter terribly constipated. The poor thing
She's only 3 months old. A bit disappointing because the gaviscon was working but I dont want to use it now and make her constipated. Any other ideas or even ideas for the constiaption??

Yep like i suggested before the rhuger drops. their phone number is either 08002rhuger or 08004rhuger. Its $25 for one bottle + postage or 2 bottles for $50 postage free.   This stuff is fantastic and the pharmacist that makes it is so knowledgeable. Rhuger is also helpful when children are first starting solids and get a bit constipated.

Or if you want to continue on the gaviscon. Try to give her some boiled water after every feed. soaking prunes in boiled water will help more but be warned with the reflux the prunes may make it worse.
