hang on I have a book - will go off and see what it says

Edit: ok here it is:

Blot with a clean white towel and a spot remover available at supermarkets or hardware stores.
Apply the spot remover to the towel never directly onto the carpet. Otherwise, it can soak into the carpet backing or pad and attract more dirt.

In a pinch: If you don't have any spot remover around the house, use an acetone-based nail polish remover. Do not use it on acetate fabric however as it dissolves the fabric.

Good luck!
