Have you checked out http://www.sorted.org.nz - www.sorted.org.nz ? You could also see a free budget adviser from citizens advice to help you get started.

I use a spreadsheet and list our fortnightly expenses, deduct these from our fortnightly income and what's left over is allocated to personal cash/savings.

I am sure I waste loads too....

I have a spreadsheet.

The Top row is our income which is in positive then the bottom rows are all our expenses...e.g Mortgage, daycare, sky, Mercury, telecom, rates, food, and personal expenses as well as Savings.

The last row will total the first to last row, giving you what you have left over...if it is in Neg then you have to cut down on some expenses above and if you hav a pos then you can add a bit more to saving etc...

I have a speadsheet that goes all the way to Dec 09...he he ha ha Yah I am a nutter......also an Accountant!!

If you need help just PM me. the hardest thing is to stick to the budget. Few times we dont but if you really plan ahead its not impossible. So for example if you have budgeted $100 for food for the week...take the $100 and use it...nothing more!!
Eftpos card is the biggest problem for us as you swipe and it accepts and you have no idea how muc you have spent!

Another hint for making your budget work once you have done it is to allocate some guilt free spending money.....maybe even transfer that to a separate account with a different eftpos card and then that is ALL you are allowed to spend and when it runs out...tough, you have to wait till next lot.  THen dont take your other eftpos card out at all....that account will then be for all your bills.  Another account can be for savings and that wont be accessible by ANY eftpos card.

I have multiple accounts (DH thinks I'm mad) but I transfer a set amount over ea month for bills, some for my spending, Tom's spending and DH's spending (all diff accounts) and savings.  The bills account covers everything including WOF/Rego for car even though they are once off.  Also services for car. That way when something needs doing the money is already there in the account.

We have a seperate bill account that hangs off our joint account and can't be accessed via card only by internet transfer. We worked out all our bills for the year, right down to dog rego and then split that by 52 (weekly paid) and pay that into it plus a little extra just incase. That way we can pay insurances etc yearly and get the discount but not have to struggle to find big cash lumps for it.
Then in the joint account we leave money for food/groceries, then I have an account with my spending/petrol money and Dh has the same and then we have a savings account and all extra money goes in there, DH's wage varies depending on overtime, standby money for call outs etc.

I still use eftpos for my spending but there is only a set amount in those accounts so if I try to over spend I have the humiliation of my card being declined!

If you have a cc, we do for internet purchases, then try not having it in your wallet that way it is harder to impulse buy.
