Hmm...
While I don't see anything wrong with a group of people who share the same beliefs wanting to live near each other (makes sense in many ways) this sounds pretty full on to me too. It sounds like there's being a lot of pressure put on people to move (From the article - "You'd shift for a payrise?" he asks his followers. "Would you shift for the purpose of God?")
Everyone's got a right to believe what they want, of course, and even if someone has very different views I wouldn't lable them a cult if they're choosing to live that way out of free will. It's when people's choices get taken away that things get cultish... have to admit that this sounds a little bit that way to me. If it was my Mum selling up her property, I'd be worried.

I use to be good friends with some people from destinys church and from stuff they had said to me i certainly thought of it as a cult! they had automatic payments set up to go to the church which shocked me and one of them even "donated" a very expensive lifestyle block to them!! crazy if you ask me!!

Friends of ours belong to a church in Howick (not Destiny or anything) and they have an AP payment to the church as well...I must admit I did find it strange as well but maybe it's quite common? But donating a lifestyle block...geez!
|

Well, we do dontate to our Church... we don't have an AP set up, but maybe that's just convinient for them? At the same time, the amount of money that gets donated is what gets to me. I mean, a lifestyle block?!
I'm happy to give to our church, because I know how the money is spent, and I'm happy with it (mostly on repairs, seminars, things like that). If I was lining someone's pockets, I'd be getting out!

Im not a fan of Brian Tamaki but I did come across this article which puts a slightly different twist on the original story.
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4743471a11.html - http://www.stuff.co.nz/4743471a11.html
Still dont know who is more trustworthy, the media or Brian. But it wouldn't have been the first time that newspapers have twisted the truth for a good story.

Donating to the Church is called Tithing and it is actually a very common practice. Nothing at all sinister about an AP going to the Church. The donation of a lifestyle block though.... VERY generous!
I'd not go so far as to call it a cult, but it certainly isn't something I'd be into at all.

You should read her book Mel , I'll try remember what it was called, was fascinating.
My friend's mum went to DC , and a fellow church member came over one night when i happened to be there too, and proceeded to tell my friend's mum, that the reason their youngest daughter was autistic was because of the mums " past sins " and other hurtful stuff, I looked up from my plate and said " whats that saying? he whos without sin , cast the first stone ?" and she got sooooo mad , twas very very funny ...thats not necessarily a destiny church trait , but it wasn't a very good trait to have at all ,either way ..

It is a normal part of church, but Brian Tamaki preaches the verse from Malachai every service, and the amount he expects is a % of a persons income.
Oh well a fool and his money are easily parted. and someone once said if you want to be rich build a church.

Yeah 10% is the normal tithing amount but a lot of people may not be able to afford that so tithe happily what they can. I used to have an AP set up also...we normally do it through internet banking now.

Yep, we give 10% as well, but not just to church - we give to other church-related organisations. That's our choice and we don't get pressure at church that we must give that amount.
I was a little alarmed by the phrase that BT was wanting to establish a 'holy nation' in South Auckland, but wonder if that's his phrase or the media's.

Setting up an AP to tithe at church isn't uncommon. If we had a set wage and knew how much we wanted to give each week, I would probably do it too. But we don't get any pressure at church to give a lot... it's a personal thing.
I think that the whole plan of a secluded area for Destiny church members could be quite scary, potentially... especially if it's going to be how the media make out.

On the topic of Destiny Church...this is today's news to stew about..
DESTINY CHURCH is set to become an Urban Maori Authority meaning it could be in line for millions of dollars in government contracts and Waitangi Treaty payouts.
Yep...meaning tax payers money will start funding Brian's cult...great..

Claims for Treaty of Waitangi have now closed I think so he can't get any of that money (well new claims that is).
I can not believe John and Willie are behind him. I listen to them at work and usually agree with them - THIS I SO DO NOT!!!!
He has already tried to get into parliment before and failed.

He can get that money Becks. He is joining a group - can't remember it's name -that is on behalf of maori with no iwi - or who have forgotten. So rather than it being a new treaty claim, it is an old established one, just he is joining the new group....if you get what I mean.

DH knows where the land is that he is wanted to buy, it's where he used to work. He was talking to someone there on Friday and apparently they have been to the site quite a few times, and are even looking at buying the netball courts next door.
The thing that concerns me most is that it's going to be a walled city, so what happens when the kids turn 18 and decide that they dont' want to be part of his city anymore? What happens if people start questioning his views?
Ohhhh it's just too wierd for me to even comprehend.
