Ok, Grammar freaks!  Which is correct.  Thomas's or Thomas'?  It seems that either is acceptable but what is normal?  I really need to get on top of this one....especially as we might have the same problem if Peppercorn is another boy.

You should use a double 'S'. For example, Thomas's bike.

agreed, If its in the context of something Thomas has eg " Thomas's baby brother ....James"

haha , James is the only other name I know that has an S at the end ,making it James's carseat etc ...

actually, both forms are correct. You can use whichever you like. i prefer thomas' bike, as thomas's bike sounds a bit like gollum to me!

Yeah I was always under the assumption (and from what I remember from school), that if an "s" is already at the end of the name, you don't need to add another "s".  So you'd just use an ' at the end.  Like my MIL is Jos, so when I'm saying "we rent  Jos' house", I don't put an extra s on the end.

Yes I think both are correct when the word ends in "s"

I thought this too, and was confused when I came across "St Thomas's School". Apparently that's what the university scholars said was correct, so that's how it's spelt.

I still use Thomas' in any other context, just cos Thomas's looks wrong to me... but both are technically correct

I don't an extra s either (that's the way I was taught). It's not just for Thomas' and James' but it can also be for the likes of Mr and Mrs Peppers' garden etc.

Just don't do childrens', okay?

Hmmm

I think Thomas's bike, but if there were 2 boys called Thomas, if would be the Thomas' bikes.

ie if the word that ends in s is a plural, you don't add the extra s?

I was sure I was taught not to put the extra s but it seems more common these days to do it.  I wrote it somewhere the other day and am just not happy with that extra s.  Thing is, I am going to have to teach him how to do it and then school will probably teach the other way....arrrggghhh!!!!

DJ...if there are 2 boys called Thomas I think they become the Thomases and as for how they own something I have no idea....preferably they each have their own and as Bizzy says, they just belong to them.
