so anyway i got my hand mashed when 2 heavy metal poles collapsed on each other with my hand in the middle yesterday. only a finger and my thumb are badly affected, they wouldn't xray cos i was pg so they popped the bones back into place and sent me home. i am taking panadol every 4 hours but am in agony and its so painful if i move it by mistake that i get the shakes is there anything else i can do to make it hurt less? -------------

Oh, you poor thing! I hope it heals quickly. Unfortunately there's very little you can do. You could see your chemist about hiring a tens machine (but check first that it's safe - they're ok during labour but not sure about pregnancy). Rescue remedy. Hypnotherapy. Distraction (when the pain get really bad try focussing on something else, you could try holding a handful of ice in the other hand until that hurts or pray/meditate). Heat is good. Have you got a wheatbag you can use on it? When I broke my arm, I still had a lot of pain after the plaster came off, moving it was agony for a while and I kept the wheatbag nearby all the the time as it helped relax all the muscles so it wasn't quite as bad. Alternatively, ice can help too. Especially if its very swollen and bruised. Frozen peas in a teatowel work very well. Keep your hand elevated as much as possible. Up across your chest, in a sling if you can. Having the blood flowing slower stops it from throbbing as badly and can reduce swelling. Also, Whenever I had to use my arm for something, getting dressed etc, I'd count out loud while the pain was really bad. Really loud while it was at it's worst and then quieter as it eased off. Keep topping yourself up with panadol too, don't hold off until it gets really bad again. It actually works better if you take it at the 4-6 hour mark after your last dose even if the pain hasn't built up yet. (Check with your mw regarding the safe doseage, but I'm 99% certain you can still take the 2 pills up to 6x in 24hrs) I hope this helps a bit and I hope you're feeling better really soon! ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

| I was going to suggest the natural option too like rescue remedy..also perhaps arnica drops? I always find them really good for pain...might just need to check whether they're okay during pregnancy though... |

should i be worried about the fac tthat it keep losing feeling. it was really bad when i got up thismonring i stil cant move it nad it is so swollen all the skin is real taut but unless i touch it quite hard i cant really feel anything. in fact im using it to hit the key board when i type. its like having a hrd plastic fake thumb

I hate to say it hun, but it might be broken! I broke my hand and all I did was whack it on the bannister as I was walking up the stairs!!!
I had to have surgery or else my hand would have healed like a claw. If the swelling is still bad (which I would assume it is) then keep it elevated and cool. I know that if mine wasnt elevated it was sooooo painful. Poor you, big hugs!!! -------------

cheers for the advice. ill book in for the doctor cos he can send me to pacific radiology. im pretty sure they will still xray pregnant ppl at pacific radiology so will try and get a referal form for there. when i run over the inside knuckle of my finger it feels like there is glass in it so i think i may have chipped that too. id rather get an xray so i know what is actualy wrong. they have lead aprons and stuff now so its pretty low risk. and at the moment, i cant pick up the kids or do up their carseats so im stuck at home during the day and cant do much at work either so i dont want to risk doing long term damage by struggling through
dam it doctor is totally booked. i cant tell whether my thumb is numb or getting better. lol. ive taken no more painkillers to see if that makes a difference but if its stil really bung 2mrw im going to have to cough up and go to after hours. -------------
