After posting in the threas about the spider I realised I have a habit of turning my shoes upside down if I leave them outside and always shake them out before putting them back on...this is something I have done since I was little and living in Aussie with my family before we moved here.

Another thing is I keep glasses in the fridge..also from living in Aussie so that drinks were always as cold as they could be, rather than using warm glasses from the cupboard.

My question is..What are your quirks/habits that you've picked up from family members etc?

I'll always polish my apples on my top - even though I'm sure that does nothing to clean them!

And I'll always break my eggs into a cup, bought or not - this stems from back on the farm when sometimes the odd egg wasn't as fresh as it should be.

LOL Hopes I do the same with my eggs too. I never used to, but once I was making a cake and cracking the eggs straight into the flour mixture when the last one I cracked in was off Really peeved me off and I had to throw it all out! So now I always break them individually into a cup first.

Another thing I do - y'know when you have a drink and the glass leaves a ring from the condensation, after I pick up the glass and taken a drink, I always put the glass back down exactly where the ring is, line it up perfect and everything! Slightly OCD I think

Umm, I have to use matching coloured pegs for things.
So, two white pegs or two pink pegs... Never one white, one pink.

And, ummm... Hahaha, if I can coordinate the pegs with clothing, I will. So White pegs for white garments, pink pegs for red/pink garments, green pegs for green garments... So on and so forth.
And if I run out of matching pegs, then it gets hung inside on the clothes horse

Also, my dishes have to be done in a certain order.

I think it comes down to being OCD more than it being a quirk, hahaha.

I do the apple polishing thing on my shirt too, I won't eat an apple, or a plum for that matter, unless it's shiny from being polished on my shirt. Lol.

Hmm, what else?

Can't think of anything at this stage.

It's just the pegs and dishes that are my main ones.
Not that that's something that was picked up from family, just a quirk I developed.

I can't take the front item on the shelf at the supermarket.... I have to go for one behind, just in case there is something wrong with the front one!!

I also never finish the bit of a burger that I hold - DH always gets a small bit of burger otherwise it won't get eaten! Dunno what that one is about.

I have to hang all my clothes hanging the same way in the wardrobe, with hangers also all facing the same way.

Crazy lady!!

LOL at the burger thing...that actually made me remember a discussion I had with a friend about takeaways (as in McD's)...I ALWAYS eat the chips first and then the burger, I tried to make myself eat the burger first (like she did) but it felt wrong!

And if I'm out at dinner and I know I'm not going to be able to finish my meal I make sure I eat all the meat so that it's just salad or potatoes etc left..they seem like less of a waste than meat

My pantry has to be sorted in a certain way.

Things have a place and i get really peeved if DH puts things back on the wrong shelf and/or in the wrong place on the shelf.

All the tins are together, in rows (from the back ) !1.Coconut Cream, Kidney Beans, Tomatoes
2. Baked Beans, Spaghetti, Tin Soup
3. Jars/Tins or meal sauces
4. Tuna, Pineapple, Beetroot

Etc.

I can't bear to see plugs switched on if there is nothing plugged into them.

I can't stand walking on smooth concrete with bare feet - it makes my skin crawl

I always eat the chips before the burger too

Ohanlon - snap on the volume thing! DH is the same too - it has to either be an even number or a multiple of 5

Snap on the chips - they go cold if you eat the burger first!

I also like to have lights on - sometimes even when it's quite light outside. It makes the room brighter - but annoys Dh no end!

remembered after i posted
- left sock always goes on first
- i always eat the meat last , the chips first at maccas etc and the drink last.
- towels have to be folded the same way , in half and in half, then into 3.

Ok, so I originally read this thread thinking you're a bunch of nutters  but then mummsymoo and a few others went and posted about my quirks.

I have to use matching pegs and I like to use the same colour on all clothes on the line (ie. I have 4 lines so one line might be all pink pegs, another will be all purple pegs etc).

I used to wash my dishes in a certain order (but I think that's my OCD too) and now I use a dishwasher things have their place.  If the dishwasher has been packed wrong by DH I will unpack the dirty dishes and repack them in the right order.

I won't have the volume of my MP3 on an odd number either.

I hate seeing plugs on when there's nothing plugged in too, it doesn't matter where I am I'll turn them off.

If someone says something that reminds me of a song I'll start singing it (my mum does this too).

I always wash fruit and chop it up before eating it (I won't just grab and apple or pear and eat it whole).

Actually most of my quirks are more OCD than anything else.

LOL so funny reading these and going "oh yeah, I do that too" and couldn't think of them before.

I used to be like that with my pegs too, but that was before DD came along and now I'm in such a rush I just grab any old pegs but cringe when I do it. However if I'm not in such a rush and can take my time, then I will make sure I grab 2 matching coloured pegs.

And I change the loo roll around at other people's houses too.

Oh and another thing, when I fold the towels, they have to be folded a certain way and sit a certain way in the cupboard i.e. folded edges out and with the embossment (sp?) face up. If DH folds them (which isn't very often) they just get rolled up in any old manner and shoved in the cupboard. When he's not looking I go back and refold them hehe.

And, my washing has to be hung a certain way too otherwise it won't dry efficiently. If DH hangs the washing (again, not very often) we still end up with damp patches where he's doubled over the garment on the line. I hate that. Trousers and boxers should be hung by the back of the waistband, not the whole waistband. I could go on about my washing......

Aren't our little quirks/OCD moments just the funniest things?

That's me too. No-one else is allowed to fold my towels cos they just don't do it right!!

I can't think of anything I do - but there must some be some strange things.

DH though - he's got LOADS, here's a couple:
- When cleaning teeth, he can't leave the bathroom until the little bubble in the middle of the plughole in the sink has completely gone
- He does 'bed-check' every night. Torch check under and behind bed and hand run all over bottom sheet - to check for bugs/spiders. In 30 years of doing this he's NEVER once found a bug - but he still continues to do it. Drives me crazy cos it wakes me up if I'm already in bed.
- His CDs have to be stored in the rack in alphabetical order.
- Lawns have to be mowed, and front door washed down. Doesn't matter how grubby the kitchen or bathroom is - outside comes first. Think it's the Irish in him!

God, he does sound like an OCD candidate doesn't he!!

I don't think I have any quirks but my DH is always giving me grief about my OCD tendencies -

I have to do the 'even' number thing too, this also applies to eating food, can't just have one piece or one bite of anything, has to at least be 2. Weird thing though, 3 is okay, but no other odd number is!!

I can't have different foods touching on a plate.

When I eat off a plate it has to be placed a certain way on the table, not too sure what is the correct way, but I just know when I put my plate down it feels 'right'.

A light can never be left on in a room when no ones in there, even when I'm at someone elses house.

The two tv remotes have to be lined up straight and on top of each other after they are used.

I can only eat the same colour lollie at one time - eg, when I buy a bag of jet planes I eat all the red ones first, then I will come back later and eat the orange ones etc.

My salads can only contain green things.

I could go on.......................

Actually having OCD isn't that funny, though.

I actually have it, diagnosed, that is, by a Dr. So does my brother (to the point it seriously affects his life) and Jake already shows signs. Already he HAS to count a sequence to 9 3 times before he goes to bed and you must say the same things to him (in sequence) before you can shut the door, then there is when the door is shut sequence. I feel sick that I have passed on this awful and often debilitating illness to my wee boy.

I could list the things I "have" to do, but I would be here all day, lol. But one of the stranger ones is when I hear music, I "see" it written in its note form, but before it gets to that point, I have to listen to the song and "play" it (on my air piano) to hear where the notes are. Thats for more complex peices, tho. Moslty I can hear it a couple of times and see it . I spend alot of time obsessing about the time (you know, 2/4, 4/4 or 6/8) the music was written in and listening to songs set in a minor key makes me feel very blah.
I cannot walk on cracks in concrete and i count my steps on short walks and cannot take odd numbered steps, I will shorten my steps on a trip to and from the mailbox tomake it even.
Bad spelling (not typos, but bad spelling) and grammer make me feel sick and over use and poor use of apostrophies makes me hypoventilate, no, really. One occasional poster on here uses apostrophies on almost every word and I cannot read her posts as they make me feel very sick.
I also correct peoples grammar or incorrect use of words, in real life, I just can't help it, it makes me feel sick if I don't.

Weird, aye?

However, I have had therapy which enables me to live a more "normal" life, but when I am stressed out or angry, it gets quite obvious that I am a full scale nutter.

Most definitely OCD can be quite serious, and though many of us say "oh that's my OCD I think" unless you truely know what having the disorder means, it really isn't something we should use hap-hazardly. My toilet paper thing, and dishwashing thing are just habits.

Oh when washing dishes I always go from knives, forks etc...to utensils, then glasses, cups, then plates and pots.

You wouldn't be allowed to do dishes at my house.  The glasses always go into the fresh water first, then cups and mugs, then plates and bowls, then the cutlery swept into the sink and I wash the pots and pans then I drain the water, refill the sink with clean soapy water and wash the cutlery.  I also use really really hot water, to a point where my DH can't touch the dishes to dry them without letting them cool off first.

I have a dishwasher now tho.

Oh me too!

My weirdo quirks are (there are a few):

Touching warm, photocopied paper with newly cleaned hands - I have no idea, its like the feet on smooth concrete. ICCCCKKKKK

All volumes have to be on an even number

All bottled water, cans and sauces in the fridge need the labels facing out.

Hanging all clothes the same way in closet - DH really stuffs that one up on a regular basis.

Date Posted: 30 October 2008 at 3:10pm
You're all crazy, hehe! Just kidding.

Same with dishes!

Same with coat hangers facing the same way.

When i'm in the shower I always wash my hair first then when the conditioner is on I can wash myself or shave my legs etc, saves time!

My DD's drawers and wardrobe are really neat and tidy, and her room is the most organised too, dont know why, maybe it's just because they ahve heaps of little things that need to be kept in order.

If I'm eating chocolate i need to have a drink too to wash it down.

Ever since I learned to touchtype at highschool whenever I talk, think, hear conversations, songs - anything with words really, I see the words in my head being typed out on an imaginary keyboard. I left school straight into an office job/secretarial with a law firm, so I do a lot of dictation typing too, which doesn't help. I've been doing my "imaginary typing" for the last 14 years now and it happens so often that it's pretty much just the norm for me now.

Originally posted by MumsyMoo MumsyMoo wrote:

Double snap! I used to hate hanging out washing when I lived at home cos mum had not only lots of different colours, but different sorts! Took me ages!! When I moved out, I got only one colour of pegs lol. Yellow. Then I got given some pink ones too, so the pink ones were only allowed on the clothes horses and the yellow ones for the line.

Oh and while I'm on the subject of washing, I'm very particular about how I hang it out. I have 3 clothes horses inside. I take off dry clothes before I hang wet ones out, and fold them as I go. One clothes horse is for Harry's nappies. The covers are hung on the front row with the velcro doubled back onto the laundry tab on the left side, and they all have to be facing the same way. All colours have to go together (like all blue ones in a row, then green). The inserts hang on the next rows back, different types together. The nappy bin bags are hung on the very bottom row. Oh and Harry's pants are hung on the very back row.

The next clothes horse is for my and DH's clothes. His go on the left, mine on the right. Unless it's jeans - any jeans go on the left hand side. Undies and socks are hung along the back with the pink pegs (they're always left pegged there, one in each little space). Again, his on the left and mine on the right. Socks have to be pegged together. If I have lots of washing, shirts go on clothes hangers along the front. They have to be overlapping the same way.

The next clothes horse is tall and has 3 layers. It's for Harry's clothes and bibs. The top layer is for the bibs - his "good" ones like the ones with sleeves and silly billyz ones go on the right, others on the left. They all have to be facing the same way. The next layer is for his clothes - tshirts and tops on the left, singlets and bodysuits in the middle and pjs on the right. The bottom layer isn't used very much, it's for muzzies and large cloth nappies. I also have a round blue thing with lots of pegs hanging off it... Harry's socks get pegged there in pairs, and also cloth wipes and flannels (in groups of 2, same types together).

So pedantic And I just wasted sooooooo much time explaining all that lol for no reason whatsoever!

Oh and dishes.... I do Harry's bottles (with the bottle brush), glasses, pot lids (they're glass), plastics, plates/bowls, mugs, cutlery (all bunged into the sink), sharp knives (done one by one, not bunged into the sink) then big pots and pans. I use really hot water too.

I cannot drain a hot drink down to the bottom of the cup. I have always from as soon as I can remember drinking coffee and tea, left about 1cm of liquid at the bottom. I t drives my family nuts, but it just feels weird to empty a cup - wrong almost. My grandad was in India at some point used to say it was a politeness thing and i have read that soemwhere else, but not sure that is why i do it

I don't know where I got this from but I always have to buy things in even numbers. So I buy 4 apples or 6 apples, never 5 apples. I will check how many bananas are on a bunch as well and if there is 7 I will snap one off and leave it behind

Redbedrock I also never drink to the bottom, it really winds my DH up. Mum and dad use to use real tea leaves though so it stems from that, cos there was always bits at the bottom of the cup. If i'm at someone elses house though I always try and drink to the bottom, but that last bit has to be forced down.

I only have pink pegs. I hang my clothes out a certain way. Tshirts/pants/pjs jackets/ misc items. Underwear goes in the dryer and never on the line.

I have to pack my shopping trolley a certain way (my sister can vouch for this) I get very grumpy if any one mucks it up. I then have to unload the trolley by areas... so the meat, veges, tinned stuff, boxed stuff etc etc. All of our recycled bags are for certain things... eg: Drinks, frozen stuff, fruit and vege. I think this one is my biggest and craziest one.. very anal about my grocery shopping

I also eat my chips first then my burger.

I think that some of our quirks are inherited from our parents, I know that my Mum taught my sisters and I her order in which to do dishes, glasses, crockery, cutlery the pots and pans, and how she folds towels, and I guess that I normally do that the same way. The one thing that I do do which is kinda funny is count when I use the grater ie how many times I push the cheese or carrott down the grater.

The biggest one I inherited, and those that have seen my FB page, or who know me will be able to vouch for is part of my surname, yup you guessed it - Quirk

Mel, I hang my washing in a certain way too. Towels and heavy items on the front line, hand towels, tea towels and flannels on the second line in, clothing on the last two lines and underwear is always hung on one of the middle lines so it can't be seen from front or back.  I also have some lingerie that I won't hang outside, they go in the airing closet.  Not cos they're kinky or anything, I just don't feel comfortable hanging them where people can see them.

DH and MIL hang the washing any which way (as far as I can tell anyway) and it annoys me no end, even though it dries just as well.

I have to hang my washing a certain way and if anyone hangs my washing out the wrong way I have to change it.

This has been an interesting read! I'm sure I've got some but can't think of many at all.

Claire, I'm the same. I NEVER finish my drinks - whatever I might be drinking.

DH does the number thing but he can't stand having even numbers! He'll set the alarm clock for 5.57 or 6.03 or something like that. He used to be pedantic about the way his washing was folded but I think that's got pretty relaxed now.

I used to have very pedantic way on how how I did everything. Sine having kids I have gotten lazy and dont care as much and I just dont have the time. Most of the things said I would have done onece upon a time.

I still do, however have to hang my washing a particular way on the line, smallest to biggest inside out, socks have to be together and items have to be grouped by who they belong to and then all the different drawers. Oh and if I ever have time I have to match the pegs too.

Every night before I go to sleep I have to arrange my pillows a certain way.

Groceries have to be paced right too. I'm forever reorganizing my bags once packed. I even lay them out on the conveyer-belt a particular way and they still get it wrong. I have worked out the best packers and tend to try go for them (all comes from my checkout chic days - I was the best packer around :P)

I cant stand it if the girls clothes aren't ever on properly, the flower on Maddis hat has to be just the right way and Keira's hair has to be perfect.

Also if I ever get my self a drink of water I will drink up to the last sip of water, tip it out and refill it and continue drinking.

Towels have to be folded into 5th and 3rds.

And I hate odd numbers.

Ok so I though I didnt have many left but I guess I was wrong. I think there must be a little OCD in everyone.

I noticed DH doing it the other night aswell without even realizing. Its a strange one, I dont know what wrong with the last sip in the glass and why I cant top up what water is left.

I put the fries in the burger, and if the burger comes in a box I tip the fries out into the lid and pour sauce on them.

I hang socks by the toe, and shirts by the bottom on the line, and a like my undies hung with 2 pegs.

I get a bit annal about how groceries are packed too, spent time working as a supermarket checkout girl, and got trained in the correct way to pack, DH puts things anywhere in the bags, and they don't stand up in the trolley or boot of the car.

Most of my quirks are habits I've learnt along the way.

Haha gosh we're all a bit weird aren't we! I can identify with soooo many of those quirks.

As for the order of doing dishes, I used to have an order then I read a book which changed my order. It said that you should do dishes in the order of the amount that item comes into contact with you. For instance, cutlery should be done first as it actually goes in your mouth, then glasses/mugs as they sit on your lips. After that, things that you eat your food off and lastly, things that your food is prepared in. It made sense to me

Other than that my main ones are sealing envelopes- I HATE getting envelopes that have just been tucked in. Plus the common even number for volume and colour matching pegs ones.

I can so relate to most of these, especially the towel folding and the toilet roll facing outwards!

My strange one is when I am doing the grocery shopping and I am unloading it onto the counter to be scanned, I have to put all the cans together, all the fruit together, all the bathroom stuff together. I am sure it helps out the checkout operator who packs my bags, but my DH thinks I am for doing it! He just shoves it all on willy nilly and it bugs the crap out of me!

Hmm i cant really think of many, but some are:

If people get lyrics wrong, i have to correct them. Same with spelling and the way words are said. (This drives my best friend mad, but i honestly cant help it and she doesnt get that!)

When having a convo i often turn it into a song, or if something thats said is in a song ill sing it.

I can take most conversations/things that happen and relate it to tv. I do this alot, it also drives my mate mad.

I quote movies/tv shows.. alllll the tiiiime.

"Let's just plop them in front of the TV. I was raised in front of the TV and I turned out TV." (See! i had to do it!)

If the shelf at the supermarket is messy i have to straighten it.

I never finish my hot drinks. My old flatmate hated making me cups of tea cause id never finish them lol.

I used to have to fold the washing a certain way, and it had to be perfect, but now i dont care. I hate washing.

My sister does the peg thing. She hates it when i hang the washing out. Same with putting all the groceries onto the counter.. has to be a certain way. She crazy.

What a funny read, it’s great to know I’m not the only one, I’ve got so many of these quirks!

Thanks Mrs Mojo, I was told I was nuts by a friend – I also have lines of all the same colour pegs! (they do have to be hanging loosely, not pegged up, IYKWIM when they’re not in use). Mikayla’s clothes have their own hanging peg things and her washing is always hung the same way.   Am not as fussy with our clothes, but try to keep things together. Towels and sheets are always last and jocks & socks go in the dryer.

All washing is folded in a certain way and if DH does it wrong I re-fold it. He HATES it!

All items sit face out on shelves. All soft toys sit face out.

CD’s are all in alphabetical order, books by Author and then in order of release or genre.

All coat hangers and clothes are the same way.

Oh yeah, the one DH thought comes 2nd only to the pegs – the bears on the Huggies Disposable Change Mat have to be the right way up! Have gone back to changing her on cloth nappies as no pattern, so I won’t be teased…and he'll NEVER notice that the pink stripe is always down the sides

I have certain bowls/containers for certain things and get all flustered if I can’t use what I want for something, even tho there are heaps of things that will suffice.

OMG, more than I thought and I know there are more, but can’t think of them ATM. I drive DH & people at work NUTS with my ‘analaties’ as a friend at work calls them. She said she didn't miss them when I was on maternity leave.

Both DH and I are also anal about the groceries at the checkout thing. We both used to work the checkouts at a supermarket when we were teenagers - that's how we met - so we were taught the proper way to pack. We always put the groceries on the conveyer belt in groups i.e. meat (for the plastic bags), then (for our reusable bags) cold/deli, tins/jars, bread/biscuits and other soft stuff, toiletries/cleaners, then the fruit/vege but the hard fruit/veges first then the easily munted fruit/veges, and lastly eggs. But the checkout operators/packers STILL get it wrong at the other end and frustrates the h*ll out of us! I especially hate it when they mix the butchery meat with the deli meats

oh and just sitting here eating my toast reminds me - I always leave a mouthful on the plate - don't know why I just do.

I have a few. The toilet paper thing is something I do, although only since Nana told us that she prefers the toilet roll that way as she can feel where the end of the roll is easier than the other way (she is blind).

Dishes - plates first, then glasses/mugs, then cutlery (biggest to smallest). Then pots and pans and stuff.

I always put things together on the conveyor belt - meat with meat, chilled with chilled, soft stuff with soft stuff and veges right at the end. It drives DF mental!! I also have to put them all together in the trolley.

If a door is open, I have to shut it. The girls at work think this is hilarious - the emergency phone in the lift at work often has the door thing "just" open and I HAVE to shut it. Same with the pantry door at home (DF is forever leaving it open). In fact any door at home.

Ummmmm.....in the shower I have to wash my hair, then shave my legs etc, then body wash. If I do it the wrong way, I feel blerggh for the rest of the day. Then when I get out of the shower, I have to put moisturiser on, then go and open the other curtains round the house except the bedroom, then get dressed, then makeup, then bedroom curtains.

They're mainly just habits though.

Even numbers for me, but we are moving to an odd numbered house! I was really pleased when DD was born on the 30/06/08
I don't know why this is, seems a few of us are the same!

I'm the same too with groceries, I always put stuff in order so thsat the check out people will hopefully do it too.

I also have those re-usable shopping bags and I hate it when they use the wrong ones for putting fruit and veg in, but I dont tell them they'd think I was nuts, lol!

I finish most drinks except for tea, I always leave the last bit in the bottom.

My main one is that I can't sleep with any of my hair touching my face or neck. I absolutely hate the feeling of it, so I have this complicated twisty hair flicking manoeuvre that I do before laying my head on the pillow. Quite often that means DH gets a faceful of my hair which he hates.

I think my only other real quirk is that the end of the toilet paper has to be hanging on the outside of the roll (furtherest from the wall) and I have no qualms about changing around other people's toilet rolls if they're the 'wrong' way around

I did think of something that isn't OCD but a quirk I have...

I have to go to sleep facing outwards of the bed, not to the centre, and I have to have the covers up over my ears with only my face (just) showing. MUST have neck, ears covered. Even if its hot, i will put my arm out, but must drag blankies up over neck and ear... I think it stems from far too many vampire books and movies, lol....

I don't know if I would count this as a quirk but i ALWAYS sleep in the side of the bed that is furtherest (is than even a word ) away from the door...wherever we go - ILs, hotel/motel etc that's the side I always sleep on.

I do this too!!! I pull all my hair up so it's over the top of the pillow and not around my face. Weird, but I just hate the feeling of it in bed.

One that I know I do at the moment is I always count the stairs whenever I go up or down them! I don't want to miss one and end up flat on my face in the dark! I quite often count the number of steps I take to the letterbox etc too.

I also try to match the pegs colours or pick up one of each colour when getting them out of the basket.

Toilet rolls must always be hanging away from the wall, one of the ladies at work puts it the other way and I change it every time.

Oh and dishes I normally do: Glasses, mugs, plastic containers, cutlery, plates, pots/pans and oven trays last.

Oh yeah I am the same with sleeping with my head under the blankets. I often make a litle hole so I can breath. I hate sleeping in a sleeping bag when you can pull it far enough up.

I have done this all my life and it used to freak my parents out, they would come in and uncover me and it would really annoy me.

When I first met DH he used to not be abale to stand any of his food touching, all vegies and meats had to be cooked seperately served seperately, eaten seperately and eaten in a particular order Made for an interesting dinner time when I used to cook up stir-frys. I'm so glad hes gotten over it as I love to cook up stirfrys and is no way i could ever be bothered seperating. I do still catch him sometimes eating stirfrys by catergory (meat, beans, pineapple, carrots then noodles etc.)

Am I the only one that has the toilet paper going under, not over? I prefer odd numbers over even too. I'm obviously not "normal" and have issues!

I'm obsessive with my washing and how it's hung out and folded but don't worry about colour co-ordinating pegs.
