I've started using Revlon new complexion foundation and I really love it. Its not too heavy, matches well and lasts all day.
For cleanser I've always used C & C foaming facial wash, as I'm prone to a few spots. They were out of it at the supermarket this morning though so I got a Nutragena one instead. Fingers crossed its ok!

Im a makeup fiend, I did a makeup course a few years ago (actually it was 7 , because it was before C was born )
Always test foundation on your jaw line, the colour thats best for you should disappear, and leave Farmers or the chemist and go look in the natural light (take a mirror) cos their lighting is more flattering ...when your in there (sneaky sneaky !)
It depends what type of skin you have, and how much you want to spend, maybelline mousse is good for slightly oiler skin , if you want a cheapish one, the mineral ones are good if your skin is slightly drier , and the best foundations that i would buy if i was rich , are Laura Mercier, and Bobbi Brown .
In the past i have used
Napolean Perdis
Revlon
Elizabeth Arden
Clarins
Lancome
maybelline
Covergirl
Nutrogena
Mineral Id (this ones really good)
Laura Mercier
Bobbi Brown
...can anyone say fetish ?

I have very sensitive skin so use Dermalogica cleanser.....not cheap but great.
I don't use foundation often but find clinique to be the best. I also recently got some Revlon Mineral make-up powder and it is great! Sooooo natural and I absolutely swear that my skin is nicer since using it. It also has SPF10 which is a bonus. Takes seconds to apply and looks totally natural.

I Elizabeth Arden foundation - lasts all day, and doesn't really look like you are wearing foundation - just nice skin
I just use that pH 5.5 foaming face wash as cleanser.

I use Shiseido Skincare and Foundation I like their Powdery Foundation. Have also just started to use the Intervene Foundation from Arden as well.
I have also tried and liked
Lauder Double Wear
YSL Perfedt touch foundation the one with the Brush attached.
Revlon
Clarins
Lancome
Mac
I work in the Beauty Department at Farmers and would recomend going and get the the Counter Managers to match you to a foundation and some companies are good at giving out samples that will last a couple of days so you can see if you like before you buy. You can also do this at pharmacies

You need to go in somewhere and get someone to colour match your skin tone. Everyone has an underlying tone (eg yellow, olive, beige etc) and you have to get that right to correctly match to your skin.
The 'new' place to test now is the area on your neck just under your ear lobe (I'm doing a fashion and photographic make up course at the moment). Get them to apply the foundation and match it to this area- then make sure you go outside and look at it in natural light before you buy. Often a make up that looks fine under fluorescent light will be terrible once you get outside.
If you can afford it Mac and Bobbi Brown are really good. I have quite oily skin and use clinique stay-true (revlon colour stay before that) which I find really good, but like others have said, its about finding one that works for your skin type too.

I have a Christian Dior compressed powder which I love - they are expensive in the shops so I buy it on Strawberrynet.com. You should go into a shop and try a few and then go online and order cos it is heaps cheaper!
I use Living Nature or Trilogy Cleansers.

I sell nutrimetics so i use their cleansers etc, but I use Shiseido foundation coz I'm hopeless with makeup and need someone to tell me what colour I am lol. Expensive though, $60 for a refil (but at least I don't look orange when I wear it!)
