Not happy!!

I purchased an Avent electric breastpump and it has started playing up. The motor is making strange noises, the suction is variable at times and I can't get it to mimic the pumping action I am trying to set. It always goes much slower. Also, sometimes it changes its pumping action part way through a session. Very annoying!

I have tried reassembling a number of times without luck.

Anyway, I went to the store I bought it from (a major chain) and they want to send it away for up to two weeks. They won't replace it and have no loan scheme, so I will be completely left in the lurch.

Gah!! I am using this every day (every feed actually) as Jackson has had a lot of feeding and weight issues and I need to do this to boost my supply (lactation consultant's orders). I simply can't be without the pump for this long.

It really sucks that such big retail chains are so unflexible. I know they have their policies, but it's a right pain when this is such a unique product that people actually NEED to have access to. At the moment, I am better off with a defective pump than no pump at all.

I am mad.

What a pain! I so don't get it why places like that don't just replace them. They've sold a defective product and the difference between giving you a replacement and you walking away happy and continuing to shop with them, or them mucking you around and you being put off shopping with them, far outweighs the amount they would save in just doing repairs. Idiots. When I worked retail our store had a brilliant policy in that we did anything to make the customer happy- happy customers come back!

i have been given a manual you can borrow as i wont need it anytime soon. lol. a firend gave it to me and it hasnt been used in year so it will have to be sterilized etc... but it is in ins box and has all its parts. im in lower hutt or DH works in the city if your interested

Hi there

I expressed every feed for Lauren for the first 2-3 weeks of her life as I had major b/f issues. On my m/w's advice I hired a double pump from The Baby Factory at $35 per week as she advised that my single electric pump that I had purchased would not cope with that much expressing that it would burn out the motor.

The double pump saved me loads of time as I could express both sides at once! It was an amazing pump and I could express over 200mls in under 10mins.Could hiring one be an option for you while you get your one sorted out? I think the bond was $100 but of course you get that back!

It was my life saver!! I did manage to get Lauren on the boob in the end and she b/f for 7 months with no problems at all!

I also think you should make a complaint to the manager of the store you bought it from. I think that is very poor service!

I am presuming it is either BF or Baby City. We had a similar thing with a faulty Tiny Love mobile that we bought from Baby City. It took over 3 weeks to get it fixed and sorted, with the manufacturer posting me out new parts to try.....why they couldnt have just replaced the thing in the first place I dont understand. They openly admitted it was a faulty product and nothing we had done. We were without it for 3 weeks and at that time it was the only thing that would settle Oli for his day sleeps!

Hiring a pump might be your only option until they get their act together. It might also be worth complaining to their Head Office.....I would. Its just not good enough to leave you in the lurch at such a critical time.

Can you contact the Avent supplier directly?
I did this when a bit broke on my manual pump and they were absolutely fantastic.
When they heard that I was exclusively pumping they sent the replacement part out on an overnight courier free of charge. They even offered to send me another pump to use in the meantime so that Ella wouldn't go hungry until the next day!
I can't remember what the company name was but I got it by explaining my plight to the local pharmacy and they gave me their number, perhaps you could try that?
Good luck Laurie, if you don't manage to get something sorted, I also have an Avent Manual pump that I could lend you if needed.

Avent Ebos are now run by phillips, and as a rule, avent are usually super to deal with, hope this hasn't changes. I would ring them. Also, chemists often hire breats pumps. I would loan you one of mine, but I broke both of the beggers inthe last few months!!!

Thanks for all the offers guys! That's really kind. I can access a manual pump from a friend, I just hate having to use one. Oh well, such is life.

I contacted head office today and they said they would get back to me. Will wait and see what they say...

I had the very same problem with my Avent pump. I was told the same thing about waiting and neither Avent or the store were very nice about it. I explained my problem several times before actually getting through to them all that I was not leaving the store unless I had a replacement pump due to my feeding situation. In the end BF came through for us and gave us another pump that day.
