Anyone know if it is possible to trace phonecalls that have come from a witheld number to a mobile?? Yesterday I had 16 phonecalls from a witheld number, which I didn't answer cos I think its rude when people withold their number. They didn't leave a message, and now today I've already had 3 calls.

Getting a tad annoyed now.

No idea how to do that, but when DH calls from work it always shows as withheld, so it could be a harmless business call - although you'd think if it was they'd leave a message.

Yeah, thats whats annoying me! If it is just a harmless business call then surely they should just leave a message!

And personally I think that 16 calls in one day is close to being classed as a nuisance!

Maybe you could put a voicemail message on your phone politely telling them to either leave a message or stop ringing! It is prob somebody trying to sell you something. I love having caller ID on our home phone and I tend not to answer private numbers as they are usually surveys.

Do any of your friends have confidential numbers? I'm one of those "annoying" people who shows up as Number Withheld - after previous problems with a stalker and nuisance phone calls, my number is now private and will stay that way forever...so it always shows as Number Withheld. I'm also an annoying person who doesn't usually leave a message unless it's work-related

Alot of business's have private numbers, esp when calling from an extension.

I am one of those people who hang up before an answerphone gets it because I don't want to have to pay to speak to a machine.

I say just answer the call! They probably think its annoying your not answering lol

The NZ law is, you have to note down 4 examples, exact day and time and call your provider, they have to be within 7 days, and you have to log the trace within 7 days of the first example.

You have to give permission for your provider to disclose your number to the person doing it and they are told to stop. If they keep doing it, they get warned again and 3rd time they loose their connection and any future connections with that provider.

Due to confidentuality laws, they cannot give you the number of the person calling you, or disclpse who they are.

Sorry chick! Must be really annoying.

LOL, I know its probably annoying them that I'm not answering, but surely if it was that important they'd just leave a message.

I have people who do phone me from private numbers but they always leave me a message. And I've contacted all those people to see if its them and its not.

Ok, maybe I'll just have to answer next time and tell them off!

The other option is to get someone else to answer your phone. My mum had a series of missed calls on her phone, no message but could see the number, I ended up ringing them from my phone and try to id them by being a 'wrong number' call, but as soon as they answered she knew who it was

The one main rule. NEVER give your number to a car dealer and never fill out one of their surveys requesting personal details..... trust me I know im engaged to one hehehe

No...for the police to be involved with phone calls there has to be verbal threats being made.
If they are just hanging up, it is a matter for the phone company.

In my situation I only had 2 calls that I reported to the police. I had more to add to the complaint after I had contacted the police because they kept coming. But it was only a couple days before they told me who had made the calls. I didn't have to give permission to 'a provider'....and not too sure what you actually meant by that lol
Anyway, the police told me who had made the calls. I wanted to press charges, but the guy who did it was going to court the next day anyway on another matter and went to jail.
It was only afterwards I was told I should have still pressed charges regardless of that. But I was just glad it was over.
Oh...and I didn't know the guy personally.....it was my exhusbands girlfriends brother....sicko!

If you go to the police and have a real reason for them to trace they will, like threatening, abusive etc. I work for a phone company and that is the NZ law for someone requesting a trace for nusience calls through their provider. If threatening then we send them to the police as it can be dealt with better. I have had a million and one calls to this nature. Of course the police can disclose any info they like, but as a reputable telephone company its against the confidentuality act for us to disclose this info.
As joshies case was nucience and not threatening, and she asked if she could get it traced, i thought id let her know what she has to do.

Another time, I have had nusience calls with people hanging up and was told by my phone company (was with telecom back then) that there was nothing they could do, except change my phone number. Which was more hassle than what it was worth. We just hung up on the ppl and eventually they lost interest...and we kept the phone off the hook at night so they'd get bored calling lol.

Has there been a change in this over recent years?

Yup, but you have to have 4 dates and times, within 7 days. Its the same with telecom as they are the onles who do the trace for us. But if you have called the number thats making the nucience calls to you, they wont do a thing.

lol DH had something like this and he can't answer his fone while hes working so he left his fone at home so i could answer it.
Turns out it was vodafone but they wouldnt talk to me coz they wanted him so they kept calling and calling about 10 times a day for a week and they got him one day on his lunch break .
All they wanted was for him to upgrade to a contract plan.

PITA

If you have the number that the calls are coming from, the Police *should* take a complaint - it can be classed as Misuse of a Telephone (whether you have referred it to your provider or not).

The police won't unless someone has made a threat to you!
Just calling and not leaving a message is not misuse - no matter how many times. As the reason can easily be that they don't want to leave a message...there is nothing against the law about that.
So no, the police will not take a complaint if the person is just hanging up.

I had something similar a month ago, kept getting a phone call from a withheld number every morning around the same time and i kept missing it cos i was at work, drove me crazy (im one of those people who HAVE to answer the call just incase it could be something interesting) The days I watched my phone waiting for the call it didnt bloody ring....finally got it after about 2 weeks and it was a carpet cleaner from when we moved a year ago asking if we wanted out carpets done this year. Funny thing was the guy was an arrogant prat and we ended up having a fight about how much he charged me (almost twice he had quoted!!!!!) so even if i didnt have new carpet there was no way in hell I would ever use him again!

I guess it depends on which station you go to and how amicable the cop / clerk you talk to is feeling on the day

AFAIK it comes down to individual circumstances, and whether the individual is feeling harassed or not also.

I called the Police more than once and got severa different people and the response was the same...they won't deal with it because lives weren't being threatened.
Oh well..
And for the life of me, I can't think was AFAIK is lol....mind you, its 2.35am, so it might come to me later lol

That's why it can often be better to walk into a station and make a complaint that way. I think it is a bit off that it is a common response - these 'little things' can often be a red flag for something worse... I know I always tried my best to treat each person with respect and understanding *shrug* but anyway!

And 'AFAIK' = As Far As I Know

You are right that it can sometimes lead to something worse. But like everything here in NZ...they don't take action until its too late.

The Malisious (sp?) call centre will take your complaint and trace it if you have the exact times you got called (within a minute or so), you need to have 4 in a row (within 24 hours) to have it done and they only operate Mon-Fri 8am-4pm.
