Stupid (male) doctor has got me freaking out, I am currently sitting here in tears because hes got me so worried .
I went for checkup and he tried to listen for babies heartbeat , (im 9 weeks 3 days going by LMP) and he couldn't hear it, I know that its very early to hear it , but instead of reassuring me that it was too early , he looked and seemed all concerned, and suggested I get bloods and gave me a referral for a scan .
Should I be concerned ? my nausea has gone mostly, not that I had much with this one , ...Im getting worried that my period is really really late and Im not pregnant at all , or that I am but something has happened to baby .
Or is he freaking me out for no reason ...is 9 weeks far enough along to hear the heart beat (hear, not see , didnt have a scan )
sorry for all the questions but Im getting really upset

Hmmm it would depend on how good the equipment is.
I recall my GP saying that the thing they use isnt as good as the MW and not to fret if she couldnt find a heartbeat.

Its way to early to hear the heart beat. What was he using to listen to it? If it was just a regular stethescope then often u cant even hear babies heart beat with them anyway.
Im sure everything will be fine, but can understand how incerdibly awful u must be feeling.
At least if u have a scan u will get to see bubs! Yay!

Oh and another thing- at 8weeks Isla was 1.6mm long,...so you baby is not even 2cm long yet,..imagine how tiny its heart must be! I really doubt anyone could hear it that early!
|

Good point Kellz ... (about the itty bitty baby).
I would jump at the chance for a scan .. any excuse I say!
And when I went for a scan .. I couldnt see the heart beat ... she had to zoom right in for me to see it beating (she obviously could see it as she was saying .. yep look at the healthy heart beat)
So it must be teeny tiny!

I remember at 11 weeks, my mw said we might not be able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler, so yes I think its too early - stupid doctor!!
If it would put your mind at rest, then I say go for the early scan.

Stupid stupid doctor My midwife won't even try using the doppler until after 12 weeks.
It's just too early to hear your baby's teensy weency heart but I'm sure it's beating away good and strong.
Yay that you get to have a scan tomorrow though to see your baby and put your mind at ease. Please try and relax in the meantime.

Your right Jo , I think I should try and relax, worrying isnt going to solve anything .
Think I'll go have a sleep....or try to , for some stupid reason I watched Amityville horror last night , and now have visions of grey little dead girls in my head ....

You gotta remember these guys are general practitioners, not baby experts, and he probably doesn't get a lot of practice with pregnant women since most go through midwives or specialists so he probably doesn't really remember himself what's normal and what's not.
ETA: am referring to the doctor not the little dead grey girl (did you watch the original or the remake?)

I never heard the heartbeat until after 12 week scan as I had seen my midwife when I was about as far along as you and she said it was far too early and they don't like to try and find one and then can't as it freaks woman out.
I agree with Mrs Mojo its not a day to day thing for them any more

Jo , I watched the Remake, I wont even attempt to watch the original ,,,originals scare me a heck of a lot more .....
Thanks Febbabe , I don't know why i've been worrying so much , I didn't hear it till after 12 weeks with Caitlyn .
Im just a lot more paranoid this pregnancy , hopefully once I see baby on screen tomorrow ,i'll feel better

What an idiot! My obstetrician didn't try 'hearing' the heartbeat till after 12 weeks either, at my earlier appointments I got to see it on the scans but the baby is SO SMALL, he had to point it out to me
I'm sure the bloodtest is also only because he didn't know what he was talking about.
Go have your scan - good luck! - and forget about the blood test.

Thinking more about it, your uterus is still hidden safely in your pelvis till about 12 weeks, so how on earth did he expect to hear anything....unless he was trying the dopler in very weird places

OMG, Kelly! Here's me whinging about no babysitter, and here's you having a major freakout!!
I agree with the others.... waaaaay to early to hear a heartbeat with a doppler. My MW couldn't hear Joshua's at my 12 week appt. But she wasn't worried, and then at 16 weeks there it was wow-wow-wow-wowing away

My mw listened for baby's heartbeat at 11 weeks but only after making me promise not to panic if we couldn't hear it - she said she would be more surprised to hear it than not - and that was two weeks further on than you. Silly GP worrying a hormonal woman!!

now Im not only slightly concerned, im effed off too ! after telling me to ring back at 430 and get the results, and the lab nurse also telling me to ring back then , I ring, and ...they aren't back yet.
I know they can get busy , but he wanted me to wait to book a scan until i heard what the blood results were .....at least now I'll know tomorrow , thank goodness I didnt listen to him and went ahead and booked a scan ...im already fretting enough as it is , gah!

Stupid doctor! 9 weeks is far too early to hear. Most people wont even try till atleast 12 weeks cause they know there not going to find it.
Good luck for your scan tomorow i hope everything is good. Even at 7 weeks the sonographer couldnt even see our sprocket and we had to go back the next week when they found her no problems

Hey Kelly.
I know I already posted in the June 09 thread - but I just had a thought...
I remember my midwife saying to me that the heartbeat we hear isn't actually the heart itself - it's the pulse of blood flowing through the umbilical cord - at at that early stage, the placenta and umbilical cord are just as teeny tiny as the heart itself..
Correct me, anyone, if I'm wrong, but I just have a funny memory of my mw saying that to reassure me when it took ages to find Hannah's heartbeat at 14 weeks...
Good luck tomorrow

I was in hospital just after my 12 week scan and the registrar there refused to check for a heartbeat as he said he wasn't skilled enough and would only freak me out when he couldn't find it.
Sounds like your baby is just fine.

Oh kelly, what a stupid doctor!
I heard baby at 10 weeks... during a scan, certainly not with a doppler. My midwife tried at 11w5d with a doppler and she couldnt find it, but there it was again during the next scan at 13 weeks.
You might be able to hear that little heartbeat at your scan tomorrow (not sure if all scan machines can do it or not????).
As for the bloods, why???? At 8 weeks your hcg will be leveling out, at 9 weeks mine had dropped by half (which freaked me out), HCG is unreliable as a one off at this stage in your pregnancy.
I would try not to worry hun (as if you cant, I would be a nervous wreck), and perhaps dont go back to that doctor again for pregnancy related things... time for a midwife?
Hope you manage to get some sleep.

My mw didn't expect to hear anything at 12,5 weeks, as scan had shown placenta at the front.

All the best with your scan tomorrow, and keep us posted.

Argh what a stupid Doctor!!!!!
Hun dont worry! My midwife told me she wouldnt even bother trying to hear the heartbeat before 11 weeks because she didnt want me to get worried if we couldnt hear anything. So at 11 weeks she tried and found it.
Baby is so so so tiny right now sometimes its just impossible to pick up the heartbeat that early, some people dont hear it till 12 weeks +!!
**hugs**

Thanks so much guys :-) , i dont know what I would have done without your support today
Im actually very annoyed with his attitude, because it was his demeanor about it that had me concerned , I mean , I actually said to him "should I be concerned if I cant hear anything ?" and he avoided the question and said "perhaps your not as far along as you thought " ...like he was trying to find reasons for not hearing it !

Obviously Dr D*ck doesn't know much about a baby's heartbeat that early on otherwise he wouldn't of even tried in the first place.

My male doctor did the exact same thing when I was pg with Ashlee at 11 weeks! Except he did add that baby is very small so not to worry. I was just happy enough to be referred for a scan it's later on in the pregnancy that you should be worrying if they can't find the heartbeat. 9 weeks is still really early. Hope you're looking forward to your scan!!! Very exciting

That's great news Bit late to add but thought I would say anyway. My midwife attempted to listen for heartbeat at my 11wk appt with a doppler but said it was unlikely as bubba was still tiny and it depends on where he/she was positioned. in the uterus. We couldn't hear it I was disappointed but not worried as she had explained this before attempting unlike your dumb Dr!!
But we just had our 15wk appt yesterday and got to hear it loud and clear thumping away at 150-160bpm Both DH and I had huge grins on our faces! It's the coolest sound I wish i had recorded it!
So really what I wanted to say is don't panic if you don't hear it with a doppler for a few weeks yet!
