I have two questions about things that are starting to worry me during this pregnancy:

- If you tore during your first birth, will you tear along the scar again in subsequent births?

- If you had really bad cracked nipples which scared (and 4 years later you can still see the scar a little) will they re-crack if you can't latch correctly?

Thanks for any help

Hi Beth

I'm not even pregnant again yet, but have also been worrying about tears ... I started a post about that topic a few months ago - hope this link works:

I had a complicated tear with my first baby and no tears at all with my second.
I was worried about tearing again too and used perineal (sp) massage and (after 36 weeks) EPO capsules up the fufu, in the hope of avoiding it.
I don't know if they are the reason I didn't tear again or if they helped, but they certainly didn't hurt.
I had cracks in my nipples both times but nowhere near as badly the second time round. I asked for and got a lot of help from my midwife and the midwives at the hospital with latching and feeding my son. He was a very hungry baby and seemed to have a much stronger suck than my daughter had, so I think that helped a lot.
Don't be afraid to ask for lots of help, see the lactation consultant at the hospital before you go home if you can, ask your midwife to sit in on feeds so she can give you tips and advice if you need it. Ask on here, there are always people who have been through similar things and have advice and ideas to offer.

All the best Beth, I hope its easier for you this time round!

Not sure about the tear question - I had an episiotomy then a tear.

As for the cracked nipples - I got them again with baby #2 but that's because I hadn't learnt from my mistakes. With baby #3 I told my mw that I had had cracked nipples both times and wanted her to hang around and watch my latching until I really was okay. I got a split from not latching properly and I did start cracking at one point but she was quick to notice and put me on the straight and narrow. I learned a lot more about latching with #3 than with the other two. Part of it I think was that I was a bit more relaxed about taking time to latch - I'm rather overly nipple-sensitive as far as modesty goes.

I had a few labia tears with #1. One of them didn't heal properly, with only the top fused leaving a hole. #2 stretched the hole a little further but didn't tear anything.
#3 stretched the hole more, and I did tear again but it was in a different place to the tears from the previous ones. #4 came out so fast I don't think he had time to tear anything!

I used perineal massage and epo vaginally, but still ended up with vaginal, perineal and labia tears
Still to freaked to have #2 yet
