Refer you to the hospital dentist to have a tooth out? DP has a severe toothache, he cant eat or talk, cant even touch his face and we cant afford a dentist, cant get finance for it and dont have and cant get a credit card. If he goes to the doctor do you think they can refer him to the hospital dentist? We went there and they wont see him unless he is on a benefit or unless hes reffered? ------------- ~ Mummy to a beautiful girl ~ |

Yup that's what happened to my BIL and it was WAY cheaper than seeing the dentist! -------------

Yip, there can be a waiting list and public dentistry is not fully subsidised - ie he may still have to pay for the work but it wouldn't be nearly as much as a private dentist.
Rant alert - I really think dentist services should be at least partially funded by the government. Bad teeth are linked to other health problems that just end up costing the health system more. Rant over. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

Awww I know how he is feeling, pain wise!
To cut a long story short, I had severe toothache, all the same symptoms as your DF and had the tooth removed, but the dentist didn't realise that there was an abecess under the tooth, 1 day later I couldn't eat, found it hard to breathe, face was like a basketball so was rushed into a specialist and then rushed into the hospital where they put a breathing tube down my throat ( remember that clearly  ) and then into a drug induced coma on life support so that they could drain my face, and remove more teeth!! Gees that was a mouthful. This happened 8 years ago. I have no teeth on one side of my jaw.. and my teeth are still shocking!

If your on a benefit you get either $300 or $400 ( i've forgotten which ) a year
Because dentists are privately owned and get to set their own prices etc, they decline the use of Community services cards etc,...makes things very difficult sometimes, because teeth ARE expensive . Some places do loans but you have to be pre approved,which can take weeks and who wants to wait around when you have a sore tooth huh ? Kandice if they take his tooth out ,make sure he does NOT spit out today , tho he will most definetly want to , and doesnt smoke for at least 24 hours , and starts using salt rinses from tomorrow . He'll probably want something smooth or liquidy (and not too hot !) for lunch too -------------

Have you rung around to see how much it would cost for a tooth to be extracted?
DH had severe toothache on Boxing Day last year while on holiday. It ended up being an infected wisdom tooth, but we popped into a local dentist in Whangarei on a public holiday and they extracted the wisdom tooth for $150 on the spot which I thought was amazingly cheap! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

| Does he have a community services card? Some dentists do offer a VERY cheap price with this. At least they used to and I was just looking up info on CSC and it did mention dentists. Pays to ring around. I know Waltham used to. |

| Yeah id be checking how much just to have the tooth out i went to the dentist a couple of years ago with really bad tooth ache and they did a root canal which was around $700 then still had the pain so the took it out cost $50 and wow no more pain! really should have asked about that first! but it was one way at the back so guess where the tooth is would decide if you could do that |

Grrr... this topic makes me mad! I asked to be referred to the hospital from my dentist - that part was no issue... But when it got to the hospital side of things, the only way we would be eligible for public care was if we'd had a community services card which we don't have (by literally, a few dollars!!!!!) but still did not have a spare $3,000 for what I needed done.
So with a CSC card, you'll be sweet. |

Well he got one removed today at the dentist. $190 later. Its not fair. How can dentists cost so much. Cant they just sort out some sort of funding. Even just a few hundred a year!

Dentists can charge so much because they get to set their prices , Ive worked at places that charged $200 for an extraction and others that cost $150 , (and thats for the same tooth , eg an upper back molar )
What you are mostly paying for is the dentists time and the materials, the materials are not cheap , I dread having to make any orders ,and most dentists are busy , for example at the moment I we are booked 3 weeks in advance (so usually recommend people to A and E if toothache is severe) Plus , despite what people think , their job isnt THAT easy , (i get really amused when just ordinary people tell me they could do a root canal..oh really ? what files would you use ?) hence why they study for 5 to six years. But I agree that some funding would be good , guess this is one benefit of being a Dental assistant...all my work is free , should make the most of it while I can ! and its quite rare to find ones that will accept communtiy services cards...mainly cos a lot of dentists ARE greedy ! also , another good thing to note is that some places do SDBs which is free dental treatment for children , (eventually they will be getting less and less dental nurses) and some , not all, we dont , do GDBs which is free dental treatment for 13 to 18 (as in before your 18th birthday ) -------------

yeah I was going to mention that LM, there are nicer dentists out there who let you pay it off , those are good ones to go to , a lot want full payment on the day (but if you cant pay it then and there ,there isn't much they can do except send you an invoice )
The dentist I work for occasionally waves the fee if the patient is going through hard times, eg a patient we had on Monday ,her father is going through cancer so the dentist didnt charge...I like him when he does that, he seems a bit more ......human . Most of the time he isn't .... -------------

I think the new government is looking at getting dentists to start having CSC funding so people can use them there. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I don't know what you or your husband do for a living, and this is really thinking outside of the box here, but what if you offered to "work it off"? This comes from personal experience -- I was at the dentist once, and I could hear the patient in the next chair talking to the dentist about his financial situation, and she suggested that she do the dental work he needed in exchange for some barter work. He was a landscaper and the building's garden was in sore need of some beautifying. I thought that was absolutely brilliant. You might have to ring around a couple of places and ask to speak to the practice manager, and there would no doubt be a contract involved, but it might just be something they'd be willing to consider. I know at Waikato they dont do dentistry work anymore unless you are terminally ill. Our doctor contacted them not long ago for my partner.
We have now found a dentist who is happy for it to by paid off. I'm going for a root canal soon :( Can't hold off any longer. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

you dont need to be on a benifit to recieve emergency dental help from WINZ. if you take a bank statement in that shows you cant make a lump sum then they will pay up to $300. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  tickers" /></a>

Alianasmummy, i rang them yesterday and its $200, plus they wouldnt see us yesterday.
We rang every single dentist number in the phone book, and thats alot! Not one of them would let us pay it off, not even one. They all said payment on the day. So he only got one pulled out and he has to go get the other done next week becasue they think he has a abcess under his tooth, because she jabbed him 3 times for that tooth to make it numb and it wouldnt go numb. So she refused to remove it. DF said he would handle the pain if it meant he no longer had a tooth ache but she wouldnt let him lol. ------------- ~ Mummy to a beautiful girl ~ |

We had a lovely old lady come in once, she has lived here her whole life and has paid all her taxes, she had no money because her husband had died recently and she had taken his ashes to Scotland.
We sent her down to WInz with a winz form thingymajig, and she came back and said they had declined her . So i rang and told them off , and they approved her . I was not impressed . I do know some dentists that will let you pay it off, or get finance, trouble is they have so many people who don't end up paying that they don't really like risking that. And lol at your DP Kandice, We took a man's tooth out with no anesthetic before , a big tough looking guy with tatoos everywhere i could see...and he cried for an hour afterwards ... And they should be able to see if he's got an absess by doing an xray , to save him coming back again just to be told she wont do it -------------
