my son has started slapping across the face and hard..........he doesnt go to daycare or playcenter and hardly watches TV as he is an out door kid so i have no idea where he got it from........how do you stop it.? i have grabbed him saying no...sometimes he smiles like its a game ...we have even pretended to cry ......sometimes he puts his head on you to say sorry but that is short lived. Its driving me insane

Yip know how you feel Luke used to poke our eyes, pull my glasses off, hit e.t.c very distressing and it hurt!!!!

So we say No really loud put him down and move away from him. He would laugh and come to do it again same thng No and we walk away. So we are not giving him attetention, not talking or explaining.

It worked!!

Now we say gentle hands and show him hand over hand how to touch faces and he's fine !

Good luck he will stop!

hehe, I shouldn't laugh but the title sounded so funny.

Just ignore it , when he slaps dont react just walk away. He'll soon realise he wont get any attention for doing it.

DD did this few times too, I dont think they can resist, lol!

Gabrielle does this too - she only does it while I am holding her so I usually tell her NO and then show her how to be gentle. If she does it again I tell her NO - pop her down on the ground and tell her we don't hit.
It is less of a game to her now than it was - she used to laugh after I said no whereas now I can say NO and she will give me a cuddle so keep at it.

I don't think it's anything to do with learning it from somewhere - with Gabrielle I am quite sure it is almost a reflex - she doesn't seem to be doing it for a reaction (anymore) or to hurt anyone.

Michaela hits me occasionally when she's frustrated (usually across the thighs).

She's a year older so I don't no how this method would work for you but for me I usually ask "does mummy hit you?" "no" "would you like mummy to start hitting you" "no" "you hurt my feelings" "sorry mum".  It works for yelling too "does mummy yell at you?" etc etc (although this only works if you don't yell at kids though).

The fact that he laughs at you sometimes when he does it makes it seem like he thinks it's a game and ok behaviour which of course you want to abolish before he has a sibling.  Maybe you could make hitting an instant timeout offence.  You've warned him previously that hitting is not good so taking it a step further by seperating him from you and his toys for 1 minute when he does it should put an end to it pretty quickly.

Good luck.

ETA: I don't think they "learn" it from anywhere.  Kids instinctively lash out when they get really frustrated because they're too little to vocalise their feelings, that's why it's important to teach them to control their emotions and show them acceptable ways to behave.  Also if he's doing it for fun he might like the noise it makes and the reaction he gets.

Jo - I do the same with Z and it works. I also use "thats not very nice...we dont hit people because it gives them Ouchies" And if she still doesnt stop then its crner time! But it never comes to that...she is very quick to say sorry and move on to the next thing.

But I think your little man is way to little to understand all that...so saying NO in a firm voice (with our any expression on your face) moving away should soon work.

I also think they dont learn that from any where at that age...its a natural thing...they cant help it!!
