Hiya,

A friend has given me this massive old timber change table. It has three shelves and is a bit beaten up as it's been in storage in her garden shed. I decided to revamp it so have painted the whole thing white and did the shelves in candy stripes as per the pic below. Problem is that I bought the proper Scotch masking tape but it's absorbing the paint and the paint is running underneath so the lines aren't perfect and i'm really ticked.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any better products for getting a clean paint line?

This is really unhelpful but that's so cute - well done you!

I would only have suggested Scotch tape so no ideas here sorry except maybe you need to wait until one coat is completely dry before doing the one next to it? and make sure the tape is stuck down really tightly? Sorry if you already did that!

I also have to be unhelpful and add that it looks really great!!

I only know of using Scotch tape. Not being knowledgeable on paints here is a silly question...it's not because of the type of paint is it?

I don't have the answer but I have to say that looks fab!

You have to look pretty closely to see the raggedy bits - I bet you won't even see them when it's put together.

Sorry I know it's not helpful but wow! it looks so good! Are you going to tie it in to some fabric in curtains/canvas/duvet?

What type of scotch tape... there's lots of different types of stickyness. The softer the stick the more likely it is to do that. But the downside of the really sticky stuff is that if it's fairly new paint you are sticking it to it can rip the paint off

Have you tried the 3m stuff?

Hi guys,

I was using the 3M blue tape for water based paints. I rang my Dad who knows all about everything and he said to give the base coat a light sand and use the rounded sided of a spoon to push the tape down as the timer was slightly textured. Worked a treat!!! Gotta love those Dads!!

I'll post a pic once it's finished (as long as DH gets of his behind and finishes sanding the legs for me)!!

Edited because I didn't see your last post to say it was all sorted - good to see my advice was the same as your dads (with the exception of using a spoon!)

You have to use your nail to really get the tape stuck down tight, then remove it as soon as you've painted the stripes and the paint is still wet. If that doesn't work perhaps the wood finish is not smooth enough and that is why the paint is seeping underneath?

I think it looks great but if it is really bugging you sand it all down and try again. I find that cheap masking tape usually works perfectly.
