have been looking at the farmers/warehouse catalogues and the trees are gorgeous- all matching decorations and such....compared to mine, which has decorations I made in kindy (think angel picture stuck to margarine lid), tinsel of differnet colour and sometimes literalkl hanging on by a thread....and was thinking - does anone actually DO the matching decoration thing? or is everyone's tree a living memorial to my arts and crafts classes in primary?

Same here
We have a few matching ball things and then have random ornaments - some my parents gave me, and plus we've been buying a special one each Christmas since we were engaged.
It's really cool looking at the ornaments and talking about where we got them from and when. We got Harry his first one last Christmas when he was still in my belly, it's a big daddy snowman holding a baby snowman - so cute! So our tree is kinda a 'story' of our life so far. I like that and as Harry gets older we'll tell him the story of each decoration.
My parents still have decorations we made when we were kids and I think it's so special. Maybe it doesn't look as "perfect" but to me it has a whole lot more meaning.

Totally random here! I look at those colour coordinated trees in shops and stuff and think wow pretty, but nothing like ours lol.

Sort of both, I have matching ones, cause I bought large sets of decorations from the warehouse. I reuse the same decorations each year. We only have a 4ft tree so looks very random when its decorated, as there is only so many decorations that will fit.

We have just moved oseas so had to buy a new tree & decorations. I always wanted to have the one colour on the tree, as always had mismatched dec's. So I have gold with a few ornaments on it with the gold. Looks awesome I'm in awe with my xmas tree lol..
But in saying that if my daughter makes anything at daycare it will be on the tree in an instant.

We buy 1 ornament every year so we have lots of random ones on the tree. But we also have a whole lot of little silver and red baubles which we use as the 'base' IYKWIM so it does end up looking consistent that way.
But we haven't yet got to macaroni and tinsel home-made stage yet - that will be in a few years so ask me then lol!

We bought our tree and decorations last year after having no tree of our own ever and we bought things in just red and gold so they matched. Growing up it was always mismatched decorations that we'd all made and it's nice when each decoration has a memory or story but I have to say I love how our tree looks now.
We let Livvy pick out her own 'first' decoration this year and she picked a silver one so the mismatching is starting and no doubt in a few years it'll be totally random decorations. Once she can start making her own decorations it won't bother me what it looks like.
As for character, our tree leans way over to one side so it has character too. It's like the leaning tower of pisa

We have always had matching and formal trees but this year I decided to do our tree in red and gold and just chuck everything on... much more fun for Neosha. MIL on the other hand has a white tree, a green tree and a black tree and every single colour decoration all in seperate boxes so each year she has a different colour scheme then marks the year on the box eg. the last time she used gold was 2002 I think it's coming up again next year lol. So yes she has it perfectly colour coordinated in a different colour every year but now that I have a kiddie it doesn't really bother me

I've got my parents old tree and decorations, all in red, green and gold and I love it like that, although when bubs arrives and gets bigger we'll probably end up with a bit of a colour mismatch like we used to have when we were kids

My tree is all matching...am feeling bad now The colour scheme changes every year as my mum and I share deocartions so our colours can change each year. This year I am red, white and silver and Mum is pink and purple ( I had that last year). Only ever have the green trees tho.
I am quite anal and like things all matching. DS got his first decoration last xmas and plan on letting him pick one every year but also plan on getting him his own little tree for his room when he is about 5.

Mostly random here, it does match a bit but thats only cos we had no decorations so bought a bulk pack a few years back but the sentimental ones are slowly taking over.
The kids did my parents tree and when we went back round there my Mum had taken it all off and had it all matching. The joys of no kids at home I suppose.

We have random decorations & I buy Alia one each year, this year she can chose her own. I date it as well & I'll start on Coopers
I would love a perfect tree but that will never happen I guess! We get a living tree...Not usually bought though This year we will be buying one because DH isn't back home until the 20th.

Our decorations are all store bought but it's a colourful and random mix of decorations.
For years I decorated our tree silver and blue until DH complained it wasn't colourful enough and so I went out and bought some pink and purple decorations to annoy him since then we've added all sorts of colours.
I never use tinsel though, I hate wrapping it around the tree and taking it down again.

I make most of mine. I have old gold and burnt red with white feathers and gold twine this year.
I have a feeling that once bubs is old enough to get those little fingers in the Xmas box that our matching tree days will be over

This year will be our 1st year with a "tree" with Decorations!
My mum had made a beautiful that we had used for years, and I am a bit of a barhumbug (however it is spelt) lol
This year my boy asked for 1, so we put it up on Sat and he loves it. I have the same colour red & Green

Ours are matching. This year we have blue and silver decorations. Next year I think I'll do the traditional red and gold.
Growing up we always had matching, but we were always allowed to help choose the decorations.

Ours kinda matches. Its courtesy of the warehouse so I bought all new about 5 years ago. It was all gold until I found soem green and red tinsel and thats been added and I bought some lovely ornaments when I was travelling and they are added. No doubt its all going to turn random soon when Tom starts "creating"

Mum does the matching decorations with a different theme each year ie it might be gold & red one year; then silver & blue etc - and I have to say it looks gorgeous
I try to stick to matching decorations and not overload the tree - I've had the same decorations for a few years and just avoid getting any more

Ours has matching decorations for the most part.
I also have photo decorations on our tree, one for each member of the family.
My hubby went out the other day and bought some more decorations, etc though as it was looking a bit sparse. We left all of our Christmas stuff behind in Canada when we moved here.

Ours is matchy, and I like it that way. I don't put up every single decoration we own each year, I just choose the ones that match the colours I want that year, and the rest can get another outing when it's their colour's turn. That said, absolutely every decoration my kids make will go on the tree, and this year there are Ella's first 2 christmas creations, which of course match nothing, but they're proudly perched right at the front. So in years to come, nothing will match at all.

Hmmm. I love Christmas trees but our house is tiny, so we are not having one this year.
In the past I have gone for the matching look, but one year a flattie had all these meaningful decorations, and I quite like that.
Maybe we need a "Pic of your Christmas Tree" thread in the photo gallery? Do come and post your pic!!
