So ... not quite as exciting as when it happens at the "right" time I've found!
My waters broke on Tuesday night, we rushed off to hospital (thankfully only 5 mins from our house) where my obstetrician met us and I (and the baby) was monitored for 4-5 hours till my contractions (!) slowed right down. Luckily they never got a chance to get going and I only needed these tablets to slow them rather than a drip. They also gave me steroid injections to mature the baby's lungs just in case.
I was discharged home on Friday afternoon, but with strict instructions to stay in bed at all times except to go to the loo and shower. The doctor says to take things one day at a time and hope we can keep bubs in as long as possible, so fingers crossed.
[TMI ALERT] I've still got very intermittent leaking of fluid but the baby's been checked and there's plenty of fluid around him and his movements are good, heartbeat strong..
Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Was the outcome OK?? I'm trying to be positive and see each day he stays in as a bonus for getting bigger, but sometimes I get a bit freaked out that it's OK to be at home!

Hey chick,
I can't help personally but I lived with my sister and similar things happened with all three of her kids. One was born around 32 weeks and the others not far off that either.
She had to have a C section (other reasons so don't stress) . She had the steroids etc for the lungs and it was very very stressful for her.
All three stayed put for the steroids to work and the kids are now 15, 12 and 10 years old. They spent time in NICU but were healthy from the get go.
31 weeks is early but just try to relax and get as much rest as possible. Bubs will be just fine. Your body is the best incubator possible and 31 weeks is well past the viable point.
Sending warm fuzzies your way.

Sorry Kiwi, I haven't experience this, but wanted to say how scary for you! But clearly you are obeying Dr's orders and have your feet up, as I see you've been busy on OB tonight!
How long will they try and keep baby "cooking", before they let you deliver?

I haven't experienced it myself but when I was admitted @ 33 weeks another lady in my room had this happen to her. She was allowed go home as she lived in Wellington city so could be at the hospital very quickly if anything happened.
Also this was her second child and had similar happen with her first.
Oh it also happened to an ex-colleagues sister as well and she went home for another month before her bubs was induced! Actually she went home to Tauranga when she would have to travel to Hamilton to have the baby.
Stay positive, rest and concentrate on cooking the bubba. Every day bubs stays in is worth 3 days in NICU, or so I was told before anyway.

Thanks girls
Italiah, I'm not sure how long they'll try keep the baby cooking ... I'm hoping we can keep him in there till Christmas .. that would be fantastic! But when they did a scan a few days ago he was 1.9kg and the doctor was saying once he's over 2kg that's brilliant.
I guess he *could* have arrived on Wednesday morning, so every day he stays put at the moment is a bonus! So good to hear positive stories, especially about early babies doing really well
We're really close to the hospital here so can be there in minutes, definitely helps put my mind at rest a little bit more.
Yep, keeping busy on OB - thank goodness for laptops and wireless internet!!

Mine were born at 35weeks, Aoife was 1.6kgs and Eimear was 2.2kgs (Aoife is now 300gs bigger!). Eimear had CPAP (helps the lungs breathe) for 3 days but other than that we were allowed home once we had feeding established.
And I hear ya on the the laptop & internet. Also I read all the Harry Potter books in the month before I had the twins

Snap! I am halfway through HP & the Deathly Hallows already (having reread the entire series since Wednesday). Luckily I have great girlfriends who are bringing books round all the time

Hi there. At 30 weeks it was apparent Emily was going to be born early, so I had the steroid injection to help mature her lungs. She was born at 31 weeks (for other reasons) weighing only 1.35kg but did really well. Was on CPAP for a few days, and spent 4 weeks in NICU. She was discharged at only 2kg because she was doing so well and there was no reason to keep her in NICU any longer. Your bub has a good weight so it sounds like he will be fine if he has to be delivered now. My SIL was living in Singapore when her waters broke at 34 weeks. She had the steroid injection and he was born a few days later. Was on CPAP and oxygen for a few days and in NICU for (I think) 10 days. He did really well too and no problems. The hospital/NICU unit my SIL and nephew were in in Singapore were really good so it sounds like you'll be in good hands.

Hi, sorry to hear things aren't wonderful but I think I have a story that will help.
At 34 +6 I was hanging some washing out and had what I thought was a show, went to the loo and it was fluid. Phoned mw (got back up as mine was having weekend off), she saw me and warned me I could go into labour etc etc and to take it easy and that my midwife would probably refer me to the hospital on the Monday to be checked out. I went to bed that night and started having mild contractions, then they got annoying so I decided to get up and have a walk around fully expected them to disappear but instead they got worse, I had to rush to the loo (tmi) and after doing my business I had another contraction and my waters broke completely. By 2am we were at the hospital where we then found out he was also breech. I was prepped for surgery and then all of a sudden the contractions just tailed off and stopped of their own accord. I was kept in hospital for 8 days, and 2 days into that stay contractions started, i was prepped again for surgery but it never happen and the next morning I was transferred back to the ward. I was then allowed home on bed rest but got admitted twice again because of more contractions (both times they started whilst at the hospital for monitoring. I got pretty sick of the birthing suites I can tell you.
In the end Spencer was evicted at 38 weeks exactly and had shown no real attempt to get out, he was just being a nuisance
I leaked water for the whole 3 weeks but the fluid level around him was at near normal levels at every scan. The fluid replenishes every 3 hours so the trickle that comes out with yours and babies movements isn't too much to worry about.
Really hope bubs hangs in there a bit longer for you.
Had Spencer been born at 34+6 they said he should have been able to breathe on his own but may have needed help with keeping warm and feeding.

Oh I thought I would just add that him being breech was an extra complication as they were worried about prolapsed cord if I did go in established labour, that is why I stayed so long and was readmitted so quickly at the slightest hint of a tightening. Also we are about 30 mins from the hospital, longer at rush hour and they took that as living far away.
So I wouldn't worry about them letting you go home, especially with being so close.

My waters broke at 24 weeks and 28 weeks and my daughter was born at 30 weeks 3lb1oz she is now a healthy 3.5 year old was little and skinny for ages but sure made up for it now! Good luck I'm sure you will be fine, did they give you steriod injection? I had two both times.
Her story is in the community section along will Kelly's daughter when babies are born too soon.

nictoddie, yup I've had 2 steroid injections while I was in hospital, it was one of the first things they did. OUCH it freaking hurt though!
Thank you all SO much for the positive stories, one of my biggest fears is that my wee boy wouldn't be OK but *logically* I know the odds are on his side now.. it's just great to get reassurances from people who have been there with early bubbas, so thanks

My DS was induced 4 weeks early but was IUGR so only 2.08kg at birth and he was fine, we had 2 weeks in SCBU, the first day or two in an incubator. He is a strapping 7kg now and doing so well, really healthy - I'm sure your wee one will do just fine
Oh, and enjoy the bedrest while you can!

Mine is not quite the same story but here it goes anyways. I had Emma at 30w 6d gestation - I went into labour at 11pm and she was born at 3am the next morning. By the time we arrived at the hospital, I was too far into labour for it to be stopped. She was born naturally, waters broke at birth and she was quite a healthy weight - 2.23kg. She spent 4 weeks at NICU before she was discharged. She did really well and has done really well since too.
She's crawling at doing very well.
Having a prem is scary but at 31+ weeks the outsomes are generally really great.
Anyways, fingers crossed that bub stays in for you. Take it easy & look after you both

Ha! Well the little rascal has given us another scare this afternoon ... I started feeling contractions, really far apart but definite tightening.. probably since I woke up this morning but took me a while to realise what was going on, they were that vague.
Anyhoo, off we traipsed to the hospital where they strapped me onto the monitors, laughed at how much bubs likes kicking away (the noise was deafening!) and gave me more drugs to slow the contractions again. They actually sped up (naughty baby) but then slowed enough for the nurses to decide that it was OK for me to come home.
So I am still having pretty mild contractions but looks like bubs is staying put for now at least. Next doctor's appointment is Thursday, let's hope the baby doesn't get too impatient before then!

I loved being connected to the monitor, listening to the bubbas heartbeats and kicking.
I hope bubs stays put for another while.

Well, he stayed in for a week but in the end he just couldn't wait to join us on the Outside...
Callum Michael arrived at 3.06pm this afternoon weighing 1.92kg. DH and I are bouncing off the walls at the moment, all very surreal.
Callum is in NICU at the moment but breathing on his own and I'm allowed to try breastfeeding tomorrow. Omigosh I'm a mum!!!!
