Last time I had a capsule & then bought my car seat that was for NB up.
This time I'm considering not getting the capsule & just using the car seat. Have others done this & regretted not getting the capsule? If we are going out & about Bubs will be in the push chair anyway so figured it was an extra cost I can avoid  ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

I was thinking the same thing this time around...just bypassing the capsule all together.
Especially since I wont have a snap n go as I will have Isabelle to deal with .. so I figure bubs is going to have to go in a sling or a pram anyway. The only thing I'd suggest is checking that the carseat fits ok the way it needs to in the car for a NB because we got caught out BEAUTIFULLY!  
We bought a carseat for NB up, with safety features up the wazoo and we've used it for niece/nephew and friend kidlets for about 3 years no hassle at all ... except for when we tried to put it in the back seat of the car, rear facing, reclining for a NB a few weeks ago and it was too blardy big! We found Issys carseat in recline position fit better than her capsule (as the capsule handle had to be in front) it would have been fine if we could leave the handle in the up position lol
We went without a front seat until she went into a carseat (so about 6 months)

We had a capsule for both babies and I have to say that it is VERY useful for #2. It was great for when I was out and about with Amy as she is a runner so I could just pop Sophie down on the pavement whilst I caught Amy .
The most useful thing was when I was picking Amy up form creche - it didn't matter if Sophie had gone to sleep in the car as taking the capsule in & out didn't usually wake her. When we gave it back to plunket it was a real pain for creche times as she was too little to sit and it was too busy to pop her on the floor at that stage - too many toddlers who *love* babies!! -------------

Oh, hadn't thought of that thanks Jaycee. Michaela starts kindy in the new year *cries again at the thought of my baby growing up* and I have great plans to walk down to drop her off and pick her up but since I'm having a winter baby that may not always work out so well. -------------

I have a big car so the space shouldn't be the issue, only pain will be that the seat will have to go in the middle where the anchor is.
I won't often be out & about with my DD & bub because she is starting school, plus handly for me if we are out she'll be wanting to push the pram at her age. Am definitely looking at getting a sling instead of the capsule. I just remember how heavy & awkward the capsule was last time. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

I've only got the one bubs but never bothered with a capsule as I just couldn't see why I should when a covertable seat does from new born. I haven't regretted the decision at all. Baby gets used to being picked up out of his carseat and put into his pushchair and there isn't a problem. He will sleep through the shift too now that he has started sleep in car and pushchair. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| I'm debating this as well. We have 2 carseats (got the other with a voucher than had to be used up and its been great having one in each vehicle. We were just planning on using the car seat as we didnt really use the capsule much with Tom.....BUT....it costs bugger all to hire a capsule and I wonder if it might be worth it as we still have all of Tom's activities to go to and it might be easier to pick up a capsule and a hold a toddlers hand than a baby and a toddler. But I hadnt thought of the sling idea....I like that. My other thought was to take bubs out of carseat and into carry cot that we had with Tom's carseat and then carry that in. I dont like the idea of babies spending ages sleeping in capsule. I found the capsule heavy last time. |

Oo me me! We did this with our boy. He went straight into a safe and sound convertible carseat. Mainly because of the $$ thing and also cos I'd had experience having to lug a capsule around when I was nannying and it was flippin heavy and such a difficult shape to carry.
It was actually really easy to take my boy out of his carseat and just carry him in to places, then he'd either be on my lap/chest or on the floor on a flat cloth nappy. He transferred well when sleeping and still does. We just went straight to the convertible car seat from birth.
I had lots of people telling me that I would regret it because it is easier to get them in and out of the car as newborns and how it would wake her everytime etc etc. Anyway, I don't regret it at all. It never caused us any hassles and I am totally against letting babies sleep in capsules for extended periods of time anyway. It always made me feel better knowing that she was in the safest seat available from birth, and man she looked comfy in there! We bought a capsule with Spencer instead of hiring and so will use it this time too. I found it really handy and Spencer was such a tiddler that we didn't need to buy a carseat until he was 10 months.
I did like the ease of being able to take him into peoples houses or cafes or the supermarket still in the capsule, even when not asleep it acts like a little recliner chair for them and I think it will be much handier this time when I will probably have my hands full with Spencer and might not be able to have baby sleep on me. -------------

I  my capsule. I never had one with Maya and I always said I would never do that again - she hated the car from day one and I think half the reason was because she had to get woken up/disturbed to put her in and then again to take her out.
I didn't think I'd use it as much with lil miss, I planned to have her in a sling and the gremlins in the buggy but for quick trips and things like doctors appts where the gremlins don't need the buggy it is so easy to just snap the capsule into the wheels and bring her along without her waking up. And if she goes to sleep in the car I can bring it in and put it in her cot. I swaddle her and cover the capsule with a blanket when she's sleeping in it and she happily alternates between the capsule and the cot for her sleeps without any dramas. I know there is research to suggest it's not great for them to sleep in them for long periods of time but when she was in Starship she slept in it for 3 days and 5 days respectively coz she refused to sleep in the cot there and the doctors had no issue with it. We have a proper carseat for her but we haven't put her in it yet, at 5 mths she's only 6.5kg and 62cm long so easily fits the height/weight restrictions. She is heavy to carry in it but the snap and go wheels are great. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I personally sugesst the capsule too. I was planning on just putting bubba #3 in in the safe'nsound how ever she was only a little 6 pounder so i got one off trade me a week after she was born. And plus if you hire it its a second car seat if you need it. maybe if you are a 2 car family. ------------- Deborah Mum to:

I love our capsule too - it fits onto our pram and DD is still in it at 11 months as it has a 13kg weight limit. We'll keep using it until we go forward facing in a month or two.
As some of the others have said, I think it will be even more useful when #2 comes along and you have a toddler to keep an eye on! |

I would say carseat from NB, then sling/front pack or pram for excursions not needing car.
In my experience the capsule is no good for both you & babies backs, having to bend & lift unnecessarily. Yea it is convenient to have a capsule & be able to carry it around & pop it down etc however the recline inside capsule isn't natural & therefore having baby in capsule too long could be bad for their back muscles. I also don't like the thought of leaving my baby in the capsule, on the ground, in a public place & would never put capsule on high surface anyway. I skipped the capsule for two of my babies. While I do find it more convenient, I don't think they are worth purchase price. however if you are out and about a lot in situations where you would like to carry (or snap n go perhaps?) the capsule, I'd look at hiring from Plunket as they don't cost much that way. If you have tall babies, I'd skip it altogether. ------------- |

I found it okay, as far as taking her in and out of the car - although it probably depends on how often you get out and about, I probably didn't go out that much in the early days. The only time I really wished I had a capsule was when we went to a cafe for coffee group (although we usually went to someone's house so this wasn't really much of a problem) - but to get around this I bought a P&T cocoon to put her in (which is much lighter than a capsule). At the time, I thought, I'm definitely getting a capsule and some snap and go wheels for the next baby - but now I don't know, they're only newborn for such a short time and she would have outgrown her capsule by now, as she's quite tall and my arm muscles are pathetic! |

I think you are all convincing me to forget the capsule idea and just stick with the carseat (which we already have). The only time I found a capsule handy (and why we hired one after Tom was born) was for flying up to grandparents. But then we also used our convertible once and that worked too...just bulkier.
If I dont have a capsule then I will be more inclined to use the buggy and walk....gotta be a good thing. |

Just my two cents, we have a convertable carseat, I always figured that if I wanted a capsule after baby was born I could always hire one, you will need the car seat at some point anyway. I think I'm pretty convinced now to skip the capsule and go straight for a carseat. I've had a look and seen some great ones that go from birth to 36kgs so is basically suitable for as long as this baby needs to be in a carseat. Great idea about using the cocoon anakk, we're intending to get a pram with a basinette/carry cot anyway so we can use that at church/friends places/cafes if need be. -------------
