Subject: how did you chose your childs name ?

this thread is completly out of curiosity , one thing I have noticed since being on here , is that our children all have names
What interests me , is how you chose them , how you decided THAT was the name for your little darling (s)
With C , I closed my eyes , opened a name book and ran my finger down the page (risky business, that , and yes ,I did it a few times)
This one, DF came up with a boys name, after a character in a movie he likes, and I always liked the girls name we picked.
But I know some people name their children or babies to be, after family members, or friends, some after people they greatly admire (eg Emma, with Maya) , or movie stars , book characters etc...
so, is there a story behind your child's name? go on , tell!

Rico: DH thought of it from "Puerto Rico". Strange huh! This was when we had not long being going out, and I have no idea what he was thinking, but mentioned it one day. We hadn't considered marriage, nor having children together, but Rico always stood out, and no other name was going to come into consideration.
Gia: Not long before I fell pg with Rico, we were watching an old Italian war movie with a young girl in it, called Gia. The mother, a local, slept with 3 american soldiers and she told each one of them that they were the father of her daughter "Gia" and when they all were sending her money to raise the child! Until they all came back to her town years and years later so she had to try and work it so they didn't all come to see Gia at the same time. DH said after the movie when we had a girl, her name would be Gia.
Jett: No particular story with that name, Dh just suggested it when I was only a few months pg with Jett, and I liked it, then loved it! I couldn't stand the rest of his suggestions, and he didn't like any of mine.

Jake's is from the Blues Brothers and taine is from Taine randall. who neither of us actually like, but we liked the name. Boys names we always had trouble with - as in we only liked about three. Girls we liked HEAPS but Lewis vetoed a lot. apparently lots of bitchy girls called Holly in Gisborne

Hannah was a name that DH and I both really loved.
Every Hannah we'd ever known was really lovely.
Once she was born I found out Hannah was the name of both of my great-great grandmothers and was my Grandma's favourite name.
So it was meant to be.

Nope, we just kept going through names until we came up with something we both liked.
One of the best ways we found to come up with names is to read the credits of any programme.
Spencer's middle name is Richard after his daddy though and Dh was named after his Granddad so that is kinda keeping a family name going. This baby however just has a random middle name as we came up with two names that we liked. Now we just have to decide which order to put them in

Keira we came up with when I was about 5 months pregnant, we still hadnt found a name we agreed on and then one day while watching Pirates of the Carribean we both fell in love with the name Keira. Not that shes exactly named after Keira Knightley, we just both like the name.
Her Middle name Rose is my mums name.
Maddis name was not so easy, I guess we were hoping the name would just come to us. We had many lists of names we liked and neither of us could agree on the same name. I think Madison was the only name we could agree on and quickly it became her. I love the name, just sometimes wish it wernt so common.

I love knowing how people picked there names!
DH wouldn't disucss names at all, and when he did it was terrible names just to annoy me. I went for monitoring on the Thursday and was told I would be induced the next day - I paniced as still no name. We agreed on a girls name but no boys name and as I was 100% sure it was a boy this wasn't helpful.
Went thru labour etc and when he was out DH suggested Frano (nice name but we are really white and not sure its a white name IYGWIM) and then kept going with more and more terrible names, I was determined to get my way so sent him home to work out a name that I could call my son Mac with and he came back with Macauley - apparently he was up until 3.30am trying to find one that he liked. Middle name is a family name.

DH and I had been discussing baby names since long before we were engaged let alone married and thinking about TTC. We have lots of boys names we like and a few girls names we like too but we couldn't agree on any and then one day DH suggested Michaela for a girl and I totally fell in love with it.
Her middle name is Elizabeth named after my niece who lived with us for awhile, Elizabeth (my niece) was named after my sisters and I (Elizabeth is my oldest sisters middle name) and my mum came up with the middle name Elizabeth for my sister because it was the name of her favourite childhood doll. So I suppose we're creating a bit of a family tradition now.
We still can't agree on a boys name.

Addison I was getting desperate and posted a thread on here and someone suggested it. At that stage I didnt even know about Greys Anatomy but in the list someone posted it caught my eye and I rang hubby and he loved it too and that was that.
Both have middle names after family members

With Ethan I got it suggested to me at work the same day DH thought of it out of the blue so it was fate:)! Daniel he didn't like but I love and it went with Ethan so that sorted that:)
With this one (yes we are sad and already have names) we just both really liked the girls name and the boys name is one I loved last time and it's grown on DH:)

DH and I have had our girls name sorted out since before we even decided to try for a baby! We were singing along to the radio one day in the car and both said "I love that name" about the name in the song. We couldn't agree on boys names at all so lucky we're having a girl Her middle name is most likely going to be DH's Nana's name, she passed away the day before I found out I was pregnant.

DH actually suggested Charlotte for her first name - we both wanted something very strong and that had been used throughout history. I was also 100% adamant that I wanted a name that I could buy things for (ie a comb with Charlotte on it) and that the spelling was correct.
Initally her middle name was going to be Rose as its my middle name, my Mum's middle name and my great aunties first name. About 4 weeks before she was born I heard of a little girl called Emily Rose and decided I loved the way it ran together. However, I was a little more relaxed on the spelling and decided to spell it Emalee-Rose. The hyphen is also part of her birth cert.
When we have another, if its a girl, their name will also be "something something-rose Beasley". But that may be some time off yet
If its a boy it will be "something Stewart Beasley". DH wants the middle name to be Colin after his late grandfather but I HATE it so we compromised and used Stewart which was his grandfathers surname. I still am not keen on it but its better than Colin.

We chose Samantha after we had the 20 week scan and found out she was a girl. We had loads of boys names already chosen (his family all has tons of boys!).
We just both wanted a name that could be shortened ie Sam, and was girly, but no too girly IFKWIM. DH actually chose her first name in the end, but we both loved it. And by the time she was born (after being Samantha for nearly 5 months already) she couldn't possibly be named anything else.
Plus as an extra bonus - Samantha means: she who obeys - yeah right!!!
Her middle name is Rosalie, after my Mom, who she will never get to meet, but who would have been the most awesome Nanna in the world. It was important to me that she feels a connection with her Nanna.
Edited to add: Like CuriousG, it was important to me that Sam had a name that wasn't too hard to read etc. I found it quite challenging growing up with a name that no one could pronounce, although I do love my name.

We always had trouble with boy names.....Our first i don't know how we came up with Lachlan or Lachie...i think we just went through and said lots of names out lound and this was the only boy name we liked....If a girl we had three to choose from. If he was a boy the middle name would come from my side and if it was a girl it would come from DH's side but as soon as we found out that he was a boy DH packed a sad and stamped his foot and said it was not fair So we have Edward from my side and william from his....Later finding out that we both have great grandparents called Edward William and William Edward...lol
Sophia got her name from Lachlan actually. his fav song was Sophia by The Rasmus so he wanted to call her that and we loved it so if it was an girl Sophia and if it was a boy...Superman (Lachies choise)...Lucky we had a girl. We actually Did not have any boy names in mind. He middle names acame from DH's mums middle name and frome my Aunty. If we gave one two middle names we had to do the same for the other or they will feel as though we do not love them as muc h

When I was pregnant with my daughter we came up with a whole bunch of names (boy & girl names, we didn't know what we were having), in the end we didn't use any of the names we had picked.
Marissa Amélie: after 4 days of being "Baby Girl" we came up with Marissa, which means Of the Sea. we thought it was a pretty name. We were living in Montréal, Canada when she was conceived so we wanted a French middle name for her, hence Amélie.
Graeson Tahi: we had narrowed it down to two names for our son and let our daughter choose her favourite, so she actually named her brother. It is pronounced Gray-son, for his middle name we wanted a name to help represent him being born in NZ which is why we chose Tahi.
edited for my bad one-handed typing, feeding Grae. heehee

I haven't read the responses cause I'm feeling lazy after sitting in the sun so I'll ahve to come back and be nosey..
For us we wrote down 10 names and put them in a bowl and picked them out one at a time and discussed it. If I hated the name I fed it to the dog lol, we ended up coming down to 3 names we liked. But ended up going with none of them but for another name we both chose but I went off it which was why it wasn't in our original top 3... we will probably do something similar this time around too. Hopefully it won't be a boy because boys names are hard!

For us Jack was the only name we both agreed on and we still didn't agree (I wanted Jackson) until he was a few days old. His middle name Keith is my Dads name.
Capreces camewhile we were watching Mitre 10 dream home, one of the couples had a daughter called Caprice and Ben loved it (His favourite car is a Statesman Caprice). He refused to even cosider any other name and then i looked up the meaning and found it was Italian and since i'm part Italian I agreed. I changed the spelling so she wouldn't be directly named after a car. Her middle name Michelle is my Mums middle name.

Joshua I just liked - and since I was a single mum to be only had myself to argue about it with - i was always going the have Blade eiher his first or middle name but people pointed out Blade was a name he would have to live up to ..... He got it as a middle name.
Brooke was named after a character off melrose place whom her father thought was hot LOL.... and dakota her middle name I always liked
Rhyley - after discussing many names we like Riley but didn't want that spelling - and yes we have set him up to never find a comb or ruler in his name LOL... BUT i have a very plain name and could never get one either!! So we mixed a few different spellings of Riley and came up with RHYLEY which we love... as for Ashton than was my second choice name and Joseph is after Rhyley's great grandad who was a lovely gentle man and a great grandad and war hero so I wanted to have joseph in his name (I wanted Joe as a first name but Dh said No)
I do hope we have a girl next cause I would be so stuck for a boys name finding Rhyley's was hard enough.

DH named Ella. We had so many names that we agreed on and then went off throughout the duration of my pregnancy but he came home one day with the name Ella and was really, really stuck on it.
It was the most popular girl's name in NZ the year she was born and I wasn't too keen on a name that was so common but when he actually pleaded with me after she was born, I didn't have the heart to argue.
Her middle name is Jasmine, a name we both love but didn't want to use as a first name as we have a close friend with the same name and her Chinese name is Mei Lin which means beautiful lotus and is a nod to her Chinese great-grandmother. Her grandmother gave it to her which makes it quite special.
Benjamin was the name we chose for a boy when we were expecting Ella. Just a name we both really liked and the only boys name we both liked.
It was a toss up between Tyler and Benjamin, I actually liked Tyler better when he was born but DH preferred Benjamin and he really did look more like a Benjamin.
Tyler is his middle name and his Chinese name is Siu Fu which means little tiger. Apparently it is quite an odd name by Chinese standards but it really suits Benjy and we love Bruce Lee whose Chinese name means little dragon

As yet we have not children but already have names.
DH and I both like british names.
If we have a son he'll be James its a name DH suggested and I like, I also like Jamie and like the scottish connection.
If we have a daughter she will be Catherine Sheryl - Catherine cause I've always liked the name and the people with that name seem to be strong, intelligent and beautiful women, and Sheyl after my mum who wont get to meet her grand children.
I was named after a character in a movie, and Maree is a very common catholic middle name.

We don't have kids yet, but have decided on Max Walker for a boy....Max because we both like it, it's simple and strong, and Walker because it's a family name from DF's side. I also like Harry (another family name on DF's side) but DF isn't so keen...
For a girl though......we can't decide on ANYTHING. It has to be simple and preferably not be able to be shortened...and the middle name will be Elizabeth (family name on my side, including my middle name). We did think of Amy, but it's too close to a girl I went to school with, who had a similar sounding surname. Because we will have a surname that will have to be spelled out, simple first names are always going to be best!!

Rowan was named after my favourite book - The Rowan.
I've wanted to call my daughter that since I was a teenager and luckily DH loved it too.
Her middle name was originally going to be Alexis but since she was born one week out from Christmas we changed it to Noelle. And for a bit of randomness I have since found out that Katie Holmes' (Mrs Tom Cruise) middle name is Noelle and her birthday is also the 18th of Dec - ooo spooky
We already have our next girls name too so we will be a bit stuffed if it's a boy. (when we actually get pregnant lol!)

Boring story here, but I'm rather glad that I only had Me, myself & I to argue with when it came to choosing a name. My parents had their input, to an extent ...not that it really made much difference ha!
I always loved the names Joshua & Luke, DS was originally going to be called Joshua Luke (both biblical names), but after much rethinking and not wanting him to have what was considered one of the most popular names for that year (joshua and luke were both in the top 10) i decided on Lucas (after watching an episode of home & away and it dawning on me that i actually preferred Lucas to luke) ...so he was Lucas Joshua Grant (grant after my cousin whom passed tragically a few months before I fell pregnant). Bit of a mouthful but im happy with it.
BTW I LOVE the name Addison, would definitely be near the top of my list for girls names, along with Alexis.
If Lucas had of been a girl he would have been named Theresa Grace (after Mother Theresa, Chosen Saint for my First Communion, and after my Nana's Sister), and Grace because I think that name is beautiful for a girl, and ties in perfectly with Theresa IMO.

When my DH and I first got together I asked him if he were to have anymore children which names would he choose and some of them were really random, but Keziah really stood out from them and it kind of stuck so I couldn't imagine her with another name LOL and Leiandra I stole from a member on another forum but changed the spelling a little so I was directly 'stealing' it IYKWIM? If she was a boy, she would have been Corbyn Nathaniel
For this one we're still trying to come up with a list.. might use some of the names we had before, but we're still not sure which route we want to follow

DH had picked Alia's name long before I was on the scene & because we were so sure that she was going to be a boy I was quite happy to let him have that pick! Her name came from the movie Dune which DH really likes. Her middle name is Jane, which is my middle name, plus I knew it would annoy my MIL
This time around we had been trying to pick a scottish boy's name from my family tree, but there weren't any interesting ones! So we gave up on that idea & I text DH one day & said I can't come up with a name, as it was my job this time around, he texted back how about Cooper, I thought about it & I liked it. Then a few weeks later, he said are you sure about Cooper & I said too late it's stuck now!!
Alexander is DH's middle name & his Dad's middle name, plus is also on my side of the family as well.

We talked about what we wanted in a name and came up with a list of dos and dont's. So, nothing for a girl that sounds like a boys name, nothing that's in the most popular lists (much as we like some of them) etc. and nothing to 'way out there' or made-up-American sounding.
Then we went on name websites, read names off magazine articles and TV credits - anywhere really, but I think the names we have picked came up really early on - I 've always loved the girls name and DH did too, and the boys name has a bit of family history to it.

umm well dh came up with Ryan because all the names we picked were then taken by someone else or they made us thnk of someone we didnt like. Oh and william is his middle name coz its his dh's my dad's and my brothers middle name also dhs cousin and his uncles middle name.
i ahave my girls name all picked out already just need a girl.
but we had lists and lists of names like issac and jakab really biblical but ended up with one not so much. also if i really love a movie or a character ill probablly like the name, "the notebook" dude Noah which i loved then dh said do you 'Noah william' which peeved me of so he then said his names ryan in "real " life. so that the wayit is.

When I was pregnant with Janaya the mitre 10 dream home was screening, and there was a lady on there called "GENEA" I asked DH if he liked it and he said no, because he knew a girl named "Janaya" from school and he didnt really like her. DH was allowed to choose her name due to a bet we had, and when she was born he said "How about Janaya Rose?" I said "Sure, I had suggested that weeks ago!" "Hmm, no you didnt" We still argue about that.
And Jackson, well, DH liked Jack, I thought it sounded weird with our last name. So we settled for Jackson, as it was the only name we sort of both agreed on.

Spirals, sounds like we have similar taste. We had several girls' names on the list but really struggled with boys' names. We ended up on a shortlist of 3 but in the end chose Jeremy because my midwife asked about names when I was in labour and she said that was the least common of the 3, going on her recent deliveries. (The others were Oscar - which he nearly was because he came out very grouchy! - and Isaac.) His middle name, John, is a family thing. On DH's side the first born son always has John as a middle name, plus it's my Dad's name, my step-grandfather's name, plus we both have/had an Uncle John. So we knew the middle name for ages and the first name had to go with that.
We had several constraints though. No 'surnames as first names'. Nothing too obscure or recently invented. Nothing top 10. Nothing unisex.
Also, names had to work with our surname, which is Dutch and starts with O. That means several points:
- Nothing too obviously ethnic, of any description. Some of the Gaelic names just seem like a mishmash of cultures when mixed with a Dutch surname, and a Dutch name just seems too, well, Dutch.
- Initials have to be classroom taunt proof. So no names starting with B, F, H, or P (a bummer cos I always thought I would have a Benjamin, I've never met a Ben I didn't like). While on the initials line, we joked to nosy family members when they asked that we quite liked the three middle names approach, maybe 'Edward Ian Ewen Ivan' (EIEIO ).
- Final sounds of the names are important as well. With a surname that starts with a vowel sound, there are several names that just don't roll off the tongue.
I'm with everybody that's said girl names are easier than boys! If JJ was a girl he would have been Leah, but I'm not telling my second choice name because I'm saving it for if I ever have a girl. It's really old fashioned and unusual (it was my grandmother's middle name) but I think it's cool, and I'll be gutted if it suddenly comes back into fashion before I get to use it. Leah is a "big sister" kinda name IYKWIM so it's off the list now.
Knowing my luck I'll end up with 4 boys, in which case DH will just have to name them!

The middle name was a bit harder I want fallon but we ended up going with terina because of family stuff.
I liked courtney, bridget, savannah, summer.... DF hated them all lol I like Connor and Jayden, Brooklyn for boys.... surprise surprise DF hates all of those too lol.

We both loved the name Isaac so our first baby was easy - and he has 2 middle names after each of our grandfathers.
Ethan was named when DH said 'how about Ethan' after he was born!! We had decided we were having a girl and only had a girls name picked but Ethan was one that we both liked.
This time around, DH has said that I can name baby if its a girl and he can name it if it's a boy... I've agreed but will only agree if I like the name he chooses if it is a boy
------------- Isaac is 6, Ethan is 4, Rico is 2 and Hunter is almost 1!

We had a girls name leading up to our 20week scan walking in I said laugh if it was a boy....and voila lol!
It took us a while but whilest playing American football my husband saw a name Tyrelle....we like it but being french that is the feminine way so we changed it to Tyrell.
We still like the girls name and hope to 1 day use it

Spirals, sounds like we have similar taste.

Yes, it does. Although certainly sounds your like your choices were a lot tougher than mine.
I can't help wondering now if my girls name is the same as your girls name. Cos mine is quite old fashioned, not very popular (at the moment) and I think it's beautiful.
Lots of the 'old' names are back in at the moment - but I haven't heard this one anywhere.

Eva was a name both DH and I loved and Hannah was my DH's grandmother's name.
We haven't made a definite decision on a name for this little one but I found this quite trippy as my DH texted me a couple of months ago with the suggestion Cooper Alexander!!
Aliasmum wrote:
So we gave up on that idea & I text DH one day & said I can't come up with a name, as it was my job this time around, he texted back how about Cooper, I thought about it & I liked it. Then a few weeks later, he said are you sure about Cooper & I said too late it's stuck now!!
Alexander is DH's middle name & his Dad's middle name, plus is also on my side of the family as well. |

Our story's fairly straightforward. DH didn't like most of the names I suggested, but he did like Amelie (which comes from one of our favourite movies). So tada!
Her middle name is Therese, after the saint - it's my sister's middle name and my mother's and my confirmation name. She would have had my middle name (also my mothers!), which is my Grandma's first name (Marie, but pronounced MAH-ree) but it didn't flow. Whew, gotta love family names! Of course the two we went with means she ended up with a completely French name.
Boys... we're thinking Alexander if it should ever happen, and DH gets to pick the middle name from his side of the family. He's settled on Nicholas after his father.

Have you got a cuppa coz this could take a while ...
Maya Grace Te Irirangi Marama - Maya after my favourite poet, Maya Angelou. I had made a list of names I liked but then one day it randomly jumped out at me from one of her books on my bedside table (Maya was on the original list but spelt differently). Grace coz I liked it, considered it for a first name but it's too common and reminded me too much of Once Were Warriors. Willie picked her Maori name, Te Irirangi Marama, which means the place where heaven and earth meet/the horizon.
Sienna Marie Anahera Jayde - I agonised over Sienna coz I really, really liked the name and had done for ages but I had a friend who said she was saving it for her next daughter. In the end I just couldn't think of her as anything except Sienna, my friend stopped speaking to me (I should add that she had no partner and wasn't pregnant or planning to be at the time, and I never said she *couldn't* use it!) but I'm glad I stuck with it coz it sits her. Marie is a family name - my mum's middle name is Mary, my sister's middle name is Marie and Willie's sister's name is Marie. Anahera is Maori for angel in honour of the baby we lost just before we had them. Jayde I just liked, and I wanted them to have 4 names the same as Maya.
Mercedes Kailah Waimarie Faith - I was in Oz when I had the scan where we found out they were both girls (17 weeks) and when I rang him to tell him he said he already had a name for the bigger baby. I had no intentions of letting him name either of them (he named his first daughter Mona-lisa, 'nuff said! ) but he was hell bent on Mercedes coz he drives a Mercedes truck, and it grew on me. It totally suits her too! My mum picked Kailah. She didn't like Mercedes and kept desperately getting us to change our mind and one day she rang to say they had been out for breakfast and the waitress that served them was called Kailah. I really liked it so it became her middle name. Waimarie means peaceful waters, even tho there's nothing peaceful about my little fireball, and I just liked Faith, altho I later found out it was my grandmother's stepmother's name and my grandmother hated her stepmother lol so if I'd known that I might not have chosen it.
Chiara Louise Chloe Ngaroma - Chiara was the other name I contemplated with Sienna so from day one if she was a girl she was going to be Chiara. Louise is my middle name and Willie's is Louis so it kind of links back to both of us. We told Maya she could pick a name and she picked Chloe, either after the Bratz doll or Carmella's baby in Neighbours, I'm not 100% sure which, but I liked it and it flowed with her other names. We didn't pick her Maori name till after she was born, Willie couldn't decide on one, then I suggested Ngaroma which is his closest sister's name and he agreed.
See, told you it was a novel!
If we'd had a boy he would have been Luca Shakur Wiremu John - Luca coz I like it, Shakur after Tupac Shakur, Wiremu after Willie and John is a thru and thru family name (my brother, my uncle, my grandfather...). The freaky thing I later discovered is that Luca is Spanish for light, and Chiara is Italian for light so boy or girl our baby's name would have meant the same thing!

It's really interesting reading the different ways baby's get their names!
Mikayla's name was chosen 17 years ago when my brother died in a car accident. I had planned to spell it Michaela, but DH couldn't spell it & we wanted to shorten it to Kayla. Breann is Brendan & Ann together, my workmate Brendan was killed in a hit & run 2 weeks before M was born, and Ann as it is both our Mum's middle names (both still alive, so not all doom & gloom ). She was going to be Michaela Ann, but was 5 days late, and we got bored and started playing when I found out DH couldn't spell it, and Breann sounds so much better than Ann!
If she was a boy she was going to be Ronan Noel (both my Dad & brother's middle names) and Ronan 'cause DH chose it and I wouldn't budge on Mikayla, so he got to choose the boy's name.

Wow how funny is that!!! It goes well together though....
I should add what Coopers initials will be C.A.R very suitable for a little boy & we were a bit stuck as most initials would spell a word. I had orginially wanted William as the first name but the initals would have been WAR & I though with William the Conquerer & Alexander the Great, I was playing with fire so we put that in the No pile!

Ive enjoyed all the naming stories
My two both have unusual names- My name is Gloria so I really wanted to stay away from biblical or old fashioned names after all the tourcher I got at school over my name LOL
Brae Yule got his name at 20wks gest (when we found out he was a boy) Brae is a scottish name meaning hill & DP's family orginates from scotland. We choose it because my preggy tummy was the size of a hill LOL (I got the "are you having twins" when i was 3-4mnths preggy & the " oh my god is your baby due any day now?" at 5-6mnths) so it fitted well Yule is DPs dec. grandmas maiden name, she paseed away 1 mnth before Brae was born & Brae would of been her first great gkid. I said to DP after the funeral that Yule was going to be his middle name & funnily it also reminds me of Xmas- as in yuletide. Brae was overdue & born on xmas eve 04
Kalyx Angelo is a bit more random. Also named at 20wks gest. Calyx is a botany term, where the bud meets the stem, or something rather. I Love it. I adjusted the spelling so it wasnt so girly & his intials wouldnt spell CAR But KAR instead LOL Angelo is after my dec. mother, her name was Angela she passed away a year before he was born

This is a great thread, I will have to find it again for when we need a name for #2.
We Have Jody Nena.
Nena is my grandmother's name.
Jody I just randomly thought of one day when I was lying in bed in the nursery several days over due.
It was the only name both DH and I liked instantly after 9 months of trying to find one.
We were having a surprise so our boy's name was going to be Tobias Stephen.
I liked Tobias for years (DH not so keen but I had decided and that was that ).
Stephen is my father's name.

it IS a great thread (says the one who started it)
but seriously , I love reading about the different ways names are chosen .
Caitlyn I got by running my finger down a name book with my eyes closed , she was the 3rd try, i wont say what the others were in case anyone has those names , but they weren't "right" for me .
I was going to call her Caitlyn Rose, but then the song Rhiannon came on the radio one day , except I didn't like Caitlyn Rhiannon, so changed it to Rhianna , THEN her dad asked if he could submit a name (we werent together but I wanted him to be involved as possible ) and he suggested Marie, which went well I thought, and its my oldest Bf's middle name, and weirdly enough, the girl he later married (who he hadnt met at this stage) her middle name is Marie, which is cool, cos C loves her .
so her name is Caitlyn Rhianna Marie
my friend (the one whos middle name is Marie) has a girl 7 months younger than C (c's best friend) and she was going to be called Leah , then the day after she was born she informs me her dropkick of an ex (sorry , but i cant stand him ) had named her Angel.
Then 3 days later she informs me that the drugs have worn off and her name is now Akeisha Leah , when i first heard it .all i could picture was women on Rikki Lake snapping their fingers and going "mmmhmmm thats right girlll" her daughter has blue eyes and light brown hair, but , now I cant picture her as anything else, it really suits her

My DD is Anyssa Charlotte.
I always liked Charlotte for a first name (Cure fan from way back ), but it was too popular. I wanted a family name for a middle name and happily found out while preg that my great Aunt who always remembers our birthday is a Patricia Charlotte, so that was great.
DP found "Nyssa" in the name book, and I thought it wasn't a full name - just sounded like an abreviation, so after a few days I thought adding an A on the front could work! Thankfully Anisa and Annissa were in the name book, so it isn't entirely made up, and I've come across another couple of Anyssas since she has been born. I also had Alyssa on my list.
Harriet was our other choice, and it wasn't until just after she was born that we knew she was absolutely an Anyssa.

DF and I wanted one that wasnt too long and something that wasnt common. We knew that he would have one of Adams names as part of his name, and thats where Alexander came from.
I found Caden on an American pregnancy forum and I loved it, and so did Adam.
So Caden Alexander Raynes was his name not long after we found out he was a boy!

DP and I discussed names before we even started TTC lol. I have Irish/Scottish heritage and used to live there so I was quite keen n Celtic names. DP loves them too so we are SO lucky we are having a girl cos we have a beautiful name picked out we both love! Boys names were harder, although before our scan yesterday we had narrowed it down to 2-3 lol.

Andrew we had big issues over as I did want Joshua if he was a boy (we had no idea till he came out), but I was working with a Josh and he knew I loved the name Josh so was getting a big head that my baby would be named after him. So after he was born we opened the name book and started at A and went through the names (at 1.30am!!!), got to Andrew and that was it. John is my dad's middle name and we wanted a "family" name and there was no way in hell I was going to use a Dutch name as a middle name as our surname is Dutch. My family in Oz want to think that we named him after Andrew John's (greatest league player at the moment).
Joshua. I got my way!!! I did give DH a chance with some of his names he wanted but he didn't suit them so I tried Joshua and it worked!!! Gareth is one of DH's middle name. My mum suggested we use Nigel's name.
If I get my way and we have number 3 and it is a girl it will probably be Sarah Lee. I love the name Sarah and Lee is my middle name, and we have a rather unusal surname that we need to have plain and simple first names.

I wanted a name that was simple and wasn't popular. One that was nice as baby.young child but also not babyish when she becomes a teenager/adult.
Ironically I couldnt think of any boys names you know ones that really stand out I mean there are plenty of boys names that I like but none that really said "thats a name I want to give my child" DH did think of one in case #1 was a boy we may still use it if #2 is a boy.
my DH';s only criteria for a name was that it wasnt one he had a bad memory or association of...for eg say there was a girl called Mary who used to call him a fat slob and pinch his lunch then he would not want to name our girl that.
Megan has the middle name Grace after my Nana who is 92 when I phoned her to tell her what we had named our daughter she felt really honoured :)
