Im just wondering when you started your baby on finger foods and what types of food.
Caden is just getitng into his solids now, we are starting to give him 3 solid meals a day now.

Im a bit worried about the whole finger foods thing! So worried about him chocking and stuff

Haha I asked the same question awhile back! My girls have been on solids since they were almost 5 months and now have 3 solid feeds a day and 4 bottles They haven't had many finger foods but over the last 2 weeks I have been giving them vegemite on toast fingers and they looooove it!
Another member suggested these to try -

At that age we were giving all sorts like:
toast
sammies
crackers
arrowroot bikkies
veges
fruit
rusks covered in vegemite
aria farm beef and lamb chips

I was really worried about them choaking as well. They do gag a bit at first but it's just them learning to swallow just keep an eye on him he'll be all good

i was the same...basically it sucks cause they have to learn but you don't want them to choke..but E just gagged a lot in the beginning...we give him Cassava vege crisps as they melt in your mouth..i used to break them up..lol:) I can't wait till he can have all that in the list above!!

Avocado fingers are good finger food to start with, especially if you can get a nice soft creamy one, then it just basically melts in their mouth (if they don't squish it all up in their hands first LOL)

We have found bread sticks really good.
Other than that I tend to give Emma all finger food (banana, avocado etc) in those baby feeders as she did choke once and gave me such a fright

Vegemite/Marmite toast fingers are a good one to start with.. but make sure to take the crusts off until he gets some teeth to power through them

Cruskets are good as they dissolve and go REALLY gooey on saliva contact LOL eww not nice to pick up when they've been gummed to death

Arrowroot biscuits

Avocado

And of course Rusks

Cool thanks, so did you start them on those foods at 7 months or older?
It makes me nervous when he has a rusk as he really has a go at them! lol

Keziah started on finger foods at about 7 months.. and like Caden she really tried to get thru rusks... sometimes only to make them really soggy LOL but after a while her first teeth cut and she was away laughing It's really amazing to watch them trying new things (textures and flavours) and don't worry too much if he gags a bit.... they have a really good gag reflex I have found lol

I started C on finger foods from 7 months, I didnt want to rush her (different for every baby I know, some are ready for finger foods before )
she loved vegemite on toast best , and actually, after reading this thread, i have a sudden craving for vegemite toast fingers

Maya was having finger foods from 5 months, she started solids at 16 weeks. She loved big chunks of banana and toast fingers to start with then we gradually moved to a wider range of stuff. By 9 mths she was having raisins, crackers, those Mother Earth fruit sticks etc.

Gremlins were probably about 6 mths when they started finger foods, I did it in a similar way to Maya.

Lil miss hasn't started solids yet but I did give her a chunk of cooked potato to chew on the other day and she sucked it and gummed it.

Levi started on solids at 4 months but took ages before he could handle finger foods. He was nearly a year old before he got the hang of it. He used to gag and then vomit with anything slightly lumpy. Even now he cant handle meat very well and still has his veges mashed. I guess every child is different and do things in their own time.

Some girls from my coffee group gave their babies finger food from the start instead of pureed food...I think it is called 'baby led weening'. They do gag at the start, but they soon get used to it.   I did a combination with my boy. The gagging is sort of scary, but he has never choked. I don't do up the straps in his high chair though...just in case I do need to get him out quickly to stop him choking.

Dried bananas are quite a good finger food. They don't fall apart and my boy found them more satisfying (tasty) than rusks. Also, homemade rusks are a really good option. Just cut off the crusts of some bread and roll it up and microwave it for about two lots of 30 secs. You can put marmite on them or leave them plain.

Oh thats a neat idea about the home made rusks! I will give that a go!
I might start offering him roasted vegies sticks etc at 7 months and see how we go, he REALLY watches us when we eat now and he tries to grab whatever Im having and put it in his mouth, he also watches me drink out of my pump bottle and grabs it off me and puts it in his mouth lol, smart cookie!

That's one of the signs that he's ready for finger foods Sheza..ie Grabbing or eying up what your eating

Keziah loves cooked bits of Brocolli now and even managed to snag a raw piece of stalk the other day and tried to num num it up but couldn't manage it with only 6 teeth because it kept going to the back and that caused HUGE drools LOL
