Am I the only one that thinks that 3 News should have been a bit more sensitive on what they showed from the footage the camera man took? I just think showing the family in that state was a bit rough. Those poor people. I can't think of anything worse....

Yep, ditto. I have been really unimpressed by TV3 recently. They also showed pics of the motorbike crash on Banks Peninsula where the bodies were still visible, probably at a time when the families were literally just being told. Not cool at all - do we really need to see that? I don't.

I just watched it on their website, they should have definitely cut some bits out, it was too personal their grief to be shown to the whole world

I agree . Some more sensitivity , would be nice .
Yes, its news, however for the family their whole world has just been turned upside down and wont ever be the same
Gah ,media !
I hope they back off Sonny's family , and give them some space to grieve the loss of their beloved one

I just thought the same thing! I hadn't had a chance to read the paper today so jumped online and one of the links I thought was the news story snippet from the news was actually pictures and it was of the family & girlfriend consoling eachother - poor things, they don't need the media in their face at such a private moment.

I haven't watched it as I am not a fan of TV3 news but I was disgusted with how they were showing the body of the woman found dead in the Avon river a few weeks back.

I don't watch TV3 news because they are like that. But I do have to watch their weather now because TV1 took of Waiouru's temp and I want to know how hot or cold it is here.
And also while we are on TV3 what is up with their weather girl

We have a giggle everynight when she is doing the weather at the moment lol. So mean but so funny.
I guess the part that got me was when one of the family members collapsed and another member caught him and held him on the ground. It was way past the point. Far too personal for my liking. They haven't even found his body yet!

both news channels are as bad as each other. We, the public, DO NOT need to see body bags. I was really appalled when the canyoning tragedyhappened, they kept showing them lifting body bags into the helicopter. and even that woman who held up the vodafone store and was shot by police - they showed her foot lying in the store - now, she did a dumb thing, but she also had a family out there who was probably devastated by her death.
the media is just going too far and we don't watch the news anymore because of it. I can get all I need from the internet now and chose what to look at. Mainly cause I don't think the kids need exposing to all that just yet. And jake is suddenly quite curious about things - questions are becoming difficult

I like to know what's going on but I have to agree with you Lizzle re the body bags. Usually it wouldn't really bother my but i'm finding it very hard to deal with things like that at the moment.
I got really upset when I saw the footage of the family in such distress when they couldn't find him. And the reporters kept saying how the camera man had no idea what he was shooting. How could he not have? People were screaming and yelling, crying and that poor woman praying on the rocks.....The then helicopter turns up for the search, and you're telling me he didn't know what was happening? He may not have known who it was but even an idiot could have worked out someone was missing.

They may have asked the family for their permission before showing those images. I felt that they were strong and showed the intense grief that those poor people were going through... I don't think they would have shown them without gaining permission first, and if they did go ahead without permission well that takes a different spin on things and yes they should be ashamed.
I just want him found, regardless of what the news reports.

I agree Mel that permission should be sought. I thought the same thing but then realised that when the piece aired, they were still looking for him. I didn't think the family would have been that interested in that sort of thing at that time. Someone might want to correct me here but isn't footage taken in a public place able to be aired without permission or something like that????
I just sent an email to TV3 cause this really disturbed me. Probably me just being hormonal but I really think the media needs to be reminded every now and again that the may be responsible for keeping the public up to date, but they need to remember that they need to be socially responsible and compassionate towards people and families who are grieving.

you don't have to ask permission because it "is in the public interest" - apparently

Can't say I thought watching those people go through hell was in anyones best interests to tell you the truth.
This is what I sent to TV3. I know it wont do anything but it made me feel better lol.
To whom it may concern;
It has become clear that many people like myself, are very upset at the lack of compassion that TV3 news has shown to the family of Sonny Fai at the time of his drowning at Bethells Beach.
I watch the news to keep up to date with the current national and international news but find it upsetting and unnecessary to watch a family's grief aired on public television.
I understand that the responsibility of the media is to keep the public informed, but I believe that the footage showed was a serious invasion of a family's privacy and right to grieve. Watching a family cry and pray has no bearing on the news event what so ever. Many people have been upset by this.
I certainly hope TV3 shows more compassion to families who have lost loved ones in the future.

I agree - and it really annoyed me how they kept referring to her as "murdered prostitute" - just 'cause she was a hooker doesn't mean they need to keep referring to her like that - she was still a person and deserves the same respect as any one else who gets murdered.

And good on you for writing the letter Dana. I think that the news channels are all competing with each other now to see who can get the most dramatic pictures and somebody needs to bring them back down to earth and show them how wrong they are. News is supposed to be factual reporting not drama - if we wanted to watch drama then we would watch movies or soaps not the news.
Like Lizzle I've given up watching the news now - I just stick to news websites because at least then I can scan the headlines to find out what's happening and if I want to know more I can read the entire article.

I have to agree with you on that one Emily. Yes Mallory Manning was a prostitute but she was also a daughter and a sister. Who cares if she worked in the sex industry. On some nights, the news almost seemed to put more emphasis on that than on the fact that she was murdered. Poor girl.
Anyone remember Stephanie Skidmore? She was another prostitute was murdered in 1996 (I think it was 1996). She was a friend of my sisters and the wouldn't stop calling her a hooker on TV aswell. My mum also ran a charitable trust called MASC (mothers and men against sex crimes). She had quite a bit to do with the Jane Furlong murder in regards to family support. Again, the news would only refer to her as a prostitute. Half the stuff that happened to that poor girl was never released by the police. So if people have to go through these hideous ordeals, then surely we can show them a little more respect.

I was disturbed by this too. Didnt they do the same to poor Kyahs family when they filmed her funeral? Im sure they made a big mistake there too...

Geez, I should be watching the news. Just found out one of the guys who died in the jetboating accident down south was a guy I went to school with. At one time I was quite good friends with his sister. he was only 34 and leave a 10 and an 8 year old. sad.

I hate how whenever they mention the fire in South Auckland where 4 kiddies died, that smoke detectors could have saved them - okay, maybe but I don't really think that the family needs to be hearing that constantly, it is not going to help that matter is it!

Yeah it isn't going to help the matter at all BUT it might get through to someone else and if that saves just one life....... you get the point. I do feel for the family though.

I thought the same thing about showing Sonnys family. Even if they did get permission the family were probably too upset to really think about it and probably still are to complain. Good on you for emailing them Dana I think I might too.
I think with Kyah they were allowed to film outside but they went in anyway and hid at the back filming. I'd say they know they shouldn't be doing it but the chance of the family complaining while in such grief isnt too high so they do it anyway. I've stopped watching the news too because of things like this Jack gets really upset about some things and I just don't think he needs to see these things.
