Subject: Where did my friends go?? (Rant)

With Isabelle's first birthday in less than three weeks .. I've realised (well Ive known for a while) that my friends have moved on.
I can understand (kind of) .. Im at a different stage in my life and Im a Mum now .. but Im still me! (And stealing from Charlys post "just a tired version of me)
Ive just got to the point where Ive given up trying
What makes it harder is .. DH moved from the UK to NZ so he doesn't have a circle of friends either and being a SAHD he doesn't tend to get invited to the Mummy coffee clicks.
I work fulltime so havent had time to make new Mummy friends (apart from you guys of course) .. so Im just feeling "alone" I suppose.
I suppose I just imagined Isabelle having lots of little friends to grow up and run around with and doing all the things I used to do .. like a grown up version of friends with kidlets
Anyway .. my rant for the year is over ..

I'm kinda the opposite all my friends have gone off and had babies, and I'm still working and waiting to TTC this year.
I tell ya I'm running out of friends in my age group who don't have children, and by the time we have our first, half my friends kids will be at school.
My best mate and I always thought we'd marry guys that were mates, and our children would all grow up together. So not happened that way.

I'm exactly the same and JJ's only 6 months. I still see my old friends occasionally but they don't even call, text or email like they used to. I'm the first of all my close friends to have a baby and the others are a couple of years away at least. I can feel them drifting away - my (former?) BF said something about not calling because she never knows when it will be a good time and she doesn't want to disturb us. Makes me realise how much of the effort I used to put in - I was always the group organiser and now I have things to occupy my time nothing gets organised (so I guess they're losing touch with each other as well!).
Luckily I have made some fantastic new mummy friends (mostly through OB!) and I hope I'll reconnect with my old friends when they have kids.

I hear ya! My BFF and I were planning on being pregnant together and everything ..
In her defense they had some issues conceiving so it didnt work out quite that way .. and at first I thought that way why she was distant.
But I just think she still enjoys doing what we used to do and at this point in time I cant do it with her.

I was very much like that when Michaela was younger.
Being a working mum makes it difficult to have mummy friends as they tend to catch up during the weekdays when I'm at work and their weekends are family time, and hard to keep up with childless friends as I want to spend my weekends with my little one rather than going to parties and talking about things that just don't seem important (or even all that funny anymore).
I found a balance by having workday lunches with my working friends every couple of weeks and I had a friend whose DH worked shifts so when he was on weekends we would catch up. It still left me with lonely weekends most of the time, especially after my mummy friend moved overseas.
A few months ago I ran into an old work friend who has a daughter 6 mths older than Michaela. They enrolled in Michaela's dance class too and now this friend and I catch up with another friend (who has 2 sons 5 & 7yo) after dance every Saturday, it's our mummy group.
Maybe you could take Issy to a class of some kind on a saturday morning and meet people at the same stage in life as you that way. Or else, the perfect solution is that you, Issy and SD move to Wellington and you can join my mummy group. Ha, problem solved!

I know what you're saying, we moved down here from Auckland and people from auckland do not like to travel past the bombays. So we are slowly losing touch with our friends.
I got a text from my friend the other day "when you're up here let me know" as if when we come up to auckland its easy to cart baby all over the place visiting people. And shes a teacher so shes on holiday and has no kids, she could easily make the trip to come visit.
We find it a bit lonely but are slowly making friends, I found that having a baby gives you a bit of an 'in". We have quite a good antenatal group as well

Lilfatty - i totally understand. I am the same. Both me and DH work full time but neither of us grew up in Auckland and so dont really have a circle of friends (i am from the UK also ).
I have made a few friends through my martial arts but they are a bit younger and single, so just make spur of the minute plans - i do get invited but its quite hard to do it.
Where abouts in Auckland are you?? Maybe, if you want, we could plan a saturday/sunday morning play date and coffee??

I'm the same lilfatty my friends still go to the pub all the time and used to ring and say come out worries abou the kids get a babysitter (they stopped ringing eventually) some people don't realise your lifes different. I'm slowly making friends with people that have kids but it's hard to meet them when you don't work....like other people have suggested join some groups and stuff (even tho I don't take my own advice)
You've got all of us on here though!!!

I think some of us Auckland Mums should make a regular weekend coffee group/get togethers. Even if it was fortnightly or monthly.
I am in a similar boat as although a lot of my friends have kids, they are either alot older than Sam or are too busy with their own lives!
I would just love a regular thing that Sam and I could go to

I think thats a brilliant idea .. I keep meaning to ask about having a fortnightly/monthly meetup .. it would be like having my very own coffee group.
And what I would about it being an OB one .. is that all the bubs are of varying ages .. so you would get to see what you have in store (if your bub is younger)

I am kind of the same. I am quiet a shy person, so that makes it even harder, Only one of my friends has children and the rest are only just started to get married and kids are still a couple of years off. Also doesn't help that my BF lives in Germany (married a german guy) and isn't planning on coming back to live in NZ until at least another 3-4 years, which sux.
Would definitely be keen in a regular Auckland meet up. Although, I am a bit of pain coz I don't drive over the harbour drive (it just freaks me out), so could only do any shore meet ups. It could be cool that all the bubs/toddlers are different ages- Ella is totally obsessed with babies at the moment (maybe she is trying to tell me something ) and would love to play with any babies.

I hear that! I'm only 23 so none of my friends would even consider babies right now Unfortunatly that means they don't come around half as much as they all said they would when I was preggers.
About 3 of us girls try to catch up every wed night for a couple of beers in town and a gossip but all I ever have to talk about is babies! I do enjoy listening to their single girl adventures though

That should make coffee group at your place interesting
Isnt there a chipmunks or something out your way .. or New Lynn?
Maybe we could meet up for coffee there (as its free for our bubs)
Off to have a check .. I cant quite remember what the place is called, but I was sure it was in New Lynn (which is half way for us both)?

On a side note .. if we organised something fortnightly then we could kind of move around the suburbs
Im ok with hosting at my place .. so maybe if we had a group of us around Akl we could take turns (or meet at parks) then we wouldnt be limited to only North Shore Mums or central Mums and those that couldnt travel could at least meet up at least once a month.

Man, im so lucky , my closest friends are the ones Ive been friends with forever, and one of them has a daughter who is 6 months younger than C , but the ones who don't have kids, still ring me all the time, visit me, invite me out ....the only difference is that I now have Caitlyn ,im still the same girl who chased after milk trucks and flashed my boobs at cars (which, horror of horror had my BROTHER in one time )
I have a few mum friends, and a few non mum friends and I get equal attention from both .....after reading this thread I think I should feel very grateful

We could do all of it. Vary it between parks, playland type things and peoples houses. I am happy to travel (we are in Whangaparaoa but only for another 6 weeks until our lease is up then I don't know where we will be ) and the weekends are a great idea so everyone can make it. My Dh won't care about it being the weekend. I'm sure he would like some quality time once a fortnight or so with his PS3
So who is keen to start this month???
Jillian how are you at driving west over the Greenhithe bridge? Also Sam & I could always pick you and Ella up on the way to anything over that way

count me in. I think I could get out West, as long as I don't have to drink of the north western motorway (I really need to get over my fear of the motorway). Otherwise a ride over would be good
this month would be ok, apart from I have 2 weddings to go on the last 2 sats on the month....otherwise we are free. DH would be cool, as I try and give him an afternoon off in the weekend to do 'guys stuff'.

My DH would probably want to come but at least if anyone elses partners wanted to come then they wouldnt feel so isolated
Oh and my DH is used to being the only man surrounded by babies especially since he is the SAHD and takes Issy to her baby things.
However if you want to make it a girl only thing .. I will just let him know (or maybe we could make some things girls only)
Im fine with starting this month .... the weekend of the 24th is a long weekend .. so maybe the 17th and the 31st?
Or we could do the 10th and the 24th .. but you would all have to eat cake on the 24th in honour of Isabelle turning one! (But her birthday bbq isnt till Monday .. so we could do the Saturday if it suits everyone)

Argh..was going to do a long post but couldn't word it right (I sounded like a bi*ch...maybe I am???)
Anyhow, it's no easier from the other side of the fence. As a childless person I struggle with how hard it can be to spend time with my friends who have kids.
Chin up, the ones that are worth keeping will make the effort. Eventually. (And that goes both ways too.)

I hear you J. When Cooper was born we had a huge falling out with our closest friends and no longer talk or see quite a few of them. As a result we call ourselves "No Mates Bannos" Quite often I sit at home by myself with Cooper and have no where to go or no one to see or call.
It was sad on his 1st birthday as we had no little people to invite, it was just us and the grandparents and that kind of made me feel a little bummed for Cooper.
I tend to spend alot of time on my laptop talking to you guys on here or PM's/MSN.
I'm lucky enough to have met quite a few people on here, who I class as friends, but they work and when we do want to get together I usually have something on or can't get there.
I would be more than happy to have you guys over here we've got a good sized out door area and it would be nice to have people over.

Point taken surfergirl. I go to a church where everyone is married and popping sprogs, and I found it so hard when we started going as we didn't have kids.
Definitely keen on an Akld meetup - I'm in New Lynn and have car so will travel. Lilfatty, I'm sure my DH would come if another bloke was there, so let me know if SD is coming. Once you're on mat leave, you should join the July 08 meetups sometime - quite a few westy mums and we're pretty harmless!.

Thats EXACTLY how I feel! My BFF has seen Isabelle once (when she was about six weeks old) and Ive got friends who havent seen her (or me) at all.
We (SD, Issy and I) could probably name ourselves the No Friends Fatty Clan
Ive finally decided that enough is enough .. and hence the pity post asking how I make friends in my vast old age

At school I was friends with guys and had only one girl friend who now lives in Perth.
A couple of years on I don't see the guys anymore, I have never been a smoker or drinker and thats what they are still into, so now I hang out with DH and my sisters (12 & 3).
I would be keen for a meetup every now and then, if you will have me.. (Ashlyn is only 7 weeks)

Her mother turned around and asked me what I've been teaching him lol - I said as long as he doesn't start lifting his leg or doing any funny business, I'm OK with it . Soooo cute though. Has a thing for the ladies

I know what you mean about no friends. I saw my coffee group out without me yesterday and I actually felt really hurt. I have NO friends here now. Oh well they're the ones missing out!

looks like we are getting quite a list together
any one got any ideas of where to meet up?
Thought we could start a list of possible places in each of the different areas and then just rotate around the areas.
North Shore
Milford Beach- huge grassy area with playground
Mairangi Bay playground- lots of grass, trees and fully fenced (also a bike path for any older kids)
Winsor cafe Mairangi Bag (featured in latest OB mag)
Long Bay
Chipmunks Albany
feel free to add to list
also- should we be moving this over to the Meet Up section? so thinking in terms of future meet ups....

I'm in East Aucks

I'm not sure if DH would come either, but would be great to meet some more OB Mums. (We have a lovely bunch of July 08 mums that meet up fairly often).
I'm in good old Henderson - from the sounds of it, probably not far from you at all Julia.

Add your name to the list if you want to join in .. and add any venues you think might be suitable on the venue list.
The idea is to alternate between areas so that everyone gets a chance to go somewhere close to home.
We would like to meet up regularly (probably fortnightly, maybe weekly if we miss each other too much) .. so the more ideas the better.

Pulling from a hat sounds more interesting!
And we should add Botany to the non-existant East list, since lilfatty knows how to get there now!
I like the idea of something regular - we used to have a standing date for a Sunday BBQ or roast with some friends who are about to move overseas . If anyone wants to be our standing date, you're welcome

Pulling venues out of a hat sounds good, but I reckon we should make sure that the venues are proportional to the people - eg so far there are lots of north shore places but not so many westie places despite a fair few westies!

Ooooh, count me in! I live in Manurewa (as the bit in my profile over there <--- says lol) and I dont mind what time so long as I can be back in Otahuhu by 3.30pm for a friends wedding lol!
Oh and I can bring the mandatory cheesecake I make a nice plain with no eggs one, and sprinkle flake over top... yummmmy! (Trust me, I have tried lots of cheesecakes, my mums recipe is the best so far, Crofters comes a very close second when I cant be assed making my own lol)

and just thinking out loud... since theres a few of us from all over, why not make it central so some of us arent travelling ages to get there, the majority of us will only have to travel a little bit to get to central, as opposed to Southies going North, or vice versa...

Ok I would add babykatz to the list .. but I dont know exactly where to put her on Weegees updated list by area, so could someone do that for me.
Kabe's right setting a time will be the hard part (especially with all the different aged bubbas and sleep routines)
What about lunchtime? I mean all kids have lunch
