I had tons of trouble with breast feeding - mastitis, thrush and half a nipple gone! After being in complete despair because of the pain, I started expressing at 4/5 weeks and bottle feeding. She took to the bottle no trouble at all and guzzled back a healthy 100-120mls a feed. Actually, she has some quite painful reflux and has been on zantac for the past 2 weeks - although we are starting to regulate her feeding to help her with this and ease off the drugs. Now bubba is 9 weeks, my breasts have cleared up and I want to get back to breastfeeding. We have tried a couple of times and we both need more practice - theres a lot of snuffling and slipping off. But I still think her latch is pretty good. Also, she seems to prefer the breast. That's the problem. Just these first few attempts and she is grizzling at the bottle...

I'm worried that if I don't go about this the right way I could end up with a big problem. She's not effective enough on the breast yet to fill up, but she might start to refuse the bottle.

Should i just plunge in and start breastfeeding her fulltime, hoping that we'll both get back to it with practice?

Or should I just supplement one feed a day and gradually increase this?

FYI- I live in Singapore - where the support is all expensive. I've had lactation consultancy and Im reasonably confident with our latch now...but my breasts were just too messed up to keep going.

Any advice for how to approach this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there wigwamforagoose, I don't have any great advice for you sorry but just wanted to say HI because I am also based in Singapore.

Have you been along to the Baby Cafe at Mother & Child? I haven't yet but one of my friends mentioned it as a good place to go for support with BF. I'm thinking about going along next Monday or the one after

That's awesome that you want to reestablish breastfeeding .

One thing we tried was using the http://www.medela.co.uk/UK/breastfeeding/products/nursing.php - Medela Supplemental Nursing System (basically a bottle that hangs around your neck full of EBM or formula, with a tube that you tape to your nipple, and bubs then BF like normal but drinks milk from both breast and bottle at the same time IYGWIM). However, the reason we used it was because my milk never really came in and was using it to try to increase my supply as well as teach DS how to BF. So not sure if it would be useful for you, but you can read more about it and other alternatives to the bottle http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/T026000.asp - here .

Good luck!

Good luck hun, maybe you should take it slow and see how it goes, you can always increase the feeds rather than it all going 'tits up' excuse the pun, haha!
