Is it mean to get your child things they need for school for their birthday?

Janaya got a lot of presents for xmas, she has so many toys, and she could really do with a new bag and pencil case, as well as a lunchbox. I thought we could get her them for her birthday. DH thinks its mean, and that those are the sorts of things we should be getting regardless of whether its he Birthday, and thinks its cheeky. Same issue with clothing, except shes now at the age where she is appreciating clothes.
My mum agrees.

I can see where hes coming from, I mean, if her birthday was in september then we'd be buying her a school bag this month anyway. My friend said that as a kid she loved getting things like a new bag. Shes doing the same with her daughter for her birthday.

What do you think?

Edited because I cant spell

Well for Sienna's birthday which isn't till April she has got a My Little Pony bag as she loves My little pony and I figure she needs a bag for daycare and it means that there is one less toy in the house.

So i say go for it

I suppose it depends on what sort of stuff you're planning on getting.  If you intend to get her the plain school standard items then I'd just buy them as seperate from her birthday stuff (or at least by some extra birthday presents too) but if you're getting her the latest Hannah Montana (or whatever she's into) trademarked items then it's definitely good for a birthday gift.

Yeah I agree with Jo, if its just plain standard stuff I'd get them seperate but if it was like the my lil pony stuff etc then I'd get it as a pressy with maybe a little surprise inside for her or something

I'm gettin Jake heaps of school stuff for his birthday! We are buying it next week and putting it away for October. Grandad is geting his backpack though so he can pay October prices
His fifth birthday present is a two wheeler big bike. (family tradition) though not sure if we are buying it or Nana. If nana gets the bike, we will get him a desk (exciting times!)

No its not mean.

My birthday is in June, and my mother was forever buying me winter clothes for birthday and summer ones for Christmas. In the end the budget didn't stretch to buying things for different occasions.

I love new bags and stationery too, I'd think they were a nice pressy.

Lol, i've got experiance with this as my birthday is a few days before xmas - I always got things i needed as well as "nice" stuff. The best presents were always the things that I could use all year - if it was something simple like a bag for school then my family would put another small treat inside (a small doll or lollies or costumes for my barbie). It makes opening your present more exciting!

My birthday is at the end of January so I used to get school bags and pencil cases and stuff for my birthday too - and I didn't think it was mean at all. My brother's birthday was in November and he'd get bags too so I didn't mind - but if he'd gotten a birthday present AND a new school bag I might have been a tad upset!

I agree with the others, if you are just going for plain I would do them seperate, but if she likes something special you could do that and stick some extra stuff inside DS needed a new school bag and lunchbox so he got a transformers school bag and a ben 10 lunchbox for christmas!

I think she'd probably love that kind of stuff as a present anyway but you could always get her a colourful book or chapstick or something pretty (but inexpensive) as well as the school stuff.

I don't think it's mean at all...besides, what's the point in spending money and cluttering up your house with toys that aren't needed when you can buy something useful. As others have said, just make the bag etc something special instead of plain.

I agree with Jo and Stacey and everyone else who agrees with them lol.

As a kid I LOVED anything to do with my little pony or rainbow bright, so if mum got me a rainbow bright pencil case or anything like that I was very excited! Cos I got to use it all the time!

I don't think it's mean at all if the school stuff is fun.

I'm getting a nappy bag for my birthday and I'm excited, of course I've probably been conditioned to be excited, I always got socks for Christmas LOL
