As it has been crazy hot here in Chch lately we have been looking at ways to cool the dogs down (esp during the day when we are at work) and I thought I would pass this hint on to you all...

The best thing we have found is filling a 2L ice-cream container with water, dropping in a small bone/bit of meat etc and then freezing it overnight. The next day we give our dogs a meat iceblock. They LOVE it and I'm sure it helps keep them cool. Also very funny to see their reaction the first time...

Hope this helps someone!

haha what a great idea! i must try that

i've been hosing the boys off a few times a day and they have one of those seashell pools to play in too

oscar is a real water rat so i don't need to worry about him so much, but clyde doesn't bother with the pool so i have to hose him. they are both golden retrievers and clyde's coat is really thick, i really feel sorry for him in this heat!

I bought a paddling pool for our lab yesterday. She loves it

Our German Shepherd is a rescue and petrified of the hose so I can't use it. She hides when ever I fill the paddling pool too so I just let her hang out in her bed with the fan going. We don't walk her till after dark now so that's helping.

A lady at our pet store told me a trick she uses too. She freezes old tiles and puts them in the area the dogs sleep during the day, everyday she just rotates the tiles. Aparantly they stay pretty cold for the whole day. I haven't had a chance to try it as yet
