Ava isnt quite ready yet for solids but i have some questions in preparation for it LOL.
Do you offer solids first then milk or visa versa? At what age does this change (if at all). How many milk feeds should they be having per day when they go onto solids? What is/was your routine for your baby when they first went onto solids? Thanks! |

And when they say 1 cubes worth, can you litterally freeze mushed pear into ice cube trays then warm and serve when needed or are there special trays you need to buy. -------------

to begin with offer a full milk feed then a bit of solids at 1 feed then increase to 2 feeds etc.
your plunket nurse should tell you these things at your 5month check. i think its like 7 or 8 months when you do solid then milk, i dont really know as we are only begining. bubs should still be having normal amount of milk feeds your just giving solids as well as they'll will be needing more than just milk. 8 months you can offer solids before milk.
The amount of Milk feeds should stay the same, at first they are just getting used to it so its often only a few teaspoons. I went by Maddi's appetite on when to increase and she was bf, she would drink what she needed. Didn't really change the routine too much (well for Maddi it created a desperately needed routine) we usually fed her after her second sleep which was about 2:30. We tried to make sure she wasn't too tired and it seemed to work well. -------------

I used to wait about 40 minutes. Any sooner and she just wasnt hungry enough. Never really knew exactly what I was doing but it seemed to work. -------------

Were you given one of those Watties "Guide to baby feeding" charts from Plunket? We stuck ours on the fridge for easy reference. You can also buy a neat little book by Alison and Simon Holst called "Baby food and beyond". If you're worried about allergies you should offer new foods in the morning - that way you have all day to notice a reaction and do something about it if necessary. We used to wait for about 40 mins after his bottle before offering solids as he couldn't fit anything else in immediately lol. |

There is alternative to the traditional puree route if you're interested - baby-led weaning. There's a brief idea of it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby-led_weaning - here and google will point you to some good sites if you want to learn more.

Thanks Denise for asking this question! We are starting Jackson on solids next week - bang on 4 months!
I wish we were starting later, but we really need to get some more calories into him. My GP said to always give the milk feed and then wait about half an hour. He said to start with just 1 - 2 teaspoons of farex (with pears if necessary) and go from there. It can be increased, but we have to watch that Jackson doesn't start taking less milk IYKNWIM. We are going to give him solids after his morning feed, as that is the biggest gap between that and when he seems to want his next feed (7am and then 11am). All the rest are 3 hourly. That's my 2c worth! |

I give the food pretty much straight after the milk feed with no problems, but it depends on the individual baby. Daniel now quivers with excitement when he sees the food coming! Plunket said that at about 8 months is when you switch to food first, and that the size of a meal then is about 4xthe size of the baby's fist.
When we started solids, I gave him 1-2 icecubes full of food (started with pureed vege) at lunchtime. After a week I added in some at dinner time. One week later added in baby rice at breakfast (and I recommend mixing this with fruit to help the body absorb iron - less constipation too). I am now guided by his appetite (we're on about week 5 of solids). Breakfast (after 1st feed) is 2tsp fruit+1 very heaped T baby rice+3T water Lunch (after 2nd feed) is 4-5 icecubes of fruit, or 1 mashed banana + 2 icecubes of fruit Dinner (after 4th feed) is 3-4 icecubes of vege + 1 icecube meat. Daniel is refluxy so I always do the fruit at lunchtime. I found that when I did them at dinner, he got quite a bit of tummy pain in the evening. When I introduce new flavours, I mix it with stuff he already likes and gradually reduce the 'old' food. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

I started solids after bf - basically the baby would feed until my breasts felt empty, but they still seemed quite hungry. So then I'd give them something to hold (like a rusk, cracker, wafer biscuit) or a spoonful of baby mush. As they get older you give food before feed. -------------  |

We had to start at 4 mths with both children so we gave them solids about 40 mins after milk feed in the am of cereal and pears which she loves and are now giving the same thing for dinner about an hour and 1/2 before last feed in the pm and she still drinks it all.
