Yeah I remember hearing that story a while ago......and it still grosses me out Question is - so after all that has the baby and the puppy grown up together and become best friends now?!?! Did the puppy grow to become the kid's personal body guard? Does it speak human?!?!  -------------

There was an update on that story IIRC. The puppy got taken away from her by the SPCA and she got some medical counselling. -------------

Puppy breastfeeder loses child 20 November 2004 By KAREN HODGE The three-month-old baby of a Hawke's Bay woman who was breastfeeding a puppy is understood to have been removed from her care. A spokesperson for Child Youth and Family Services confirmed yesterday that they were dealing with the family of Kura Tumanako – the Hastings mother who shocked Hawke's Bay residents with claims that she was breastfeeding her puppy. The spokesperson could not release any more information about Ms Tumanako's situation, saying confidentiality issues prevented it. The service becomes involved in suspected child abuse cases if they are notified and believe a child is at risk. The Dominion Post understands Ms Tumanako has been in the Hawke's Bay mental health unit this week. Staff from the Hastings Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have visited two Staffordshire bull terrier puppies owned by the pregnant Ms Tumanako. Hastings SPCA chairman Janet Mitchell said yesterday that staff had gone to a home where the two puppies were being cared for in the last couple of days after getting a call to check on them. The puppies, which were six or seven weeks old, needed to have vaccinations but were otherwise fine. "We are satisfied with their condition and care at the moment," Ms Mitchell said. There was no indication yet that the SPCA would be asked to find new homes for them. Ms Tumanako revealed this week that she was breastfeeding a puppy twice a day and wanted the dog to grow up to protect her baby daughter. Her baby had stopped being breastfed and Ms Tumanako did not want her milk to go to waste. Dog behaviour experts feared the dog could end up aggressive or with behavioural problems from being breastfed. ETA and at the time of that article she was two months pregnant (yup, with a 3 month old baby) -------------

well what can you say, I wonder about the baby on the way or more after that one.

Some breeds of dogs are known to be particularly aggressive, but I have to say - not that I like them particularly - Staffy's get a bad rap. They look mean so mean people buy them, and they are often trained to be mean. However they are known for being loyal and protective, and they are highly 'trainable' - actually apparently one of the best breeds to have with children, as long as they have been socialised correctly. If they're mistreated then they end up aggressive (like neighbours of ours when we lived in South Auckland whose Staffy would take your hand off if you let it, in fact their son lost half a finger to it, but he threw a brick at it so what did they expect?). Or in this case, the dog behaviour experts were worried about the dog getting funny ideas about its place in the "pack" - you need to train dogs so they know they're at the bottom of the hierarchy, but a breastfed puppy might think it's further up the hierarchy and, for example, give members of the pack they think are below them a nip to keep them in line. Sorry for the rant but in this country so many people blame the dog when it's the fault of the owner. I was so pleased to see a case recently where a council refused to put a dog down that had bitten a 3 year old kid, because the kid had provoked it (by poking its eyes and pulling its testicles, and the kid had a history of other instances of "animal cruelty") - parents should teach their kids how to treat animals with respect, or keep them away from them. Rant over -------------

I agree, its how u bring them up, & no one should provoke them any way. But all animals are wild & can cause harm so most of us know what is right & wrong.
With saying that there are some horriable attacks on people (by dogs) who do nothing to cause it. |
