my car broke down on me yesterday. i was on my way from hokitika to nelson and about 40 minutes before murchison i suddenly had no 4th gear, 30 minutes later i had no 3rd gear and 5th was sounding funny, then 5th packed it in as well and i spent a very scary 10 minutes or so driving while having to hold 5th gear in place so it wouldn't pop out, all the while praying we'd make it to murchison.
we finally made it with 2 sweating kids (did i mention there was no air conditioning??), maia screaming her lungs out and i had to get me dad to drive from nelson and tow me all the way there. i have now found out that it needs a whole new gearbox (well duh!) but unfortuanately we will apparently be very lucky to find one to fit the model of our car so we have to buy a whole new car. can we afford it? no! grrrrrrrr ------------- |

What make model year? DP deals in car parts and works for a guy in nelson from time to time who wreaks out cars so might have just what you need - or a cheap car........ -------------

How long are you in nelson for? DP cant reach the guy he works for up there until monday but he is pretty sure the gearbox should be the same as in another car and there should be heaps around nelson he thinks. Would prolly cost about $500 to buy a 2nd hand gearbox and get it fitted if its the one he thinks it is. -------------

As for replacement cars he thinks there are a few at the workshop but wont really know until monday but thinks if you mazda is otherwise in good condition it would be cheaper to repair it for now -------------

that's strange, we went around all the wreckers in nelson and none of them have a gearbox to fit it. they all said it was awkward coz the 121 doesn't fit other mazda gearboxes and it's also a weak spot in that model car so there aren't many around.
i'm in nelson until wednesday. ------------- |

DP could be wrong and thinking of a different year he will have a better idea monday so ill update ya then. If he is hopefully there is a cheapie sitting at the workshop that suits you to trade on. Just post if you get it sorted before then otherwise hopefully we can find something for you  -------------
