My daughter does this with any toy that she can reach, anywhere - even in the lounge during awake time - she just likes the feel of them against her cheek. So the 1 toy I have in her cot is a very firm soft toy (hard in the middle as it lights up and plays music) so there is no worry about her being able to suffocate, the worst she can do is fall asleep with it on her and when she moves it falls off. As long as the toy isnt soft enough to cover and seal around or fill up your son's mouth it should be fine!!

Caden does this aswel sometimesl, but they are at that age where they can move if they cant breathe. Maybe he likes it over his face? lol. Caden tends to lay his head on his cuddly blanket thingy, it has a teddy head on it(from babycity and its lime green).
Like flutterby said, as long as its not going to get in his mouth or up his nose he should be just fine.

Ollie loves having a little muslin cloth other his face when he sleeps. Sometimes I check on him and it's just over his mouth, occassionally over his whole face. We have only just started letting him keep it over night rather than just using it to fall asleep with - for the same reason. We have been worried it will at least reduce the airflow around his face even though it should be light enough to breathe through.

Brenna has always liked to sleep with her blanky over her face. She still does it now (2yr 3mth). She even tells me she likes it "round here and here and here" *insert wild arm actions moving around her head*
I never worried about it suffocating her. She was happy and I'd check on her

Emily also loves to do this with her soft toys. She's been doing it since about 7 months and she's 11 months now. I've never been too concerned about it, they don't really seal around the airways. Emily grabs a teddy as soon as she's put into her cot and rubs it on her face - I think it's a comfort thing and she loves the feel of it on her cheeks.

Dominic does this with his teddy. he likes it either right over his face or on top of his head. I was worried it meant that he was developing a smell association with his teddy and I'd never be able to wash it.

My girls have these little cuddly silk and cotton blankies and they always sleep with them over their faces. At first it freaked me out and I would wait till they were asleep then take them off but they would wake up and freak out! So now I just leave them. They've been doing it for 4 months now so I'm no longer worried

Cian does this too - but to go one step further I often catch him asleep with either his taggy blanket or the paw of his (small) teddy in his mouth!! he just loves sucking on things at the moment... problem is he quite often wakes up when I try and pull it out of his mouth!
