My son is 6 months old- I want to change his surname from his father's name to mine. As daddy turned out to be a plonker! Has anybody managed to do this? I can't seem to find any good advice on the matter.

Click on http://www.bdm.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Changing-a-Name?Opendocument - this link and scroll down to "changing the name of a child under 18". Plonker may need to sign the application.

Pretty sure if said 'plonker' is on the birth cert then yup you have to get plonkers permission.
I wanted to to my dd as she had her fathers surname but knew he wouldn't agree and so I have hypinated it with my dh surname and she just uses that just legally it still her fathers. (hope that made sense)

If 'plonker' won't sign the form then you can always just use your name. My mum did that with me and my sister as my plonker father was in Australia and very uncooperative. The only thing is its a bit confusing and annoying because you have to use your legal name on anything official. Hypinating is probably the best option.
