This is our first cycle TTC #2 and I want to take a decent pre-conception vit, but I don't want to take Elevit as budget just won't allow.
What are you taking?
What's so good about it?
Where do you buy it?
How much (for how many tablets)?

I don't take an Elevit type thing. I take folic acid which I get from my doctor - it's $3 for 3 months supply (I usually claim the doctor's visit back on health insurance because I usually get the prescription when I'm there for something else).
I also take a general multi-vitamin called Clinician's which is $51 for 2 months supply. I also take EPO, Magnesium, Calcium, Spirulina and Flaxseed oil but that's mostly for my endo.

I took Apo Folic until I got pregnant and then switched to Elevit just for the other vitamins I needed. But this time around I probably wouldn't bother switching and would just stay on Apo Folic unless tests indicated I had to get more vitamins.

I'm taking the folic acid prescribed by the doctor - $3 for 3 months. I got the prescription when I was there for something else anyway. Not sure what I'll do if I've not had to go back to the doc before this one runs out. I think some docs will prescribe it without an appointment?

I got the standard folic acid $3 for 3 months from the GP too, got it when I last renewed my bcp script, will probably use this lot up before being 3 months pregnant. Will go get some more then. Not taking anything else.

I'm taking the $3 folic acid (from the doc) and Blackmores Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Gold. I got it from the supermarket on special for about $12 I think and it has 45 capsules so 1& 1 /2 months supply
Good luck Toni, I hope you get a BFP really soon

Milo I'm taking herbs too, fish oil and folic acid from the GP.
What herbs are you on? or is it Traditional Chinese Medicine?
I'm on Shatvani, chastetree, false unicorn, paeonia and ladies mantle. Apparently that is good for endo and stabilising my estrogen and progesterone.

I am taking elevit, but I keep forgetting! It has a bit more than just the standard folic acid and I know its expensive but having worked with children with spina bifida I think it is worth it.

Hey Em, I'm taking elevit as well and started in when I came of BCP which was end of Oct so have almost finished it. I was considering getting another suppliment that was a lot cheaper. I've been doing a detox diet on my second day so havnt been taking it as I guess my system will be doing a big clean out so waste of pills. They say to take it 3 months before TTC, in a perfect world we would get pregnant alot sooner so not really sure what I will do once I finish Elevit??

My doctor told me that the normal womens multivitamins have too much vitamin A in them so no good if you get pregnant...guess not an issue while trying to conceive but could be when actually pregnant.

Apo-Folic has the same amount of folic acid as Elevit

I was taking the thompson's pregnacare & blackmores folic acid to top up to 800mg. But after speaking to a friend who is a GP he recommended switching to elivit as its been thoroughly tested, produced under tight controls and contains exactly the right amount of everything. Goodness I sound like an ad.
Firm believer in folic acid! but part of me thinks multivits are just a way of getting expense pee, and its not like my diet completely useless. But then I guess its better to be safe than sorry and have everything topped up.

Yeah its sooo hard to know, I don't really understand enough about vitamins ie how long they stay in your system etc. I'm eating heaps of fresh veges and fruits. Then theres also lots of woman who find out they are preg before they start having folic acid, still like you say eliminate what risks you can.

Have any of you ladies had blood tests to find out what you may be low in. I am considering asking for this later in the year i think they are called pre natal but i'm not sure.
Those of you on elevit how do you find taking it i hear the pills are quite large, i'm no good at taking pills (swallowing them) half the reason why i was never on bcp is it really worth it or is it ok to just take folic acid.

Hi Sweetpea, IMO i think just taking folic acid is fine. As long as you are eating well your body shouldn't need a top up in the way of a supplement anyway. Elevit is really expensive as well! More something that I will take when I am pregnant rather than prior.

i have been told not to take a general multivitamin as it has extras in it that arent good for the baby. thats why there are special mulitivitamins for pregnancy only. i take Thomsons pregna-care and also the folic acid. am also on Evening primrose oil as this really helps with later on in the pregnancy...now all i have to do is finally get pregnant!

Hi Sweetpea. I'm taking Elevit. They are pretty large tablets, I haven't had any problems taking them, but I am able to take most pills. Perhaps try taking them with yoghurt (I heard it is great to help lubricate your throat)

I recommend pregnavit (white container, with green on it) ....not too expensive that it breaks the bank account and can be taken whilst TTC, during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding. I'd tell you what is in it, except I can't because I no longer have a container.

Elevit is the only pregnancy multi on the market that has 800 all the rest have between 250 and 400. The folic acid from the doctore is 800.
Elevit is good for when pregnant will switch to it then but in the mean time find taking my herbs, folic acid and fish oil and zinc works well for me.
i did but micogenics pregnancy multi but only has 250 of folic!! hopeless would have to take 2 a day to make 500 and don't know if you are suppose to.!!
unsure of what the wild yam is for? will ask naturolapath next visit.
It tastes foul but close my eyes and hope for the best!

Hi Sweetpea - I'm useless at taking pills as well, but I have been trying very hard this year and I can now take the elivit (with a mouthful of food that is) I'd recommend having some mashed potato with a bit of butter in it (makes things slip down easier), cut the pills into what ever size you need to start with and just take them with mouthfuls of food. The food acts like a buffer so you don't feel the pill at all.

Sweetpea, I'd have to agree with littlestar. I too am totally useless at taking pills and I was shocked to see how huge the Elevit tablets were!
Originally I tried crushing them and putting the crumbs on a cruskit with marmite to eat, but gave up on that idea when the pill starting jumping around the kitchen while trying to crush it. I ended up losing most of it before it made it's way onto my cruskit!
So, the best way was to break it in half, and when eating my dinner I take a mouthful of food, chew it and just before I swallow put half a tablet in the middle of my chewed food. I don't even taste or feel it go down - fanastic!
Hope that helps

I was nosey and did a Google (hope you don't mind ) and it's for PMS and cycle irregularity, also as an alternative to HRT! I think we're far too young to worry about that tho

My Folic Acid from the doctor is 5mg and the pills are really tiny - about the same size or a bit smaller than BCP. So if you're worried about pill size and you eat a fairly well balanced diet I'd say you can just take the folic acid. I also have a multivitamin that is in powder form so you just mix it with water or juice and drink it.

I have been taking Elevit for a few months but prior to becoming pregnant, I took a regular pregnancy vitamin from the health store, and then an additional folic acid supplement to top up since the vitamin only had 300 folic acid.
