Hi all,
A friend of mine has given me some places on where to get maternity wear from. Just wondering where you are getting your gear from? I have already been given quite a lot of stuff from my sister and brought an outfit from Pumpkin Patch over the weekend. Does anyone have recommendations for other places they go to?

I got a few things off trade me, often they have hardly been worn and can be really cheap

I got a few things of Trade Me and I also got a fair bit from Pumpkin Patch and JK outlets stores. I also got a couple of things from Mama Mia's a local store here on the shore.

Mrs Frantic: Mama Mia is awesome! The owner Tracey honestly is one of the most knowledge people I have spoken to. They have an excellent range of new clothes and also high quality pre-loved clothes for mum and bubs.

Ahhhh, a topic so close to my heart right now!
I've got a few from trade me - pays to go into the shops first and see what's out there and find out what size of their brand you are (like Egg just goes size 0, 1, 2.. etc), then if your size pops up on TM, you're in with a grin! Got a few lovely top bargains and a pair of pants I'll never fit (hmmm, I'm thinking I should've taken my own size advice on that one!).

K-Mart have some nice stuff and some not so nice stuff - but all nice prices so worth weeding through the yuk items to get those great black pants they've got!

I think Pumpkin Patch and Egg have the loveliest clothes, and will invest in a bit of PP stuff when I really need it later on, and doubt that I'll ever pay Egg prices new! JK stuff is good too. Wish we had outlet stores round here though.

i just wear my usual clothing. for pants, i've got a belly belt which is great and i usually wear a belly band over the top to cover up the undone zip and it also covers your belly if your tops are too short.
there are a few belly belts and belly bands on trademe at the mo

I'm going to be a dag as usual and not say ANYTHING helpful to this topic at all LOL I didn't get any of my maternity clothes in NZ, I was *really* lucky because I was able to get heaps more for the money we had budgeted, as I got them in Canada and also over the Xmas / New Years period when there were heaps of sales !

Oh Sh*t ! I lied, my bad ! I bought ONE thing here, from Mummy's Tummy in Ponsonby, but that was my wedding dress and mum paid for it They have absolutely beautiful clothes, but are definitely expensive (what else would you expect in Ponsonby though LOL)... mind you my wedding dress wasn't exactly a ball gown either

I was also doubly lucky that my MIL sent me a whole truckload of things to wear from a couple of maternity shops in the United States, and for variety I threw in some of my old Glassons stuff... my favorite items being the Breast Cancer tshirts.

I do covet some of the things they have at Egg though too, while on sale they can be OK price wise, but otherwise pretty much out of my range.

Anyway, told you I wouldn't be of much use ! Hehehe... so I guess I will just "second" what the other ladies have said or recommended

I saw a belly belt at Farmers so may go and get one of those too cause I have noticed that I can't do up the top dome on my jeans anymore and would still like to be able to wear them if I can.

If I had a thousand dollars I would go and splurge at PP altho I dont find their clothes very warm!! Like no nice cuddly jumpers or anything.
I got some really nice bits of TM - all brand new and the Mothercare range - very reasonbale.

Got cool black pants from SHANTONS from $19 - bargain!

Um Glassons have some great stuff except I need to get a 16 in the tops to allow for the bump!!! and the sleeves are soooooo long. Surely if you are a size 16...your arms are not any longer than anyone elses? I dont get it!

Have not been to Kmart or Warehouse but a friend got some nice stuff.

Also I think Farmers have a range for Maternity now too. I just have not looked properly!

I really dont like spending money on BIG clothes!

If you are looking for anything dressy try Mobea... a bit more expensive than most places and can only order form a catalogue, but out of every place I have bought from MOBEA has been my ultimate favourite. Their clothes are gorgeous, comfortable and wearable AFTER pregnancy!! Honestly, I got my favourite black pants from there... I adore them and live in them. They are the comfiest trousers I have and well worth the money!

Hi Millie
Are you in Wellington? (For some reason am thinking you are?) I was in Baby Star in the weekend in Newtown and they had some really nice things there. I also saw some tops in Kmarts maternity section which were quite cool and cheap.

Posted By: jax
Date Posted: 11 May 2006 at 9:48pm
I know some ladies have found their Belly Belts really useful BUT I will be honest with you, and for me personally it was really useless as not all of my tops are long enough to cover the crotch area (the fabric doesn't leave anything showing but the zip or buttons on your pants still has to be undone), it doesn't match with everything I've got, and the sizing didn't work very well for me either. I also didn't really want to go and buy two, as I wear both zip, clasp and button pants normally...

Sorry about the whinge, wish I'd tried the belly wrap thing first but can't really complain about my maternity wardrobe !

My best pair of pants were from JayJays, some yoga pants with a star on the bum. They tied up at the side and so were able to adjust to my belly as it grew, I practically lived in these!

I didn't wear any maternity clothes

I know what you mean about the belly belt, Jax, I got it before the belly popped out, thinking I'd cleverly extended my wardrobe for most of my pregnancy - I found it blimmin useless! I wonder if some of it's to do with how you expand - I think my hips might have widened as well, because my undies are tighter, and the person I got it from said that she wore one right through 'till her hips got too wide.
I can't go past those nice, stretchy pants that have the fold-down waist... you know, it can come right up to near your boobies later on if it has to! mmmm, attractive!!

yeah the belly belts on their own are pretty useless, who wants to have their undone zip exposed to all!
belly wraps are awesome as they can also suck in that side/hip fat

That's handy to know about the belly belts as I had thought about buying one but after reading a few people's comments I think I may not now and perhaps buy a belly wrap instead.

Yes I have a belly belt sitting in the drawer...totally useless as I have one pair of pants that have a button...the rest are clasps and fold over pants. I got given it so fortunately cost nothing.

I bought a Size 16 pair of Jeans from Max and much prefer them to Preggy ones and they do up fine and probably will do for ages yet....in fact they edge their way down all the time at the MO ....

What are these belly wraps and where do you get them..Are they on TM .....or can you buy them at the shops????

they are on trademe kelpa, but most of them aren't very wide and they don't go all the way from your zip to up to under your boobs. if you find one that's about 30cm wide, go for it.
the best one i had was from supre, it was $9.95 but that was 2 yrs ago and i was in there the other day looking to get another one and they are now $18.
still, i'm going to get one anyway as they are brilliant to hide open zips and they are a little tighter so they suck in the side fat

I got the major sulks on Fri when it was cold and wet and I had nooooo warm clothes that fit, so I went and spent $$$$$ which was fun! Went to JK and bought a super comfy pair of black pants which are stretchy but not trackpants so I don't feel like a dick wearing them, and a superwarm hoodie (which was $50 and the Warehouse have them for $20 but it IS superwarm)) and a couple of long sleeved t's and a gorgeous angora wrap cardy.
All this because I am currently about the same size I was at 6-7 mths gone with Maya, and my Patch maternity jeans I bought a few weeks ago that used to go over my bump now have to sit under it.
Will have to try and find a belly band to keep my belly warm! (and my poor exposed back!)
Also, JK have some great basic singlets for $20, they have a shelf bra in them for support and are super long so cover everything nicely. I bought 2 black and two white. I wear one of the black ones as togs with a pair of boardies too.

Might have to venture over to SUPRE!!! And pretend I am a size 6!!!!

Personally I have had some good use out of my belly belt (I'm wearing one right now!). It has helped keep me in my jeans and work pants for longer, but obviously you reach a point where it looks ugly to have your zip down hehe. It definitely depends on what sort of clothes you wear as to how useful they are.

Just last weekend I finally bought a proper pair of preggy jeans from Pumpkin Patch and they are totally comfortable, but had nothing elasticated to hold them up cause I have room to grow! I ended up buying some suspenders to do the job and they're great now :)

I went to Babystar for the first time on the weekend and they had some really cool maternity clothes. Lots of trousers with the elastic waists which is what I have been looking for but not cheap (around $100-$120 each). I may have a look on Trade Me to see if I can get a pair second hand or maybe I could just layby a pair at Babystar :)

Like others I abandoned my belly belt very quickly but the belly wrap thing sounds really good! Wish I had known about that. I spent a reasonable amount (ok waaaaaaay more than I ever meant to!) on maternity clothes but I suppose at least I live in them so I feel like I've justified it. *lol*

Emma - We must have got the same hoodie from JK maybe? Mine is a jacket one....so warm!

aww I want a JK hoodie now! LOL

A few months ago I went out and in a fit of "I'm too fat and don't fit anything" spent $$$$$ on proper maternity wear - mostly summer tops *rolls eyes at self*

I managed to buy a brand new JK brand jumper off trade me last week (was $60, I paid $20 )

and I agree with Jax re. the Belly Belt - I bought mine second hand off Trade Me. I found it useless as all of my pants are hipster style (so I re-sold it on Trade Me )

Millie, there is a really nice new maternity shop that has opened in Wellington. Its on featherston street just down from minnow. It is called either mothers secret or mummies secret. Most of the things are really reasonably priced and there are some quite cool things. I got some really nice boot leg cords that don't look at all maternity-ish. They sit under the bump and just stretch as you grow.
It is worth having a look in there.

Thanks Katie - I will go and check it out next time I am in Featherston Street. I went and brought two pairs of dressy pants from Baby Star and they were quite expensive but then again I should be able to wear them again after pregnancy. I may have a look at some tummy wraps too off Trade Me - would be great for winter :)
