I have just had my baby reg form returned as only I signed it.

From the 25th of January the new requirement is for both parents to sign, even though contrary to what is on the form.

If the other parent can't sign then you need proof of why.

Just a heads up incase you are wanting your reg to go through fast!

Wow that's going to suck for some people.  Lucky it wasn't the rules when my sis had her first child, I wonder how she would have proved that the baby's father is an irresponsible ass.

I assume that the Dad needs to sign it if you want his name on the cert. Will be a bit of a pain for those that have "irresponsible asses" to deal with especially if they want the name on there for child support

I presume if you are not living with the father (and/or don't know who or where he is) then you don't name him as the father and just the mother signs.

These are the circumstances:

Dead: supply the date if in NZ or death certificate (charming that they start off with this one!)

Missing: State in a signed letter what steps you have taken to contact the other parent.

Of Unsound mind: Provide evidence from a regd med dr.

Unable to sign the form by virtue of a med condition: Provide evidence from a regd med dr.

Requiring other parent to sign form would cause unwarranted distress to either of the parents: 1. Copy of Protection order against either parent or person residing with other parent
2. Letter from lawyer providing evidence of the unwarranted distress that may be caused to either parent.
3. Letter from reg'd med dr or police report or statutory declaration providing evidence of the unwarranted distress that may be caused to either parent.

I would presume that the hospitals will put in a note with the old forms. Dunno why mine couldn't go through. It was dated the 21st of Jan!

Oh & yes if there is no signature or the above stuff the father will be left blank.

Thats weird that yours didnt go through and mine did.  I wouldnt have had a date earlier than 21 Jan as I received the forms the day after James was born (ie 21 Jan). I may have dated it that day but I definately didnt post it till I got home.  Got itback the other day and both parents are on it.

That is going to make it really hard for some people who just dont want to see the father and think he is an incompentant arse but its not "officially" proven.

It could be to stop fathers getting away with not paying child support if they are not with the mother anymore.

I have known a few people who do that and they get more money from the govt, things may have changed since then though.

Morning

If you've gone and added the fathers details to the form then he will need to sign it, but if his details arent on the form then it should have gone thru....

Just going a little of topic now, but Internal Affairs can be abit odd.... When my DD2 was born I registered her name as Justice, I sent the forms and everything in and they were returned stating that, I could not use the name justice as it was an Official Title. They said that unless I have a real good reason as to wanting to name my child justice I would have to name her something else....Because I could'nt think of a real good reason ( Apart from just liking the name Justice) I named  her something else. About a month after this I met this lady and her son was named justice & he was 2 years old. I told her about my dilemma with naming my daughter and she said her forms went straight thru no prob's what so ever... It's annoying how it's ok for some and not for others.... Maybe the lady who received my form didnt get any the night before so she was sh*tty when she arrived at work and just took her frustrations out on me, LOL...

Hmmm have you got electronic copies of his tickets?

I needed Coopers birth cert fast as I have to apply for a passport & also arrange flights at a reasonable cost!

Hmm that's all very interesting, I haven't looked into registration much yet.
My predicament is that I'm single, I know who the father is of course, and he wants be be an active father in the baby's life etc which is all good, but we split up a few months back.
I want his name to be on the birth certificate because I think that will be good for the child, but at the same time I want the baby to have my last name.
What if he wants the baby to have his surname, or a double-banger surname? He might refuse to sign the registration if she only has my surname. Does anyone know about legal rights around this area?
Thanks

Your MW should give you one before you leave hospital. If not, call the BDM office http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.NSF/wpg_URL/Services-Births-Deaths-and-Marriages-Index?Opendocument - Births, Deaths & Marriages
