Michaela has a convertible booster seat with a harness which is to be used until 15-18kg and then after that the harness is removed and it's a normal booster with an adult seat belt.

I have no idea what she weighs although she was about 14kg several months ago so I expect she's now well within the range to move up but I feel happier with her in the harness however I noticed the other day as I strapped her in that her shoulders are now well above the place where the harness feeds into the seat which means that she's well and truly outgrown it.

I'd still feel happier with her in a harness so I was thinking I might go and buy one of the ones that you can get to use with an adult seat belt.  My questions are:

Where do I get a 'universal' booster harness from?

Will I need to get the booster bolted or will it still be secure when the sash belt is fed through the front rather than through the back of the seat?

I have a safensound one, I think it cost me about $50, and I got it from the baby factory.

Im pretty sure they need to be seated in the middle of the car and bolted (Dont quote me on that, I just remember having to get a bolt put in the middle of the car.

We've got a fantastic one from Baby Factory (thanks Steph) that has a weight restriction of 45kg, the straps are very adjustable and your child can be in there for as long as needed. Not sure of the brand - DH has the car..I'll see if I can find the linky.

I think all baby shops have 'em, at $50 to $70 apiece. Booster seats don't need to be bolted and are fine with the strap over the front of the child.

yep you can get the harnesses from most places that sell babygear.....incl warehouse, farmers etc

the only ones i've seen are safe n sound ones for $50-60 but i think repco also have them for about $40

I have no idea where she gets it from, I'm only 5ft and although DH isn't short he's not really tall either.  Apparently he was tall right through until highschool though and then he stopped growing and everyone else caught up

Think we got ours from Farmers but baby factory also has them, you can use the sash belt also but it just gets fed thru the lap part - need to make sure you dont have the 'slack' in the belt, you can also put a seat belt clip on it to make it more secure and the harness must be bolted in to be of any use (safe n sound one)

The only thing to watch out for is what your booster seat is made of. We had one of those convertible seats that you take the harness off and just use with the seat belt. We used it with one of those safe and sound harnesses which I found really good and then I found out because our car seat was plastic it could be quite dangerous. Apparently they might be ok but they haven't been tested with the harness - some of them are quite heavy (plastic vs polystyrene) and there is some concern that the child may get squashed between the seat and the harness (because the harness is bolted not the seat and therefore the seat can move forward!) But obviously they have been tested with the big seat belt and are ok so perhaps they will be ok with the harness.   Who knows? I know it freaked me out! Hope everyone can understand what I mean
